Which format is right for you?

Someone living alone with existing connections

If you do your laundry regularly at home, compare the available space with the depth of a slim front-loader and the dimensions of a low-profile compact machine. Make sure the door can open without blocking your way, and that the capacity suits your usual loads.

A renter with a narrow doorway or bathroom

A top-loader may be a good option if width is limited, as it doesn’t need space in front for a door to open. You will, however, need room to lift the lid: the Proline PTL6100A listed by Darty is 40 cm wide, but also 61 cm deep.

A student without a permanent space for a washing machine

A mini washing machine can handle small loads of lightweight laundry, provided filling and draining it are practical. It may not replace a plumbed-in machine for sheets, bulky items or a week’s worth of laundry.

What should you check in a studio flat?

Start with the dimension that really limits where you can install the machine. Then check whether your chosen format can handle your usual loads without making everyday use more difficult.

Narrow top-loader

Consider it: if width is limited or there isn’t enough space in front of the machine for a front-loading door to open.

Bear in mind: you’ll need clearance above the lid, and a narrow top-loader can still be quite deep.

Slim front-loader

Consider it: if a front-loader’s width and height will fit, but its depth won’t.

Bear in mind: you’ll need space in front of the door and behind the machine for the connections.

Low-profile compact machine

Consider it: if space is limited in several dimensions but a plumbed-in machine is still an option.

Bear in mind: check the capacity and the space needed in front of the door on your chosen model.

Mini washing machine for occasional use

Consider it: for small loads when there’s no room for a standard machine to stay permanently installed.

Bear in mind: depending on the model, you may need to fill it by hand, drain the water and handle the laundry several times.

Consideration What to check What you need
Dimensions and access Measure the width, depth and height, as well as the delivery route. Allow for the door or lid to open and leave enough room for the hoses. I want to be able to load the machine without blocking the way or access to the bathroom.
Washing capacity Compare the capacity in kg of dry laundry with your actual loads, including sheets and towels. Que Choisir suggests 5 to 7 kg as a guide for one or two people. As someone living alone, I’m looking for a drum that suits my everyday laundry, without having to run extra cycles for the items I wash regularly.
Spin cycle and noise If the washing and spin capacities differ, compare both, along with the stated spin noise level. For the 400777 mini washing machine, tectake states a washing capacity of 4,5 kg and a spin capacity of 3,5 kg. The machine will be close to my living area, so I also need to think about where I can dry damp laundry.
Connections and maintenance Check the model’s instructions for the water inlet, drainage and electrical supply. Make sure the hoses won’t be trapped and that the filter will be accessible. I want to be able to use and maintain the machine where it’s installed, without having to move it every time it needs attention.

Which mistakes should you avoid?

  • Measuring only the floor space

A slim front-loader still needs room in front for its door to open, while a top-loader needs clearance above to lift the lid. Hoses and cables also take up space behind the machine.

Measure the space, openings and delivery route, then compare your measurements with the instructions for the exact model you’re considering.

If the existing connections aren’t suitable, separate work may be needed. Electrolux states that its installers don’t carry out plumbing or electrical work.

  • Automatically choosing the smallest drum

A low capacity may mean splitting your laundry across more cycles and make it harder to wash bulky items. Que Choisir suggests 5 to 7 kg as a guide for one or two people.

Think about your usual loads, especially sheets and towels, before choosing a mini format as your main washing machine.

  • Looking only at the spin speed

With some machines designed for occasional use, you can’t spin the whole wash load at once: tectake states a washing capacity of 4,5 kg and a spin capacity of 3,5 kg for the 400777 model.

Check both capacities separately, the stated noise level and how much room you have to dry your laundry.

  • Squeezing the machine into a space with no room for maintenance

If the filter or drain is difficult to reach, maintenance becomes more complicated. Bosch says a kinked, blocked or excessively inserted drain hose can prevent the machine from draining.

Make sure you can reach the connections and maintenance points, then follow the installation and levelling instructions for your chosen machine.

A closer look at some brands and models

These models illustrate different installation constraints; their inclusion here doesn’t mean they’re available from Joybuy.

Electrolux

One to consider if depth is your main constraint and there’s enough room for the width of a front-loader.

  • Electrolux France lists a 6 kg capacity, 1 200 rpm and a depth of 411 mm for the EW6S3626XA slim front-loader.
  • You’ll still need to check the door clearance, hoses and instructions for the specific model you choose.

Haier

The Mini Drum HW50-BP12307U1-S is an example of a low-profile compact machine for a space restricted in several dimensions.

  • Haier France lists dimensions of 510 × 492 × 700 mm, a capacity of 5 kg and a spin speed of 1 200 rpm for this model.
  • Check the door clearance and connections: the machine’s dimensions alone don’t tell you how much installation space you’ll need.

Proline

The PTL6100A top-loader listed by Darty is designed for spaces where width is limited.

  • Darty lists dimensions of 40 × 87 × 61 cm, a capacity of 6 kg and a maximum spin speed of 1 000 rpm.
  • Allow room to open the lid above the machine, and take its stated spin noise level of 78 dB into account when choosing where to put it.

tectake

The 400777 is an example of a semi-automatic mini washing machine for occasional use.

  • tectake lists two compartments, with a washing capacity of 4,5 kg and a spin capacity of 3,5 kg.
  • You’ll need to fill the machine, transfer the laundry to the spin compartment and drain the water.

A Joybuy option for occasional washing

The foldable mini washing machine below is suited to small occasional loads where space is limited. It doesn’t represent the other formats covered in this article.

10 L foldable mini washing machine with drain basket

10 L foldable mini washing machine, 2/5/10 min

This portable design is made for occasional washing when storage space is at a premium. The product title lists three cycle times of 2, 5 or 10 minutes, a 40 W motor, 320 rpm, a drain basket and suction cups. Before choosing it for your space, check the maximum load in kg, its dimensions when unfolded, and how it’s filled and drained.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install the washing machine a long way from the water inlet or drain?

First, check the model’s instructions, the length of its hoses and whether they can reach the connections without being trapped. Electrolux says its installers don’t supply extension hoses or carry out plumbing or electrical work. A machine designed for occasional use may also have a short hose.

Can a mini washing machine replace a student’s main machine?

It may work if you have small loads and don’t mind the extra handling. Que Choisir describes mini washing machines as occasional-use solutions. In particular, check whether there’s room for bulky items and, with a semi-automatic model, whether the spin capacity differs from the washing capacity.

Which figures on the energy label should I compare?

For household washing machines covered by EU energy labelling, compare the energy efficiency class and the energy consumption figure shown per 100 cycles. The European Commission lists both on the label; use the same measure when comparing two models.

Why should the drain filter be accessible in a studio flat?

So you can maintain the machine without having to pull it out of a cramped space. Check the route of the drain hose too: Bosch says a kinked, blocked or excessively inserted hose can prevent the machine from draining.
