Key selection criteria
Standard condenser dryer
Consider this: when you have no external vent and prefer cycles that are generally quicker than those of a heat-pump dryer.
Bear in mind: the water tank must be emptied if the model and installation do not allow direct condensate drainage.
Heat-pump condenser dryer
Consider this: for regular drying when reducing electricity consumption matters more than shortening each cycle.
Compare: consumption per cycle, the duration of the eco programme, noise level, capacity and condensation efficiency vary from one model to another.
Air-drying
Consider this: if the tumble dryer would be rarely used or there is no stable location with a power supply available.
Bear in mind: laundry must dry in a sufficiently well-ventilated room, ideally with mechanical ventilation extraction, to manage humidity more effectively.
Start by ruling out technologies that are incompatible with the room, then compare the practical constraints that will affect everyday use.
| Priority |
What to check |
Your needs |
| Suitability without an external vent |
Choose a condenser or heat-pump appliance. A vented model requires an opening or duct to the outside. Also compare the condensation efficiency stated for each model. |
I want to dry laundry without creating a duct to the outside. |
| Consumption and duration |
Compare weighted energy consumption per cycle, the duration of the eco programme, capacity and noise level. The European Commission’s EPREL database brings together this information for the tumble dryers covered. |
I want to limit electricity use without leaving my laundry in the dryer for too long. |
| Humidity and condensate |
Check whether water is collected in a tank, whether a hose is supplied and whether a drainage kit is compatible. For air-drying, use a large, well-ventilated room or one with mechanical ventilation extraction. |
I want to avoid adding humidity to a poorly ventilated room. ADEME states that air-drying laundry indoors is a highly moisture-emitting activity. |
| Space and stacking |
Measure the width, height, depth and access to the door. Check the clearances specified in the instructions, the wall socket, available water drainage and the models compatible with the stacking kit. |
My appliance must fit in the allocated space and remain stable above the washing machine, without impractical water management. |

Frequently asked questions
Can I install a vented tumble dryer in a flat without an external vent?
No, not in this setup: Que Choisir states that a vented tumble dryer requires an opening to the outside or access to a ventilation duct. Choose a condenser appliance, either a standard model or a heat-pump model.
Does a heat-pump dryer require a connection to a water drain?
No. A condenser tumble dryer can collect water in a tank. Some models also accept a hose or drainage kit, but this depends on the model, the position of the tank and kit compatibility. Consult the instructions for the model you choose.
Can I place the tumble dryer directly on top of my washing machine?
Do not do this without a purpose-designed system. A compatible stacking kit secures the appliances and helps prevent them from moving or falling. Check the model references and required depth. Bosch states, for example, that its 00717524 kit is designed for appliances with a depth of more than 55 cm.
If I am renting, can I create an air outlet in the façade?
Do not assume that you can. ANIL states that tenants must not modify rented premises or equipment without the landlord’s written consent. When work affects the building’s structure or communal areas, authorisation from the general meeting is required. Check your situation with the landlord and, if necessary, the building manager before drilling.
When is air-drying preferable to using a tumble dryer?
Air-drying may be suitable if the tumble dryer would rarely be used or cannot be installed correctly. However, dry laundry in a large, well-ventilated room or one fitted with a mechanical ventilation extraction outlet: ADEME highlights the importance of this precaution because of the moisture produced indoors.
