Who is this choice for?

People with a Nespresso® Original machine

You’d like to make coffee and, with a tea or herbal infusion option explicitly marked as compatible, another drink to enjoy with biscuits. The Carte Noire and Lipton ranges described by Carte Noire and Auchan illustrate these two uses.

People with an A Modo Mio or Iperespresso machine

Your first priority is finding capsules in the right format for your machine: Lavazza designs its A Modo Mio capsules for that system, while illy reserves its Iperespresso capsules for compatible machines.

People who choose their coffee to go with biscuits

You’re deciding between a short espresso, a lungo or a decaffeinated coffee. Once you’ve confirmed your machine’s compatibility, the drink type on the box can help you choose.

What to check before you choose

Your machine’s system determines which capsules you can use. Then you can choose between tea, espresso and lungo, depending on what you’d like to serve with your biscuits.

Nespresso® Original

Consider this if : your machine uses this system and you want the choice of coffee capsules as well as compatible tea options.

Bear in mind : compatibility with Nespresso® Original doesn’t extend to other systems, and tea has its own preparation method.

Lavazza A Modo Mio

Consider this if : you have an A Modo Mio machine and want to choose from the coffee profiles in this Lavazza range.

Bear in mind : A Modo Mio capsules are designed for this system and aren’t interchangeable with Lavazza capsules compatible with Nespresso® Original.

illy Iperespresso

Consider this if : your machine uses Iperespresso and you’re looking for a coffee from this range, particularly a decaffeinated option.

Bear in mind : Iperespresso capsules and illy capsules compatible with Nespresso® Original belong to two separate ranges.

Consideration What to check Who is it for?
Machine compatibility Compare the system listed on your machine with the one on the box: Nespresso® Original, A Modo Mio or Iperespresso. If I already own a machine, I want to avoid buying capsules I can’t use; around 36% of consumers prioritise compatibility.
Switching between tea and coffee For tea, look for a capsule clearly labelled as tea, then check which machines it’s compatible with and how to prepare it. I want to serve tea as well as coffee without changing machines; around 29% of consumers prioritise having both options.
Coffee to enjoy with biscuits Check the cup type listed for the capsule — espresso, lungo or ristretto — then look at the flavour profile described by the brand. With biscuits, I’d rather choose the length and character of my coffee to suit the occasion; around 21% of consumers prioritise this kind of choice.
Decaffeinated options and practical considerations Check whether a decaffeinated option is available in the right format, then consult your machine’s manual and the product’s recycling instructions. When I’d like a decaffeinated coffee, care and recycling matter too; around 14% of consumers highlight these considerations.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a box just because it says ‘espresso’

This describes the coffee, not the capsule format. Lavazza, illy and Carte Noire distinguish between systems such as A Modo Mio, Iperespresso and Nespresso® Original.

Make a note of your machine’s system and check the box for the same compatibility information before choosing a coffee profile.

  • Assuming a coffee capsule can also make tea

A tea capsule is a separate product. Auchan lists a Lipton Marrakech Mint option compatible with Nespresso®, with its own preparation instructions.

To serve tea with biscuits, choose a capsule labelled ‘tea’ or ‘herbal infusion’ and follow its instructions, particularly if they tell you to remove a seal or rinse the machine.

  • Assuming ‘compostable’ means suitable for home composting

Lavazza states that its compostability claim for the relevant A Modo Mio capsules applies to industrial composting facilities only. This doesn’t mean they can go in your home compost bin.

Check the information on the product you’ve bought and its recycling labels before disposing of the capsule and packaging.

  • Waiting for a fault before descaling

Limescale can affect how your machine works. How often you need to maintain it depends on the instructions for your model.

Follow your machine’s manual. For its Vertuo maintenance kit, Nespresso recommends descaling every three months or after around 300 capsules.

Brands to consider for your machine

These brands offer different ranges and formats. Their inclusion here doesn’t mean that all their capsules will work with the same machine.

Lavazza

Lavazza distinguishes its A Modo Mio range from the capsules it describes as compatible with Nespresso® Original.

  • According to Lavazza, the A Modo Mio range includes several coffee profiles and decaffeinated options.
  • An A Modo Mio capsule isn’t interchangeable with a Lavazza capsule compatible with Nespresso® Original; check the range shown on the box.

illy

illy offers capsules for its Iperespresso system, as well as a separate range compatible with Nespresso® Original.

  • The Iperespresso range includes a decaffeinated option that illy lists for Iperespresso machines.
  • The fact that illy also sells capsules compatible with Nespresso® Original doesn’t make the two formats interchangeable.

Carte Noire

Carte Noire offers a range of capsules compatible with Nespresso® Original, with different types of coffee including espresso, lungo and decaffeinated options.

  • Carte Noire describes its Lungo Classique N°6 as balanced and aromatic — worth considering if you prefer a longer coffee with biscuits.
  • This information applies to options compatible with Nespresso® Original; check your machine’s system.

Carrefour Selection / Carrefour Extra

Carrefour offers coffee capsules compatible with Nespresso in a range of profiles and pack sizes.

  • The Carrefour Selection Expresso Doux option listed by the retailer has an intensity rating of 4, helping you identify this particular profile.
  • Check the coffee type, capsule count and compatibility on each box; an intensity rating alone doesn’t describe the flavour.

Plantation (Marque Repère, E.Leclerc)

E.Leclerc lists Plantation capsules under its Marque Repère brand alongside other pod and capsule formats.

  • A 30-capsule box of Plantation aluminium capsules labelled ‘balanced coffee’ is available.
  • The range includes several systems, so check the compatibility of the product you choose rather than relying on information for a different Plantation product.

Auchan

Auchan offers coffee capsules compatible with Nespresso and also lists Lipton tea capsules for this system.

  • The Lipton tea options listed by Auchan are worth exploring if you’d like a tea capsule separate from your coffee capsules.
  • Check machine compatibility and preparation instructions for each product, especially tea capsules.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use any capsule in my espresso machine?

No. Choose a capsule that specifically states it’s compatible with your machine’s system. Lavazza designs A Modo Mio capsules for the corresponding machines, illy reserves Iperespresso for its own system, and Carte Noire lists Nespresso® Original compatibility for its compatible range.

Can you make tea with a Nespresso® Original machine?

Yes, as long as the tea capsule explicitly states that it’s compatible with your machine. Auchan lists a Lipton Marrakech Mint option for this system; check the list of compatible machines and the instructions on the box you choose, as tea may require a particular preparation method.

Espresso or lungo: which goes best with biscuits?

Choose a lungo if you’d like a longer cup, or an espresso if you prefer a shorter coffee with your biscuits. Carte Noire describes its Lungo Classique N°6 as balanced and aromatic. Whatever profile you’re after, check that the capsule is compatible first.

Are there decaffeinated capsules for these systems?

Yes. Carte Noire offers decaffeinated options in its range compatible with Nespresso® Original, while illy has a decaffeinated Iperespresso option. The Iperespresso capsule described by illy is designed only for machines in that system, so check the format before buying.

How should I plan for machine care and capsule recycling?

Follow your machine’s manual for descaling and the recycling instructions on each product or pack. Nespresso recommends descaling every three months or after around 300 capsules for its Vertuo maintenance kit. Lavazza states that the compostability of the relevant A Modo Mio capsules applies to industrial composting, and not necessarily to home composting.
