Buying Switch games in French seems straightforward. Yet a few details can turn a great deal into a disappointing purchase. A French-language cover doesn’t necessarily mean the voices, subtitles or cartridge content are in French too. Similarly, a game advertised as compatible with the Switch 2 might be a dedicated edition, an upgrade or a different version altogether.
Before comparing Nintendo Switch games, Switch 2 games or physical video games, check three essential points: the languages actually available, compatibility with your console, and the exact content of the edition.
The phrase “French version” can cover several realities:
For example, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe is a British import that can be played in French when the console is set to that language. That doesn’t mean it’s an edition with an exclusively French-language cartridge.
A Nintendo Switch game isn’t automatically a Switch 2 edition. Some titles work on both generations, while others are reserved for the new console. A digital game may also require a Nintendo account, an internet connection and enough storage space.
Before confirming your purchase, always check the Platform line: Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED, Switch 2, PlayStation 5 or PC Windows. This check will save you from ordering a Switch 2 game for a standard Switch, for instance.
A standard edition, a Deluxe edition, a Collector edition and a download code don’t offer the same experience. In particular, check:
A Collector edition can appeal to fans of physical products. However, its figurines, cards or books push up the price and require enough storage space.
Look for a precise indication such as “text in French”, “French audio” or “playable in French via console settings”. For a family, menus and instructions in French are generally more important than full voice acting.
Product descriptions can vary depending on the region of sale. If in doubt, take the time to read the detailed description before ordering.
The number of players must match how you intend to play. Some games are strictly single-player, while others offer local, wireless or online multiplayer. For family play, also check how many controllers are needed.
New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe lets up to four people play on the same console. In contrast, Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster is designed for a solo adventure and requires a Switch 2.
PS5 games in French naturally require a PlayStation 5 with a disc drive if the product is sold on disc. For PC games in French, also check the compatible operating system, the download platform and the minimum system requirements.
The PEGI rating provides an age guide, but it doesn’t replace reading the description. A PEGI 3 title can be suitable for family play, while a PEGI 16 or PEGI 18 game contains themes intended for an adult audience.
For younger players, think about parental controls, session length and online features. A cartridge or disc is also a small item to keep out of reach of children under 3 years old.
Why this choice suits this profile: Its accessible controls and single-player or multiplayer modes make it an excellent starting point for discovering family games on Switch.
The description clearly states it’s a British import playable in French by adjusting the console settings.
164 levels, two adventures combined on the same card and up to four players locally.
Why this choice suits this profile: This edition is aimed at collectors who want a PC game accompanied by physical items and digital content.
The content is detailed: Steelbook case, world map, figurine, hardback book and digital codes.
A PEGI 18 PC edition with a branching storyline and collectable items with stated dimensions.
Why this choice suits this profile: RPG regulars on Switch who enjoy long sessions and customisation will find a particularly rich combat system here.
The platform is clearly stated: this title is designed exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2.
Over 20 jobs, the Brave & Default system, an HD remaster and mini-games linked to the console’s controls.

Check the product description and look for details about text, voices and subtitles. For an import, you may need to set the console language to French before launching the game.
A cartridge can work without a connection, but an update, additional content or a download code may require the internet. Also check the available storage space on your console.
The PEGI rating provides an age guide based on content. For a family purchase, compare this indication with the themes covered in the game, the multiplayer mode and the online features before ordering.
