Which households are they for?

Households that dry laundry several times a week

A dedicated appliance can be a good fit if its capacity matches your usual laundry volume and its energy consumption is suitable for regular use. UFC-Que Choisir recommends considering both the size of your household and the capacity of your washing machine.

Homes without an external vent

A condenser model, including a heat pump dryer, avoids the need to connect a duct to the outside. A vented model, on the other hand, requires an external opening or ventilation duct, according to UFC-Que Choisir.

Households focused on cycle time or purchase cost

A standard condenser dryer may be worth considering when cycle speed or the initial cost matters most, bearing in mind that it generally uses more electricity than a heat pump model.

Priorities before buying

Start by checking the installation requirements, then compare the capacity, energy label, Eco programme duration and maintenance requirements for the specific model.

Priority What to check Your needs
Room and ventilation Drying technology, dimensions, depth with the door open, door opening direction and clearance for movement. For a vented model, confirm that there is an external opening or duct. I want an appliance that fits into the room without assuming that an existing duct can be used.
Energy consumption and duration Compare the A to G energy label, weighted energy consumption per 100 cycles and the Eco programme duration between appliances with a similar capacity. I can prioritise a heat pump model if lower energy consumption matters more to me than the maximum cycle duration.
Drying capacity Match the capacity in kg of dry laundry to your usual loads and your washing machine. For a washer-dryer, check the washing and drying capacities separately. My loads should dry without routinely having to be split, but I do not want to choose a drum that is too large for my needs.
Maintenance Check the required maintenance for the lint filter, microfilter, condenser and water tank. Also check what a self-cleaning condenser actually automates. I prefer a maintenance routine that fits my schedule, as clogged filters and condensers can lengthen cycles.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Buying a vented model before checking the external outlet

A vented tumble dryer requires a suitable room and an opening or duct to expel hot, moisture-laden air outside.

Before placing your order, check the permitted duct route, any restrictions imposed by your landlord or property management company, and the instructions in the manual.

  • Choosing based solely on the purchase price or speed

Standard condenser and vented models can offer faster cycles, but they generally use more electricity than a heat pump dryer.

Compare the energy label, weighted consumption per 100 cycles, Eco duration and purchase price before making your decision.

Frequently asked questions

Can a vented tumble dryer be installed in any room?

No. It requires a suitable room and a way to vent hot, moisture-laden air outside through an opening or duct. Do not assume that an MVHR system, existing duct or ductwork in your home is suitable without checking the manual, property rules and, where necessary, seeking professional advice.

What capacity should you choose in relation to your washing machine?

Start with the amount of laundry you actually dry and match it to your washing machine’s capacity. A dedicated tumble dryer should accommodate your usual loads without regularly requiring them to be split; for a washer-dryer, check the drying capacity separately, as it is lower than the washing capacity.

Can the energy label be used to compare all tumble dryers?

Yes, for the domestic drum tumble dryers covered by European energy-labelling regulations. Compare appliances with similar capacities and intended uses, then also look at the Eco programme duration, noise level and installation requirements.

Do you only need to clean the lint filter?

No. Follow the manual’s instructions for the lint filter, microfilter, condenser and water tank. In a Que Choisir test, failing to clean the condenser or microfilter lengthened cycles and increased energy consumption on some models; a self-cleaning system does not necessarily replace all the required maintenance.
