Which households is it for?

Households without reliable outdoor drying space

If you do not have a usable outdoor space on a regular basis, the aim is to reduce the amount of damp laundry taking up space while choosing an appliance that suits your room. In its 2023 Q-WASH study, ADEME recommends a large, well-ventilated room or one equipped with mechanical ventilation extraction when laundry is dried indoors.

Households drying several loads a week

For frequent washing, compare usable capacity, Eco programme duration, energy consumption per cycle and noise levels between models with a similar capacity. A heat pump generally reduces energy consumption compared with older technologies, but its cycle may take longer.

People who dry delicate fabrics

If you dry fabrics that are suitable for tumble drying but sensitive to heat, check the programmes available and the care instructions for each garment. Manufacturers describe heat-pump drying as operating at a more moderate temperature; check the specifications for the exact model.

What to check before buying

Heat-pump condenser

Choose this: for a new appliance in France, particularly if there is no dedicated external air outlet.

Bear in mind: the programme may take longer; compare the Eco duration and energy consumption per cycle between appliances with a similar capacity.

Standard condenser

Consider this: as a reference point for an appliance you already own or a second-hand listing.

Good to know: this technology is not the usual route for buying new since the European requirements introduced in July 2025 came into force.

External venting

Consider this: to understand an existing installation with ducting and a properly functioning outlet to the exterior.

Check this: this solution requires external venting and is not the standard route for buying a new appliance in France.

Priority What to check Your needs
Humidity and indoor air Condenser technology; water tank management or connection to a drain; room ventilation conditions. I want to avoid damp laundry being left in a room for too long. A tumble dryer does not replace airing your home or following the installation instructions.
Installation Width, depth, height, clearances, door-opening direction, electrical socket and stacking-kit compatibility. My chosen location may not have an external outlet. A condenser appliance does not require an external air duct, but condensed water must be managed according to the model.
Energy and duration A to G label, weighted energy consumption per cycle, Eco programme duration at full load and rated capacity. I am looking for a clear balance between drying time and running costs. The European EPREL database allows you to compare these figures for models with a similar format and capacity.
Capacity Capacity in kg of dry laundry, the amount actually dried after a wash and Eco duration at full load. I want to dry my usual loads without assuming that the drum must necessarily have exactly the same capacity as the washing machine.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Treating older technologies as equivalent new options

Since 1 July 2025, the European Commission has specified that only heat-pump tumble dryers may be placed on the EU market. An old A+++ to D label or an older product sheet may therefore describe an appliance that is not a usual new-buy option.

For a new purchase, start with a heat-pump model and check the exact reference, the current A to G label, the capacity and the EPREL data.

Depending on the model and installation, a drain hose or stacking kit may be required.

  • Comparing brand promises rather than the exact model

Claims about reduced energy consumption or fabric care may be calculated against older appliances from the same brand or under specific conditions. Cleaning, crease-release and connection features vary between references.

Use these features as search criteria, then compare the regulatory label, EPREL, the Eco programme, the manual and the accessories included with the chosen reference.

Brand benchmarks

Beko

In France, Beko offers heat-pump tumble dryers and provides useful explanations about condensation, direct drainage and the balance between cycle duration and energy consumption.

  • According to Beko, the heat pump recovers and reuses warm air, operating at a lower temperature.
  • Information about older technologies should be read in light of the European requirements applicable to new appliances since July 2025.

Bosch

Bosch can be used as a benchmark when comparing heat-pump tumble dryers with drying sensors, fluff management and access to spare parts by appliance reference.

  • According to Bosch, self-cleaning condenser or AutoClean systems limit fluff build-up on certain models.
  • Compare the label, Eco duration and exact model sheet: the brand’s stated energy comparisons do not automatically apply to other manufacturers.

Miele

In France, Miele offers 8 and 9 kg heat-pump tumble dryers, with fabric-care, connectivity and stacking options depending on the model and accessories.

  • Miele generally recommends matching the tumble dryer’s maximum capacity to that of the washing machine to make it easier to run consecutive cycles.
  • This recommendation should be considered alongside the loads actually dried, the stacking kit selected and the model’s installation requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Can you still buy a new vented or standard condenser tumble dryer in France?

For a new tumble dryer placed on the EU market since 1 July 2025, no: the European Commission states that only heat-pump models may be placed on the market. An old listing or an old label therefore does not prove that a model is currently available as a new, marketable option. This rule alone does not determine whether a second-hand or already-owned appliance may be resold.

Do you need an external outlet in a flat?

An external outlet is required for a vented tumble dryer because moist air is discharged outside through a duct. A condenser appliance, including a heat-pump model, condenses water into a tank or can send it to a drain, depending on the model. Also check the dimensions, clearances, electrical socket, room ventilation and manual.

Which figures should you compare beyond the energy rating?

Compare the rated capacity, weighted energy consumption per cycle, Eco programme duration at full load, noise level and condensation efficiency. The European EPREL database displays these parameters for registered models; compare appliances with similar capacities and formats. Since July 2025, the regulatory scale has run from A to G.

Does the tumble dryer’s capacity have to match the washing machine’s?

Not necessarily. The washing machine’s capacity is a useful benchmark if you want to dry a full wash, and Miele generally recommends the same capacity to make it easier to run consecutive cycles. Your choice also depends on the amount of laundry actually dried, the size of your household and fabrics that cannot be tumble dried.

What should you check about spare parts and after-sales support?

For domestic drum tumble dryers, the DGCCRF states that certain spare parts must remain available throughout the marketing period and for a further minimum period of ten years. Ask the seller how long the manufacturer has committed to providing them, and check the list of parts, their availability and the ordering process.
