Which set-up is right for you?

Available space matters, but your choice also depends on the appliances you already own and whether you can check that they can be installed together.

Households with a very narrow utility room

Stacking can free up floor space while letting you keep two separate appliances. Before choosing this layout, check the model numbers of both appliances and the kit: similar-looking dimensions don’t prove they’re compatible.

Households replacing one appliance in a stack

Check that the new washing machine or tumble dryer is compatible with both the stacking kit and the appliance you’re keeping. Electrolux recommends checking by product number, while Bosch lists certain Series 2 models as exclusions for its WTZ27410 kit.

People with a small bathroom

As well as checking that the appliances can be stacked, have the location and electrical supply assessed. For a washing machine in a bathroom, Promotelec specifies an earth connection, 30 mA RCD protection and a position outside zone 2.

What should you check before choosing?

First, decide whether two appliances can be stacked; then compare the space, access and capacities of the other options.

Two appliances stacked

Consider this if: both appliances are front-loading and the kit is compatible with their exact model numbers, so you can keep two machines without needing space for them side by side.

Bear in mind: the tumble dryer will be raised and needs to remain accessible. Removing it may also make repairs to the washing machine more difficult.

Washer-dryer

Consider this if: there isn’t room for two appliances side by side and stacking them isn’t possible.

Bear in mind: compare the wash and dry capacities separately. UFC-Que Choisir also advises paying attention to drying performance and water consumption with these appliances.

Two appliances side by side

Consider this if: you have enough width for two machines and can’t confirm that they can be stacked, especially if you have a top-loading washing machine.

Bear in mind: this layout takes up more floor width, and you’ll still need to meet each appliance’s ventilation and access requirements.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Stack compatibility Confirm that both appliances are front-loading, and check their dimensions and exact model numbers. Make sure the kit manufacturer approves this combination, including any exclusions for particular product ranges. I want to save space without assuming that two appliances of a similar width can be stacked.
Stability Place the washing machine on the bottom, on a flat, rigid, sturdy floor, then position the tumble dryer above it using the right kit. Follow the instructions for levelling and securing the appliances. The stack needs to remain stable while the washing machine is running, particularly during the spin cycle.
Ventilation and access Check the clearance specified for each model and make sure the controls and appliances are accessible for maintenance. According to UFC-Que Choisir, a vented tumble dryer needs an opening to the outside or a duct, unlike a condenser model. I need to be able to load the raised tumble dryer and maintain both appliances without them being squeezed against the walls.
Alternative option If the appliances can’t be stacked, measure the width needed to place them side by side. For a washer-dryer, compare its wash and dry capacities, along with its full-cycle specifications. If I have a top-loading washing machine or a room that’s too narrow for two machines, I still need a layout that works for everyday use.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a kit based on width alone

Two appliances with similar widths may have different depths or belong to ranges that aren’t compatible with the kit. Bosch lists certain models as exclusions for the WTZ27410, while Electrolux recommends checking whether the E1WYHSK2 is compatible with the appliance in question.

Note down the full model numbers, depths and kit reference, then check the manufacturer’s compatibility information before buying.

  • Taking “universal” at face value

Whirlpool describes the Wpro SKS101 as suitable for standard-size 60 × 60 cm appliances. This alone doesn’t confirm that it’s suitable for an appliance of a different size or for a stack that isn’t allowed by the appliance instructions.

Compare the size of both appliances with the kit requirements and check their instructions, even if they’re from different brands.

  • Placing the tumble dryer on top before stabilising the base

UFC-Que Choisir recommends installing the washing machine on a flat, rigid, sturdy floor, with the tumble dryer above it. If the base moves, it makes the whole stack less stable.

First check that the washing machine is level and stable, then follow the instructions for stacking the appliances and fitting the kit.

  • Comparing washer-dryers on wash capacity alone

The maximum dry load may be lower: Whirlpool lists a 9 kg wash capacity and a 6 kg dry capacity for the FFWDB964369SBSVFR. So a full wash load may not be dryable in one go.

Compare both capacities and the wash-and-dry cycle details of the model you’re considering with your usual loads.

A guide to brands and their stacking kits

These examples show how compatibility requirements can vary. A kit’s product page doesn’t replace checking the exact appliances you want to pair.

Electrolux

An option for pairing two front-loading Electrolux appliances with the E1WYHSK2 kit.

  • Electrolux says this kit is suitable for its front-loading washing machines and tumble dryers with a depth of 52 to 67 cm.
  • You’ll still need to check each appliance’s compatibility by product number; the stated depth range doesn’t confirm compatibility with other brands.

Bosch

The WTZ27410 is for stacking appliances where the washing machine meets Bosch’s specified requirements.

  • Bosch specifies a washing machine depth of more than 55 cm for this kit.
  • Some Series 2 models aren’t compatible; Bosch recommends checking the appliance’s compatibility before ordering.

Samsung

The SKK-ZSD is worth considering for the specific Samsung pair listed by the brand.

  • Samsung states that the kit is compatible with the WF90F09C4SU3 washing machine and the DV90F09F4SU3 tumble dryer.
  • This pairing doesn’t mean the kit will work with other Samsung models.

Wpro / Whirlpool

The SKS101 is worth considering for two appliances that meet Whirlpool’s stated standard-size requirements.

  • Whirlpool describes it as suitable for washing machines and tumble dryers from any brand in the 60 × 60 cm format, with a Safe-in-Lock securing strap.
  • The word “universal” doesn’t remove the need to check the appliances’ actual sizes and instructions.

Frequently asked questions

Can you put a tumble dryer on top of a top-loading washing machine?

Not in the type of stack described here: UFC-Que Choisir specifies that both appliances must be front-loading. If you have a top-loading washing machine, consider placing the appliances side by side if you have enough width, or choose a washer-dryer if you need to use just one floor space.

Can you stack appliances from different brands?

You’ll need to check for the exact models and kit. Whirlpool recommends asking the retailer whether the combination is possible. Its Wpro SKS101 kit is described as suitable for appliances from any brand in the standard 60 × 60 cm format, but you should still check both appliances’ instructions.

How much clearance should you leave around a stack?

Check the instructions for both appliances rather than relying on a single clearance measurement. UFC-Que Choisir recommends taking room ventilation into account and explains that a vented tumble dryer needs an opening to the outside or a duct.

What should you check when installing appliances in a bathroom?

Have the location and electrical supply checked before planning the stack. For a washing machine in a bathroom, Promotelec specifies an earth connection, 30 mA RCD protection and a position outside zone 2. You’ll also need to check the appliance instructions and confirm that the appliances are mechanically compatible.

Will a washer-dryer replace a stack without changing the load sizes you can wash and dry?

Not necessarily: check its wash and dry capacities separately. For example, Whirlpool lists capacities of 9 kg and 6 kg for the FFWDB964369SBSVFR. UFC-Que Choisir also recommends considering drying performance and water consumption before choosing one of these appliances.
