Which option is right for you?

For mainly reheating meals

If reheating and defrosting are your main priorities, look at microwaves first, then check each model’s functions and how much worktop space it needs. Start by taking stock of your kitchenette: a student accommodation listing on Lokaviz shows that one may already include a hob and a microwave, although this example does not describe every studio flat.

For everyday cooking for one

Choose according to the meals you usually make: oven-baked dishes, cooking in a pan or saucepan, or meals prepared in a cooking pot. These uses call for different functions, even when each appliance is described as compact.

To make the most of limited worktop space

Compare the external dimensions and installation requirements, as well as the size of your dishes and the space you need for utensils. If you’re considering an induction hob, check that your existing saucepans and frying pans are compatible.

What should you check?

Start with the cooking you actually do, then rule out any appliances that won’t fit in a space that meets the requirements in their manual.

What to considerWhat to checkThink about your needs
Cooking method Check the exact functions: microwave and defrost, oven and grill, hob cooking or programmes in a cooking pot. Don’t assume every model in a category has the same functions. If I mainly reheat meals, a microwave may be enough. If I regularly roast, boil or simmer food, I’ll choose an appliance that can handle those tasks.
Available space Measure the available width, depth and height, as well as the space needed to open the door or lid. Follow the ventilation instructions in the manual; Whirlpool specifically says not to block a microwave’s vents or place anything on top of it. I want to be able to leave the appliance in place without blocking the worktop or its vents.
Dishes and cookware Check the size of dishes that fit in a mini oven and the usable capacity of a multicooker. For induction, Tefal recommends cookware with a flat base that attracts a magnet and is suitable for the cooking zone. My dishes need to fit in the oven, or my saucepans need to work with the hob; a large cooking pot won’t necessarily suit the portions I make.
Manual and product updates Check the instructions for the exact model, keep its reference number and look for any recalls on RappelConso. The DGCCRF warns that electrical equipment can pose risks, including electric shock, fire and burns. I want to understand how to install and use the appliance, and be able to identify my exact model if an alert is issued.

What should you watch out for?

  • Assuming a microwave can handle every type of cooking

What it can do depends on the model’s functions. A microwave designed mainly for reheating won’t automatically suit the same recipes as an oven, hob or multicooker.

Make a note of a few meals you often prepare, then work out whether they need an oven, frying pan, saucepan or cooking pot.

  • Relying only on the capacity in litres or the word ‘compact’

Internal capacity tells you neither the appliance’s external dimensions nor the size of dishes it can hold. For example, Whirlpool lists the MAX49MB as having a capacity of 13 L, while its external dimensions are 39.2 × 36 × 35.3 cm.

Mark out the external dimensions on your worktop and check the installation requirements in the manual for the model you’re considering.

  • Forgetting about cookware when buying an induction hob

According to Tefal, not all saucepans and frying pans are suitable for induction. The base must attract a magnet, be flat and match the cooking zone.

Check your cookware before choosing a hob, and read the manufacturer’s guidance.

You’ll need to replace any incompatible cookware if you want to use it on this hob.

  • Putting the manual and recall information to one side

Model-specific instructions matter when it comes to installation and use. The DGCCRF highlights risks associated with electrical equipment, including electric shock, fire and burns.

Read the manual, keep the exact model reference and check RappelConso for any recalls.

A guide to the brands

Whirlpool

A brand to consider for freestanding microwaves, particularly models with extra functions.

  • Whirlpool lists a 13 L capacity, 700 W microwave power, a grill, and Crisp and steam functions for the MAX49MB.
  • These features apply to the MAX49MB. Whirlpool says to keep the vents clear and not to place anything on top of a microwave.

Moulinex

A brand to consider for mini ovens if the meals you have in mind need oven or grill cooking.

  • Moulinex describes the OV185101 as an 18 L, 1,500 W mini oven with conventional heating. It fits round dishes up to 28 cm or oval dishes up to 33 cm.
  • The size of the dishes it can hold doesn’t confirm that it will fit in your space: check the external dimensions and the manual for the model you buy.

Tefal

Two types of appliance to distinguish between: a portable induction hob for cooking with cookware, and a multicooker for preparing meals in a cooking pot.

  • Tefal lists a height of 45 mm and power of 2,100 W for its single-zone Everyday Slim hob.
  • Induction requires compatible cookware. Tefal also lists a 6 L cooking pot for the Fast & Delicious CY505E10 multicooker, so compare its capacity with your portions and storage space.

Frequently asked questions

Is a microwave enough for everyday cooking in a studio flat?

Not for every meal: choose one first if you mainly reheat and defrost food. Functions vary by model; for example, Whirlpool lists a grill, steam and Crisp functions for the MAX49MB. If your recipes regularly need oven, frying pan or saucepan cooking, consider a mini oven, hob or multicooker too.

What should I measure before buying an appliance for a studio flat?

Measure the available width, depth and height, remembering to allow for a door or lid to open, then compare these measurements with the appliance’s external dimensions. Check the manual for installation requirements too: Whirlpool specifies that a microwave’s vents must be kept clear and that nothing should be placed on top.

Can I use my existing saucepans with a portable induction hob?

Yes, if they’re suitable for induction. Tefal says they should have a flat base that attracts a magnet and be suitable for the cooking zone. Check your cookware before choosing a hob.

Is a large-capacity multicooker suitable for one person?

It depends on the portions you prepare and the space available. Tefal lists a 6 L cooking pot for the Fast & Delicious CY505E10 and describes it as suitable for 4 to 6 people. Compare this capacity with your usual meals and the space where you’ll store the appliance.

How can I check whether an appliance has been recalled in France?

Keep the exact model reference and search for it on RappelConso, the public service that lists recalls of dangerous or defective products. Also read the manual and follow the instructions specific to your appliance.
