Who is a floor washer for?
A floor washer is primarily designed for regular wet cleaning on a compatible floor covering. To decide whether it’s right for your home, distinguish between marks that need washing and dry debris that needs vacuuming.
Homes with tiled floors and frequent wet spills
If everyday splashes and marks are why you clean your floors, a floor washer can help you keep your tiles in good condition. However, UFC-Que Choisir points out that it has limited effect on stubborn stains.
People who want to cut down on repeated cleaning
Some manufacturers say their models can pick up small everyday messes while washing. This may suit you if you often have both wet marks and small bits of debris to deal with, but you’ll still need a vacuum cleaner for dry floors.
People who pay attention to appliance maintenance
If the time you spend cleaning the appliance after each session matters as much as washing the floor, check how easy it is to reach the tanks, roller and filter. Also check which replacement parts your specific model needs and how often they should be replaced.
Which features matter for your needs?
If your home is mostly tiled or has compatible hard floors, first check the floor covering, then consider the type of dirt you need to tackle and the maintenance routine you’re genuinely prepared to follow.
| What matters |
What to check |
Who is it for? |
| Floor covering and stains |
Check the manual to make sure the floor and accessory are compatible. Do not use a wet floor washer on wooden flooring. |
If my floor has several different coverings or tough stains, I want to know where I can use the appliance and what it can handle. Around 29% of consumers put compatibility and the type of stains first. |
| Everyday washing |
Check whether the appliance picks up small bits of dirt while washing; this is different from vacuuming dust off a dry floor. |
When wet marks regularly build up on my tiles, reducing the number of times I need to wash the floor is my priority. This is the main concern for around 29% of consumers. |
| Cleaning the appliance after use |
Check what you need to do with the tanks, roller and filter, as well as how often the model’s parts need replacing. |
I can wash the floor regularly, but I want to be able to empty, rinse and dry the appliance without skipping this step. Around 24% of consumers prioritise this routine and the cost of replacement parts. |
| Moving around and power |
Compare the cable length, or the stated battery life and charging time, with the length of your cleaning sessions. |
When moving from room to room, I prefer either the freedom of a cordless model or not having to recharge. Moving around or power requirements come first for around 18% of consumers. |
If you clean several rooms and don’t want to keep moving a cable, look at cordless models and compare their stated battery life with the length of your usual cleaning session. A corded model doesn’t need recharging, but you’ll need to work around sockets and the cable will restrict your movement. If your main task is picking up dust and crumbs from dry floors, stick with a vacuum cleaner. For a small area or a localised stain, a mop is another option to consider.
Brands to know for hard floors
These ranges offer useful points of comparison for battery life, accessories and maintenance. Features listed for one model don’t necessarily apply to every appliance from the same brand.
Kärcher
The FC range includes hard floor cleaners and universal rollers, as well as rollers designed for specific floor coverings.
- Kärcher says the FC 7 Cordless picks up everyday dry and wet dirt and has a battery life of 45 minutes.
- Kärcher rollers designed for tiles and stone are not recommended for marble. Check that your chosen accessory is suitable for your floor, and don’t use it on wooden flooring.
Rowenta
The X-Clean range includes cordless appliances for washing hard floors, with replacement rollers and filters available.
- Rowenta states that the X-Clean 10 has a battery life of up to 60 minutes.
- For this model, Rowenta recommends replacing the roller and filter every 100 cycles or every six months if you use the appliance at least three times a week.
Tineco
The FLOOR ONE range includes cordless floor washers, with some models designed to reach under furniture.
- Tineco states that the FLOOR ONE S7 Stretch has a battery life of up to 75 minutes.
- The stated battery life alone doesn’t tell you how well the appliance cleans. Check the maintenance instructions for the model you’re considering, too.
Machines for these needs
This selection includes cordless floor washers for hard floors and a corded steam mop. The steam mop is designed for wet cleaning and is not listed as having a function for vacuuming dry debris. For every appliance, check its manual to make sure it’s compatible with your floor covering.

Frequently asked questions
Can a wet floor washer replace a vacuum cleaner on tiled floors?
Not for everyday vacuuming of dust and dry debris: UFC-Que Choisir says a wet floor cleaner doesn’t replace a vacuum cleaner. Some manufacturers say their models can pick up small bits of dirt while washing, but this doesn’t cover every dry vacuuming need.
Can you use a wet floor washer on wooden flooring?
For this type of use, don’t use a wet floor cleaner on wooden flooring, in line with UFC-Que Choisir’s recommendation. A manufacturer’s compatibility claim for one particular finish shouldn’t be taken to mean that the appliance is suitable for every type of wooden flooring.
What should you clean after washing your floors?
Empty and maintain the tanks, roller or pads, and filters in line with the model’s manual. A self-cleaning cycle can take care of some of the work, but you’ll still need to follow the instructions for removable parts.
Which replacement parts should you check before choosing a floor washer?
Check which rollers, filters and cleaning products are compatible with the exact model, then find out how often they need replacing. For the X-Clean 10, Rowenta recommends replacing the roller and filter every 100 cycles or every six months if the appliance is used at least three times a week.
What can you do in France if the appliance doesn’t match its description?
If a business sells an appliance to a consumer in France, the legal guarantee of conformity applies to new, second-hand and refurbished goods, according to the Ministry of the Economy. Keep your proof of purchase and the product description so you can report a lack of conformity to the seller. This guarantee is separate from a straightforward return because you’ve changed your mind.
