What to check before you choose
For indoor air-drying, ADEME recommends a large, well-ventilated room or one with a mechanical ventilation extractor. If this suits your needs, compare it with the permanent space and electricity a tumble dryer would require.
| Consideration |
What to check |
Who it matters to |
| Location and ventilation |
Instructions for the specific model, room ventilation and required clearances. For a vented model, check that there is a suitable outside outlet. |
If I don’t have an outside vent, I want to know whether the appliance can be installed in the room I have in mind and whether the ventilation is suitable. Around 36 % of consumers prioritise whether the location is suitable. |
| Energy use |
The energy label for the specific model and its stated energy use, taking into account how many cycles you expect to run. |
When I do laundry frequently, I compare electricity use rather than looking only at the upfront cost. Around 29 % of consumers prioritise running costs. |
| Space and capacity |
Dimensions, door access and the capacity stated for the specific model. Also check how condensed water is handled. |
If space is limited, I want the appliance to fit where I plan to put it and handle the loads I expect to dry. Space and capacity are the priority for around 21 % of consumers. |
| Whether you need to buy one |
Whether you can put the clothes airer in a large, well-ventilated room or one with a mechanical ventilation extractor. |
If I can dry my laundry elsewhere, I first check whether this is enough to free up my living space. Around 14 % of consumers prioritise the option of going without an appliance. |

Frequently asked questions
Do you have to buy a tumble dryer if your clothes airer is in the living room ?
No, not if you can dry your laundry elsewhere in suitable conditions. For indoor air-drying, ADEME recommends a large, well-ventilated room or one with a mechanical ventilation extractor. Compare this option with the permanent space and electricity an appliance would require.
Where does the water go in a condenser tumble dryer ?
Depending on the model and how it is connected, the water is collected in a tank or directed to a drain. The European Commission describes these two ways of handling condensed water. Check the manual and make sure you can access the tank or connection before buying.
What maintenance does a tumble dryer need ?
Follow the manual for your model when cleaning the filters, emptying the tank if you use one and maintaining accessible parts. Bosch recommends cleaning the fluff filter after every use in its maintenance advice ; a self-cleaning condenser feature doesn’t mean you can ignore the model’s other maintenance instructions.
Which energy label should you check on a new tumble dryer ?
Check the A to G label for the exact model. The European Commission says that this new label has applied to the tumble dryers concerned since 1 July 2025 ; the former A+++ to D scale is not directly equivalent.
Is the sale of a conventional or vented tumble dryer automatically banned ?
No. You need to distinguish between placing a new appliance on the market and selling existing stock that has already been placed on the market. The European Commission’s information says that, from 1 July 2025, new tumble dryers over 3 kg placed on the EU market must use a heat pump. Check the status of the appliance in question rather than assuming it from the technology alone.
