Who are these solutions for?

Only space for one appliance

You want one appliance to handle both washing and drying, and can adjust the amount of laundry you dry. Que Choisir Ensemble lists space-saving as one of the benefits of washer-dryers in small homes.

Frequent loads of laundry to dry

You need a drying capacity that suits your loads and could consider a dedicated appliance, possibly stacked if the appliances and stacking kit are compatible. Bosch Home Appliances France sets out the specifications for its stacking accessories by model number.

A small room to fit out

Before choosing where to put the appliance, check ventilation, temperature conditions and access to parts that need regular maintenance. Manufacturers’ general recommendations do not replace the instructions for the model you are considering.

What to check before you buy

Start with the main constraint that will determine your choice — the available space, the room or the amount of laundry — then compare the relevant features.

What matters What to check before buying Who prioritises it most
Making sure the appliance fits Compare the appliance’s height, width and depth with the space available. For a stacked set-up, check that the model numbers are compatible with the kit you have chosen. If space is tight, I also measure the depth and clearances before choosing between a combined appliance and a stacked set-up. Around 26% of consumers prioritise the space it takes up above all else.
Drying without an external vent Condenser tumble dryers do not need to vent air outside, according to the European Commission. Also check the room’s ventilation and the instructions in the manual. In a small room, I want to make sure the space meets the model’s ventilation and operating requirements. Around 26% of consumers base their choice primarily on whether the appliance suits the room.
Handling the amount of laundry For a washer-dryer, compare the washing and drying capacities separately. For a dedicated appliance, check the stated capacity and any limits that apply to specific programmes. If I do laundry frequently, I compare the drying capacity with the amount I want to dry without removing some of the load. Around 21% of consumers prioritise the amount of laundry to be dried.
Comparing running costs Compare labels and programmes on a like-for-like basis. For a washer-dryer, distinguish between washing-only and complete wash-and-dry cycles. To keep running costs under control, I look at the energy use for the cycles I actually run, not just washing. Around 16% of consumers put running costs at the heart of their choice.
Keeping maintenance within easy reach Check that you can access the filters and water container. Any drain connection or accessory must be compatible with the model. If I choose an alcove or stacked set-up, I want to be able to reach the filters and parts that need maintenance easily. Around 11% of consumers prioritise ease of maintenance.

Que Choisir Ensemble points out that a washer-dryer may have a lower drying capacity than its washing capacity, so the washing figure alone is not enough to assess a continuous wash-and-dry cycle. For a stacked set-up, the depth of more than 55 cm specified for the Bosch 17007417 kit applies to that particular kit, not to every installation.

A small room also calls for extra care: Bosch says that inadequate ventilation can extend drying times, while Electrolux’s general support guidance describes a risk of condensation in a room that is too small. Check the installation instructions for the model you choose rather than assuming it is suitable just because it does not need an external vent.

Since 1st July 2025, tumble dryer energy labels have used a scale from A to G, according to the European Commission. Older ratings, such as A+++, cannot be compared directly with the new ones. For washer-dryers, also distinguish between the figures for washing alone and those for a complete cycle.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing no external vent with no need for ventilation

A condenser tumble dryer does not need to vent air outside, but a small, poorly ventilated room can encourage condensation or extend drying times.

Check the ventilation and temperature requirements in the manual, as well as the clearances needed for installation.

  • Choosing a washer-dryer based only on its washing capacity

Its drying capacity may be lower. For example, the Electrolux EW7IW2856BG is rated for 8 kg of washing and 5 kg of drying, according to Electrolux France.

Size your load according to the capacity of the drying programme you plan to use.

If the load is too large, you may need to split it, which means running extra drying cycles.

  • Assuming a stacking kit will fit every appliance

Requirements vary depending on the kit and appliances. For example, Bosch specifies a washing machine depth of more than 55 cm for its 17007417 kit.

Check which model numbers are compatible with the kit and make sure you can access the parts that need maintenance once the appliances are installed.

  • Neglecting filter maintenance

Beko says that filters which are not cleaned regularly can reduce performance, increase energy consumption and lengthen drying times.

Choose a position that leaves the filters accessible and follow the maintenance instructions in your model’s manual.

Brands to consider for your set-up

Bosch

Available information includes heat pump tumble dryers and accessories for stacking or water drainage.

  • For the WQA23300FR, Bosch Home Appliances France lists an 8 kg capacity, dimensions of 842 × 598 × 613 mm and a sound power level of 62 dB(A) re 1 pW.
  • AutoDry is listed for this model, but it does not have a self-cleaning condenser. Check that stacking and drainage kits are compatible with the model numbers in question.

Electrolux

The SteamCare 700 EW7IW2856BG washer-dryer is an example of a solution that combines two functions in one space.

  • Electrolux France lists an 8 kg washing capacity and a 5 kg drying capacity for this model.
  • Its drying capacity means you cannot assume that every load you wash can be dried without removing some of the laundry. Also compare the energy figures for washing alone and for a complete cycle.

Beko

The UK range includes heat pump tumble dryers, along with advice on filter care.

  • Beko describes hot air reuse as a feature of heat pump technology and provides advice on cleaning filters.
  • This general description of the technology does not tell you how a specific model will perform. Check the specifications, noise level and features of the model you are considering.

Frequently asked questions

Does a tumble dryer without an external vent need a water drain?

Not necessarily: a condenser tumble dryer can collect the water in a tank or drain it away, according to the European Commission. Check that the hose or kit is compatible with your model. No external air vent does not mean there is no water to deal with.

Can I install a tumble dryer in a closed cupboard?

Don’t just check the dimensions: read the manual to see whether cupboard installation is allowed and what clearances are required. Bosch says that poor ventilation in a confined space can extend drying times, while Electrolux describes a risk of condensation in small rooms.

Which capacity should I look at on a washer-dryer?

Compare the washing and drying capacities separately, then size a continuous wash-and-dry load according to the drying capacity. The Electrolux EW7IW2856BG is rated for 8 kg of washing and 5 kg of drying, according to Electrolux France.

Can an old A+++ rating be compared with a current C rating?

Not directly: according to the European Commission, tumble dryers have used a new A to G scale since 1st July 2025. Compare labels from the same generation and the energy use of equivalent programmes. For a washer-dryer, distinguish between washing alone and a complete cycle.

How should I maintain a tumble dryer’s filters?

Follow the method in your model’s manual, as filters and care instructions can vary. Beko’s guide recommends cleaning both sides of the filters, drying them and wiping the filter housing before putting them back.
