Buying priorities
Start with the actual space available, then check the capacity and installation requirements for the specific model.

What to check |
Your needs |
| Actual footprint |
Measure the width, depth, height, porthole or lid opening and the route for the hoses. Que Choisir states that a top-loader is generally 40 to 46 cm wide, while a slim front-loader remains around 60 cm wide with a depth of 33 to 45 cm. |
I want the appliance to remain practical to use once installed, not merely to fit into the recess. |
| Usable capacity |
Compare the load capacity with your washing frequency and bulky textiles. According to Que Choisir, 5 to 7 kg is generally suitable for one person or a couple; the stated load applies to cotton or Eco 40-60 and may be lower for other programmes. |
I would rather have a capacity suited to my everyday laundry than a small drum that requires extra cycles. |
| Connections and safety |
Check the water inlet, drainage to the trap, an unbent hose and the electrical supply. Near a shower or bath, the electrical zones must be checked in line with the applicable regulations. |
I need to be able to install the appliance without blocking the drainage or creating a problem in a bathroom. |
| Cabinet or stack |
For an integrated model, check the cabinet, door panel and connections against the exact model. For a stack, confirm the references of both appliances and the stacking kit; Bosch reserves some kits for standard washing machines more than 55 cm deep. |
I want to use a worktop, cabinet front or available vertical space without an unstable installation. |
Brand guide
When comparing brands, focus on the dimensions and installation requirements of the exact model rather than the brand name alone. Bosch offers stacking kits for selected compatible appliances, while Electrolux highlights the need for compliant connections and professional installation conditions. Always check the manufacturer's technical specifications before ordering.

Frequently asked questions
Is a top-loading washing machine always suitable for a small home?
No. It is mainly suitable when the available width is less than that required by a front-loader, or when there is no room to leave in front of a porthole. You must, however, keep the space above it clear; with a width of around 60 cm but limited depth, a slim front-loader may be a better fit.
Can you place a tumble dryer on any front-loading washing machine?
No. You need a suitable stacking kit and compatibility confirmed by the manufacturer. Bosch states that some of its kits are designed for a standard-sized washing machine with a depth of more than 55 cm, and exclude certain references.
Can a washing machine be installed in a bathroom cupboard?
Only after checking the applicable electrical zone. Promotelec states that, after applying the 60 cm clearance rule, a washing machine may be placed in an area classified as zone 3; if the location remains even partly within zone 2, it cannot be installed there.
Which connections should you check before ordering?
Check the water inlet, suitable electrical circuit and drainage. Bosch recommends a correctly installed, unbent drain hose connected to the trap and watertight; any plumbing, electrical or carpentry work required should be arranged before installation.
Is an integrated washing machine installed in the same way as a freestanding front-loader?
No. An integrated model is designed for a suitable cabinet or recess and may require a door panel. Check the appliance and recess dimensions, the necessary panels or hinges and the connections before choosing the model.
