Who are these solutions for?
Your choice depends as much on the space available and the room’s ventilation as it does on how much laundry you need to dry.
Households doing laundry frequently
If you regularly need to dry a full load without leaving an airer set up, compare tumble dryers by capacity, energy use and maintenance. A drum dryer lets you collect your laundry at the end of a cycle, provided you have room for the appliance.
Airer users concerned about humidity
If you want to keep using your airer, a dehumidifier can help manage the room’s humidity while your laundry dries. However, you’ll still need space for your laundry and should check the room’s existing ventilation. ADEME notes that drying laundry indoors releases a lot of moisture into the air.
Households short on space
Before adding an appliance, check where you’ll put the laundry and the appliance, and where the water will drain if needed. If you prefer using an airer to limit electricity use, this option requires a room with adequate ventilation or suitable extraction.
How do the options compare?
First, decide whether your priority is drying a load in a drum or continuing to use an airer. The space available and the room’s ventilation will then determine whether the latter is suitable.
Heat pump tumble dryer
Consider this if: you do laundry regularly, have room for an appliance and want dry laundry at the end of a cycle.
Bear in mind: electricity use, dealing with the collected water and the maintenance set out in the manual. UFC-Que Choisir reports that heat pump models generally use less energy than conventional tumble dryers, which can have shorter cycles.
Dehumidifier and airer
Consider this if: you’re keeping your airer and want to manage the room’s humidity while your laundry dries.
Bear in mind: the airer will still take up space, the collected water needs to be emptied or drained, and the appliance does not replace ventilation in your home.
Airer and existing ventilation
Consider this if: you have a moderate amount of laundry and genuinely have access to a well-ventilated room or one with extraction.
Bear in mind: your laundry will take up space in the room while it dries. ADEME notes that drying laundry indoors releases a lot of moisture — so don’t rely on an airer alone if the humidity persists.
| What matters to you |
What to check |
Who this suits |
| Dry laundry at the end of a cycle |
Tumble dryer capacity in kg compared with your usual loads ; energy use in kWh/100 cycles. |
When I have several loads of laundry to get through, I want a dry load without taking up space with an airer. Around 42 % of consumers put predictable drying results first. |
| Humidity around the airer |
Extraction capacity under the stated test conditions, recommended room size and whether it uses a tank or continuous drainage. |
I want to keep using my airer, but I’m concerned about the moisture it adds to the room. For around 33 % of consumers, managing humidity comes before other factors. |
| Space and everyday use |
Space taken up by the appliance and airer, noise in an occupied room, and available ventilation if laundry is air-dried. |
In a small home, I need to be able to move around and put out my laundry without adding an unreasonable inconvenience. Space and energy-efficient use are the top priorities for around 25 % of consumers. |
Brands to know when comparing
These ranges give you options to compare across both types of appliance ; check the specifications for each model before you buy.
Bosch
Bosch Électroménager France’s range of heat pump tumble dryers includes 8 and 9 kg models.
- Model specifications let you compare capacity and energy figures for each individual model.
- Also check the dimensions and maintenance requirements of your chosen model : specifications for one model won’t necessarily apply to the whole range.
Electrolux
The brand offers tumble dryers with fabric programmes and, depending on the model, humidity sensors.
- Electrolux lists the EW7H5125EU as having an 8 kg capacity, energy use of 128 kWh/100 cycles and a noise level of 66 dB.
- For this model, the brand specifies installation in a room between 5 °C and 35 °C, and recommends maintaining the filter and condenser as instructed in the manual.
Rowenta
Its dehumidifier range includes models designed to help with drying laundry on an airer.
- For the Extrême Dry Compact+ DH5260F0, Rowenta lists extraction of 16 L/day, a 3 L tank and a maximum floor area of 40 m², subject to the model’s specified conditions.
- These figures and the brand’s claims about faster drying don’t guarantee the same results in your room ; check its volume and how the water will be drained.
De'Longhi
The Tasciugo range includes dehumidifiers with different rated capacities for rooms and enclosed spaces.
- The catalogue lets you choose a model based on its capacity and the layout of your room.
- Check how the water drains and the noise level of the specific model. A dehumidifier shouldn’t be treated as a replacement for ventilation.

Frequently asked questions
Can a dehumidifier replace ventilation or a mechanical ventilation system while laundry is drying ?
No : it can help when you’re drying laundry on an airer, but it doesn’t replace effective ventilation or extraction. ADEME recommends using a large, well-ventilated room or one with an extraction vent, and advises checking the ventilation if humidity remains a problem in your home.
What should I compare when choosing a more energy-efficient tumble dryer ?
Compare the energy use in kWh/100 cycles on the label applicable to the model, then choose a capacity that suits your loads. For tumble dryers covered by the new EU energy label from 1 July 2025, the European Commission specifies an A to G scale. Also follow the maintenance instructions for the filter and condenser.
Why check a dehumidifier’s tank and drainage ?
The collected water needs to be emptied or drained while the appliance is being used with an airer. If you plan to run it for several hours, compare the tank sizes and check whether continuous drainage, if available, can be set up according to the manual.
Should you rule out a tumble dryer with an old A+++ rating ?
No : an A+++ rating under the old scale cannot be compared directly with a rating under the new A to G scale. The European Commission dates the change in energy labelling to 1 July 2025 ; to compare two appliances, check their energy use and the label applicable to each rather than relying on the letters alone.
