Who are these solutions for?

If you have very limited width

If an alcove or walkway makes it impossible to install a standard front-loading machine, you could consider a top-loading washing machine. Some Whirlpool models are 40 cm wide, but you’ll need enough space to open the lid fully.

If you don’t have room for a clothes airer

If you need to dry laundry regularly without blocking a walkway, your options are a washer-dryer or two stacked appliances. The former takes up just one footprint; the latter needs enough height and confirmed compatibility.

If you can make use of the room’s height

A stacked set lets you keep a separate washing machine and tumble dryer. Before choosing your appliances, check their exact model numbers, the stacking kit designed to join them and the installation requirements in their manuals.

How do the different set-ups compare?

Shallow front-loader

Consider this if: there’s room for a front-loader, but the available depth or walkway is limited.

Keep in mind: a washing machine on its own won’t meet your drying needs without another solution.

Top-loading washing machine

Consider this if: width is limited and you can access the top of the machine.

Keep in mind: it won’t fit under a worktop that blocks the lid, or in the front-loading stacked set-up described here.

Washer-dryer

Consider this if: you need to dry clothes but don’t have room for a second appliance on the floor.

Keep in mind: you may need to reduce the wash load before drying, and a combined cycle can take a long time, as UFC-Que Choisir points out.

Two stacked appliances

Consider this if: you have enough height for a stacked set and want to keep two separate appliances.

Keep in mind: the model numbers, stacking kit and support must all be suitable for this installation; similar widths alone aren’t enough.

Once you’ve chosen a set-up, measure the space and compare capacity and cycle options with your usual laundry routine. The priorities below are for people furnishing a utility area in a small home.

Consideration What to check before you buy Who is this for?
Size Measure the overall width and depth, then allow for the clearance needed to open the door or lid and connect the appliance. In a narrow walkway, I want to use the machine without blocking access to storage. Around 33% of consumers would make the appliance’s size their top priority.
Drying with only one floor space For a washer-dryer, compare its washing and drying capacities, as well as the length of the combined cycle. Without room to hang laundry, I want to dry it without adding a second machine on the floor. This would be the top priority for around 27% of consumers.
Capacity and cycle frequency Compare your usual laundry load with the stated capacities and work out whether you’ll need to run several cycles. If I do several loads in a row, I’d rather not split each load or wait through several drying cycles. Around 20% of consumers would prioritise this approach to managing their laundry.
Energy use and noise For the same type of use, compare the energy and water consumption, cycle duration and noise levels shown on the label. Check washing and wash-and-dry figures separately. In a small living space, I want to take account of the noise and energy use of the cycles I’ll actually run. Around 20% of consumers would have this as a priority.

Mistakes to avoid before you buy

  • Choosing a stacking kit based on width alone

Similar dimensions don’t prove that appliances are compatible. Depending on the kit, Bosch specifies minimum depths or excludes certain product series; an unsuitable combination could affect stability.

Note down the full model numbers of the washing machine, tumble dryer and stacking kit, then check them against the manuals or the manufacturer’s compatibility tool.

  • Confusing washing capacity with drying capacity

A washer-dryer can dry a smaller load than it can wash, as UFC-Que Choisir highlights. You may therefore need to remove some laundry from a full wash load before drying.

If you dry clothes often, choose based on the drying capacity and check how long the combined programme takes for the stated load.

  • Looking only at the energy rating for washing

This rating alone doesn’t tell you how energy-efficient a combined cycle is. For example, Electrolux gives its EW9W1165RC a washing rating of A and a wash-and-dry rating of C.

If you use the drying function regularly, compare the wash-and-dry cycle figures for the models you’re considering.

  • Putting a top-loader under a fixed worktop

Its narrower width won’t help if a worktop or shelf stops you opening the lid and loading your laundry.

Check the available headroom and make sure the model’s lid can open fully in the space you have.

Brands and models to consider

Bosch

Worth considering for a stacked set of appliances that are compatible with a specific Bosch kit.

  • Bosch says the WTZ2741C kit is designed for a full-size washing machine with a depth of more than 55 cm, subject to compatibility.
  • Another Bosch kit excludes certain Série 2 washing machines. Sharing a brand or having similar dimensions isn’t enough to confirm that a pair is compatible.

Whirlpool

Worth considering if limited width points you towards a top-loading machine.

  • Whirlpool lists a width of 40 cm for its top-loading TWB 721 SENSE WASH FR and ZEN TDLRBX 6252BS FR/N models, with capacities of 7 kg and 6 kg respectively.
  • These dimensions don’t represent the whole range. A top-loader needs space above it for the lid to open and won’t suit the front-loading stacked set-up considered here.

Electrolux

Worth considering for a washer-dryer if both capacities and the cycle time suit your laundry loads.

  • Electrolux lists a washing capacity of 10 kg and a drying capacity of 6 kg for the EW9W1165RC.
  • The brand gives a cycle time of 9 h 40 for the full-load Eco 40-60 combined cycle. Check whether this suits your routine. These figures apply to this model only.

Haier

Worth considering if you need a washer-dryer with a smaller footprint.

  • Haier lists a washing capacity of 5 kg and a drying capacity of 2.5 kg for the HWD50-BP12307U1.
  • If your usual laundry load is more than 2.5 kg when dry, you’ll need to adjust or split the load. These capacities don’t apply to other Haier models.

Washing machines and washer-dryers on Joybuy

These models cover three of the set-ups discussed here: a washer-dryer to combine both functions, a front-loader when depth is a concern, and a top-loader when width is limited. Always compare the installation dimensions with your available space before choosing.

Frequently asked questions

How can I check whether a stacking kit is compatible with my appliances?

Check the full model numbers of both appliances against the instructions or compatibility tool provided by the kit manufacturer. For some kits, Bosch specifically advises checking the E-Nr or manual and lists exclusions for certain series. So, having two appliances from the same brand isn’t enough.

Can a washer-dryer dry the whole load it has just washed?

Not if the load exceeds its drying capacity. UFC-Que Choisir points out that this is lower than the washing capacity. Compare both figures for the model you’re considering and, if necessary, remove some of the laundry before drying.

Which energy figures should I compare if I dry laundry often?

Compare figures for the wash-and-dry cycle, rather than washing alone, using similar programmes and capacities. The label shown by the European Commission distinguishes energy classes and gives figures for consumption per 100 cycles, water use, cycle duration and noise.

What rights do I have in France if the appliance I bought isn’t as described or doesn’t work as it should?

If you’re a private individual who bought an appliance from a professional seller in France, you’re covered by the legal guarantee of conformity, as stated by the Ministry of the Economy. If the appliance doesn’t conform, contact the seller and explain the problem. This legal remedy is separate from a retailer’s returns policy for a change of mind.
