Which households is it for?

Households without suitable outdoor space

You regularly dry damp laundry in living areas because you do not have a balcony, garden or sufficiently well-ventilated drying room. A tumble dryer can reduce this practice, but it does not replace ventilation in your home. ADEME highlights that air-drying laundry is a significant source of indoor humidity.

People living in flats without an external vent

You have neither a usable opening nor a duct for releasing humid air outside. Condenser tumble dryers, particularly heat pump models, avoid the need for an external connection, provided you allow the required space and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Households planning a stacked installation

You want to place the tumble dryer above the washing machine to save space. Compatibility depends on the exact model references and the intended stacking kit, not simply on the appliances’ apparent width.

Buying criteria

Heat pump

Best choice: for a new tumble dryer in France, particularly when no dedicated external duct is available.

Compare: the energy label, eco programme duration, noise, capacity and maintenance requirements vary by model.

Standard condenser

Where it fits: this technology mainly applies to an appliance you already own or an offer whose status needs to be checked.

Important: it is not the usual option for a new appliance placed on the EU market since July 2025.

External venting

Consider it: only if an opening to the outside or a suitable duct is genuinely available for the installation.

Important: check the appliance’s precise status before buying, as this technology is not the standard solution for a current new model.

ADEME, UFC-Que Choisir, GIFAM and the European Commission mainly emphasise ventilation, technology, the energy label and installation requirements.

Priority What to check Your needs
Humidity and ventilation Check whether drying clothes on an airer is common in your living areas. Maintain suitable ventilation: a tumble dryer cannot diagnose a problem with the property. I want to reduce the amount of damp laundry left in the room for long periods, without treating the appliance as a solution to poor ventilation.
Installation A vented model requires an external opening or duct. For a condenser model, check the tank, whether it can be connected to a waste outlet and the installation dimensions. My home may not have an external duct, and I need to know where condensed water will be collected or discharged.
Consumption and energy label Compare models with the same A to G label. Note the kWh per 100 eco cycles, eco programme duration, capacity and noise level. I want to compare running costs using clear data, rather than relying solely on an old energy class or a brand promise.
Capacity and everyday use Choose a capacity that matches your usual laundry loads. Check the noise level, programmes, maintenance and the compatibility of any stacking kit. I am looking for an appliance suited to my usual loads, the available space and the time I can devote to maintenance.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Buying a tumble dryer to deal with persistent damp

Air-drying laundry adds moisture to the home, but an appliance cannot replace effective ventilation or identify a structural problem with the property.

Choose a tumble dryer to limit the amount of damp laundry dried indoors. If condensation or damp persists beyond this use, have the issue investigated separately.

  • Comparing an old A+++ class with a new A class

Since 1 July 2025, the scale for tumble dryers has changed from A to G; a class from the old label cannot be compared directly with the new one.

Compare models displaying the same current label: consumption per 100 eco cycles, duration, capacity and noise. The label’s QR code may provide access to product information registered in EPREL.

  • Assuming a vented model is suitable because a window is nearby

A vented tumble dryer requires an opening to the outside or a suitable duct. Being close to a window confirms neither the connection nor the installation conditions.

Check the installation before making any decision. For a new purchase, start with heat pump models and only consider venting for an existing appliance or a product whose status has been established.

  • Stacking appliances without a compatible stacking kit

Similar widths do not guarantee that two appliances will be stable or compatible. Kits are designed for specific model references, brands and depths.

Check the washing machine, tumble dryer and kit references in the manufacturer’s documentation before buying. Do not assume that a kit’s compatibility extends to another brand.

A compatible stacking kit and its installation may be required depending on your setup.

Brand guide

Bosch

The Bosch range lets you compare heat pump tumble dryers in different capacities, along with the drainage and maintenance options specific to each model.

  • For the WQG24502FR, Bosch states an 8 kg capacity, a noise level of 61 dB and a water drainage hose.
  • AutoDry and the self-cleaning condenser are features advertised for this model, not for the entire range.

Miele

Miele offers, among other options, 8 and 9 kg heat pump tumble dryers for households comparing capacity, water management and fabric-care features across different models.

  • Miele presents the TEA525WP 8kg Active as an 8 kg heat pump model with a condensation tank and integrated drainage kit.
  • Gentle drying claims are based on the manufacturer’s statements; also compare the label, eco duration and noise level of your chosen model.

Beko

Beko’s range includes heat pump tumble dryers for comparing capacity, condensation systems and maintenance solutions across different model references.

  • Beko describes the heat pump as a system that recovers heat within a condensation circuit.
  • The brand states that some heat pump models may have longer cycles and require more maintenance.

Electrolux

Electrolux is a useful reference when a stacked installation is being considered, thanks to stacking kits documented for certain front-loading appliances.

  • The E1WYHSK2 kit is advertised for front-loading Electrolux washing machines and tumble dryers measuring 52 to 67 cm in depth.
  • This compatibility does not automatically extend to other brands, dimensions or model references.

Frequently asked questions

Can a tumble dryer solve a damp problem in the home on its own?

No. It can reduce the need to dry damp laundry on an airer indoors, but it cannot diagnose or repair inadequate ventilation, water ingress or another issue with the property. ADEME states that air-drying releases significant amounts of moisture indoors; persistent damp should be investigated separately.

Can you still choose a new vented or standard condenser tumble dryer in France?

For domestic tumble dryers placed on the EU market since 1 July 2025, the European Commission states that only heat pump technology is permitted. Vented or standard condenser appliances may relate to equipment you already own or to a particular listing whose status must be checked.

What should you look for on the new energy label?

Compare the A to G scale, consumption per 100 cycles of the eco programme, the programme’s maximum capacity, its duration and the noise level. For a condenser tumble dryer, the label also includes information about water collection; the QR code links to product information registered in EPREL.

Can I put the tumble dryer on top of the washing machine to save space?

Yes, but only with a stacking solution explicitly compatible with both appliances and their dimensions. For example, Electrolux designed its E1WYHSK2 kit for front-loading Electrolux appliances measuring 52 to 67 cm in depth; this range does not confirm that another combination will be suitable.

Does a heat pump tumble dryer require a duct or a water supply?

An external duct is not required for a heat pump condenser tumble dryer. Water management does depend on the model, however: check whether it has a tank and, if you want to avoid emptying it, whether a water drainage hose can be fitted and what conditions are specified in the manual.
