Who is this guide for?

People in charge of group meals

If you’ll be cooking several times during your trip, the number of cubes alone won’t tell you how many meals you can make. Compare it with the recommended amount and the volume of each dish. Carrefour and Auchan both list a 64-cube Maggi Kub Or pack weighing 256 g.

Campers keeping an eye on salt

If other ingredients on the menu are already salty, compare the “salt” value and check the exact variant before adding seasoning. Maggi and Knorr offer, respectively, a reduced-salt option and a salt-free range; these features don’t apply to every product in their ranges.

Organisers checking ingredients

Before buying ingredients for a shared meal, ask about everyone’s dietary requirements. Carrefour’s information for Maggi Kub Or Bio and Auchan’s for a beef stock cube list wheat, celery or soya, depending on the recipe. Check the chosen pack for any ‘may contain’ warnings too.

What should you look for?

When you’re planning a camping trip, start with the meals and quantities you’ll need to prepare, then check that the recipe suits everyone who’ll be sharing them.

Criteria What to check Who it matters to
Quantity for the trip Count the cubes and check the recommended amount for each volume of water. For the 64-cube Maggi Kub Or listed by Auchan, two cubes per 0.5 L would theoretically make 16 L. When I’m planning several meals for the group, I want to take enough stock without bringing lots of small packs. Around 42% of consumers prioritise having enough for the whole trip.
Managing salt Compare the “salt” value on the labels of the variants you’re considering, and take the rest of the dish into account before adding any more. If the menu already includes salty ingredients, I’d rather be able to adjust the seasoning. This is the top priority for around 33% of consumers.
Ingredients and menu Read the ingredients and allergen information on the pack you buy. The words “organic” or “vegetable” alone don’t tell you whether it’s suitable for everyone in the group. Before serving a shared dish, I need to know whether the stock is suitable for everyone taking part and for the recipe I’m making. This is the main priority for around 25% of consumers.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming the number of cubes tells you how much stock you can make

A large pack will only cover the meals you have planned if you follow the recommended amount for that recipe. The 64-cube Maggi Kub Or listed by Auchan calls for two cubes per 0.5 L of water.

Estimate the quantities you’ll need for your meals, then work out how much to take using the instructions on the pack you plan to bring.

  • Assuming organic or vegetable stock suits everyone

Carrefour’s Maggi Kub Or Bio lists wheat and celery, among other ingredients. Auchan lists soya in its lean beef stock cube. Ingredients and ‘may contain’ warnings vary from product to product.

Ask about dietary requirements before you buy, and keep the packaging with you during your trip so you can check the ingredients.

  • Adding salt without considering the stock cube

The cube already adds seasoning. Anses recommends checking labels and limiting added salt.

Follow the instructions for the product you’ve chosen, taste the dish once the cube has dissolved, then adjust the seasoning if needed.

Brands to know when comparing products

Maggi

Carrefour and Auchan list a 64-cube Kub Or pack weighing 256 g. Other Maggi products have different features, including reduced salt or an organic recipe.

  • The instructions Auchan lists for the 64-cube pack make it easy to work out how much you’ll need for your meals.
  • Don’t assume that the ingredients or instructions for one variant apply to another. Check the label of the product you buy.

Knorr

Knorr offers a range of salt-free stock cubes. Auchan also lists a separate beef-flavour product containing 15 cubes and weighing 150 g.

  • The salt-free range offers another option to consider if controlling seasoning is a priority.
  • The salt-free feature doesn’t apply to every Knorr stock cube, so check the exact product.

Carrefour

The beef stock product listed on Carrefour’s website contains 15 cubes weighing 10 g each.

  • The number of cubes and the weight of each one help you compare this pack with the meals you’ve planned.
  • If anyone in your group has dietary requirements, check the ingredients of the product you buy before using it.

Auchan

Auchan lists, among other products, a lean beef-flavour stock cube pack containing 12 cubes and weighing 120 g.

  • You can compare this pack with the number of meals you’re planning, using the instructions on the packaging.
  • The ingredients include soya. Check the other ingredients and any ‘may contain’ warnings before serving it at a group meal.

Bio Village (Marque Repère E.Leclerc)

E.Leclerc lists an 8-tablet, 80 g vegetable stock with herbs. It’s worth considering if the recipe suits your menu, rather than if you’re looking for a large pack.

  • The tablet format makes it easy to count how many portions to take.
  • The product information lists 49 g of salt per 100 g of product as sold. Compare the serving size and nutritional values with those of other products you’re considering.

Frequently asked questions

How much stock can you make with 64 cubes?

According to the instructions listed by Auchan, the 64-cube Maggi Kub Or would theoretically make 16 L of stock, using two cubes per 0.5 L of water. Use this calculation to plan your meals, but check the instructions on the pack you buy and adjust the amount for each recipe.

Do stock cubes need to go in the cool box?

For the stock cubes we checked, follow the storage instructions on the packaging: keep them in a cool, dry place and protect them from moisture. This doesn’t apply to chilled foods for your meals: the DGCCRF points out that an increase in their temperature speeds up the growth of microbes.

Is organic or vegetable stock suitable for everyone with dietary requirements?

No. The recipe name alone doesn’t tell you what’s in the product. Carrefour’s information for Kub Or Bio and Auchan’s for a beef stock cube list different ingredients or allergens, depending on the product. Read the ingredients and any ‘may contain’ warnings on the pack you buy.
