Who are these options for?

Studio flat renter with no outdoor space

You want to free up your living space by putting away the clothes airer, without overlooking the moisture released by air-drying laundry. ADEME identifies this as a significant source of indoor humidity.

Someone with very little space

Choosing between a separate appliance and a washer-dryer depends as much on the space in front of the door as on the appliance’s dimensions and the amount of laundry you need to dry.

Household with an existing front-loading washing machine

Stacking the appliances can preserve the floor space taken up by your washing machine, as long as the two models and the stacking kit are compatible and there is enough headroom.

What should you check in a studio flat?

First, work out whether you have space for a second appliance, just one space on the floor, or enough headroom for a stacked installation. Then compare the practical requirements of the appliances that can actually be installed.

Criteria What to check What you need
Humidity and condensed water Check the manual to see whether water is collected in a tank or can be drained directly. If you still air-dry some laundry, ADEME recommends using a large, well-ventilated room or one fitted with a mechanical ventilation extract vent. I want to avoid leaving laundry to dry for a long time in my living space, and I need to know how to manage the water collected by the appliance.
Space required Measure the height, width and depth, as well as the clearance needed with the door open. Also allow for delivery access and the space needed for connections. I need enough room to load the laundry without blocking access around my studio flat.
Drying capacity For a washer-dryer, compare washing and drying capacities separately: UFC-Que Choisir says the drying capacity is lower than the washing capacity. Check the load limits for the programmes you plan to use. I want to know whether my usual laundry load will dry in one go or whether I’ll need to remove some of it first.
Electricity, cycle time and noise UFC-Que Choisir says a heat pump tumble dryer uses less electricity than a conventional condenser model. Also compare the stated energy consumption, cycle times and noise levels for the exact models you’re considering. For a washer-dryer, check the figures for the wash-and-dry cycle. If I often dry laundry in the room where I live, energy consumption, how long the appliance is in use and noise levels all matter when choosing a model.
Stacked installation Confirm that the two appliances and the stacking kit are compatible, then measure the available height. Siemens specifies that the tumble dryer goes on top of the washing machine. One of its kits requires a washing machine more than 55 cm deep; this requirement applies to that particular kit. I already have a front-loading washing machine and want to add a tumble dryer without needing a second space on the floor.

What mistakes should you avoid?

  • Looking only at the appliance’s dimensions

You’ll need more space when the door is open. For example, LG lists the RH8N14SL as 600 mm deep, but it measures 1 080 mm deep with the door open at 90°.

Before choosing a model, measure the space in front of the appliance, delivery access, and room for cables and hoses.

  • Confusing washing capacity with drying capacity

According to UFC-Que Choisir, a washer-dryer can dry a smaller load than it can wash. For example, Haier lists a washing capacity of 5 kg and a drying capacity of 2,5 kg for the HWD50-BP12307U1.

Compare the drying capacity with your usual laundry loads, not just the stated washing capacity.

If your wash load is larger than the drying capacity, you’ll need to remove some laundry before starting the drying cycle.

  • Stacking two appliances because they look the same size

Similar dimensions don’t mean the models and stacking kit are compatible. Siemens specifies that the tumble dryer must be placed on top of the washing machine.

Check which models are compatible with your chosen kit and follow the installation instructions for both appliances.

  • Forgetting about water and air-dried laundry

According to Whirlpool, whether a condenser dryer can be connected to a drain depends on the model. ADEME also highlights the significant amount of moisture released indoors by laundry drying on an airer.

Check the manual to see how the water is collected. If you still use a clothes airer, choose a large, well-ventilated room or one with a mechanical ventilation extract vent, in line with ADEME’s recommendations.

A few leading brands and models

These examples show which measurements and installation requirements to compare. Their specifications don’t apply to every appliance from the same brand.

Bosch

Bosch’s specifications for two heat pump tumble dryers let you compare their stated dimensions and noise levels.

  • Bosch lists the WQG2450SFR as 842 × 598 × 613 mm and 64 dB.
  • The WRB247C0FR is listed as 842 × 598 × 627 mm and 57 dB. Check the specifications for the exact model you’re considering rather than assuming these figures apply to the whole range.

LG

The RH8N14SL shows why it’s important to measure the space needed when the appliance is in use, not just its depth.

  • LG lists this model as 600 mm deep.
  • Its stated depth reaches 1 080 mm with the door open at 90°. Compare this measurement with the space in front of the spot where you plan to put it.

Haier

The HWD50-BP12307U1 washer-dryer is a practical example of the difference between washing and drying capacities.

  • Haier lists a washing capacity of 5 kg.
  • Its stated drying capacity is 2,5 kg, so a full washing load won’t be a full drying load.

Siemens

Siemens’ documentation sets out some practical requirements to check when stacking appliances.

  • Siemens specifies that the tumble dryer must be placed on top of the washing machine.
  • One of its kits is designed for a washing machine more than 55 cm deep. Check that the kit is compatible with your models.

Whirlpool

Whirlpool’s documentation notes that direct drainage for a condenser dryer depends on the model.

  • The FFTBCM118XBFR specifications list energy consumption of 4,72 kWh per cycle.
  • This figure applies to this model and can’t be used to estimate the energy consumption of another condenser dryer.

Drying options on Joybuy

These options include heat pump tumble dryers for a separate space and washer-dryers for when washing and drying need to share one appliance. For each model, compare the stated load capacity with your usual laundry loads and check the installation dimensions in the manual.

Frequently asked questions

Does a condenser dryer need an outlet to the outside?

No. Unlike a vented tumble dryer, it doesn’t need an external vent hose. Water is collected in a tank or, if the model allows, sent to a drain. Whirlpool specifies that direct drainage depends on the model.

Can you install a heat pump tumble dryer in a studio flat without a balcony?

Yes. Not having a balcony doesn’t mean this type of tumble dryer needs an external vent hose. Installation still depends on the available space, particularly with the door open, the connections and the instructions in the manual for your chosen model.

Can you put a tumble dryer on top of a washing machine without a stacking kit?

Don’t decide to stack appliances based on their dimensions alone. Confirm that both models can be stacked and use the compatible kit specified in their manuals. Siemens specifies that the tumble dryer goes on top of the washing machine.

Why should you check the drying capacity of a washer-dryer?

Because it’s lower than the washing capacity, as UFC-Que Choisir points out. You may need to reduce a full wash load before drying it. For example, the Haier HWD50-BP12307U1 is listed with a 5 kg washing capacity and a 2,5 kg drying capacity.

Which figures should you compare when using a washer-dryer?

Check the figures for the wash-and-dry cycle, not just those for washing. According to the European Commission, washer-dryer labels include information such as energy and water consumption, cycle duration and noise. Compare these figures with the load you actually plan to dry.
