Who are these designs suited to?

A narrow space

If the appliance needs to fit between two units or in a narrow utility room, a top-loader is worth measuring up. Bear in mind, though, that you’ll need enough clearance above the machine to open the lid. UFC-Que Choisir lists its narrow width as a key feature of this design.

Limited space in front of the machine

If an open door would get in the way in your kitchen or bathroom, the depth of the cabinet alone won’t help you choose between front-loaders. Make sure you also check how much room they need with the door open.

No room for a separate tumble dryer

A washer-dryer combines both functions in one appliance. Compare its washing and drying capacities separately: LG, for example, lists 11 kg and 6 kg respectively for its F164R51WRS.

What sets the different options apart?

First, measure the space with the appliance open, then check the features that matter in everyday use.

Top-loading washing machine

Consider it: when limited width narrows your options and there’s always enough clearance above the lid.

Bear in mind: a fixed worktop above the machine would prevent you from loading it from the top.

Front-loading washing machine

Consider it: if there’s enough room in front of the door; a slim model may work well where access is restricted.

Bear in mind: a shallower cabinet won’t reduce the space needed to open the door.

Washer-dryer

Consider it: if you need to dry laundry and don’t have room for a second appliance.

Bear in mind: drying capacity may be lower than washing capacity. Check both figures for the model you choose.

What matters What to check Who this matters to
Width and loading The appliance’s overall width and the clearance needed to open a top-loader’s lid. If the machine needs to fit into a narrow recess, I want to be able to access it for every wash. Around 36% of consumers reportedly consider width their main concern.
Depth and access Overall depth, the space needed to open the door and the clearance left in front of the machine. In a kitchen where people walk past the washing machine, I don’t want its door to block the way. Depth and front access reportedly come first for around 29% of consumers.
Spin cycle and maintenance Declared spin-cycle noise level and access to the filter once the appliance is installed. If the machine is near a living space, spin noise and access to the filter matter in everyday use. Around 21% of consumers reportedly put these concerns first.
Built-in drying Separate washing and drying capacities, dimensions and the combined-cycle energy label. Without room for a separate tumble dryer, I need to dry clothes in the same appliance, even if that means adjusting the load. This is reportedly the priority for around 14% of consumers.

In its French survey published in February 2026, UFC-Que Choisir noted that feedback was more mixed on spin-cycle noise and access to the filter. When comparing models, check their specifications alongside the constraints of your own space.

What should you check before installation?

  • Measuring the cabinet alone

A front-loader may fit in its space but still block access when the door is open. Conversely, a narrow top-loader can be difficult to use beneath a low shelf. LG, for example, lists a depth of 1,100 mm with the door open at 90° for its F164R51WRS. This measurement applies to that model only.

Mark the dimensions and opening clearance of the model you’re considering on a plan of the room, and don’t forget to allow for the connections.

  • Overlooking the floor and transit bolts

Bosch’s documentation calls for a firm, level surface, the appliance to be levelled and the transit bolts to be removed before use.

Follow the instructions for the model you’ve bought to adjust the feet and remove the bolts. Keep them in case you move house.

  • Confusing washing and drying capacity

A washer-dryer may not be able to dry a full load in one go. The LG F164R51WRS is rated for 11 kg when washing and 6 kg when drying.

If you want to run both functions one after the other, size your loads according to the drying capacity.

  • Choosing a bathroom location without checking it first

With water fittings nearby, the location and electrical supply are especially important.

Before ordering, ask a qualified professional to check your bathroom installation plans if you have any concerns about the location or electrical protection.

Brands to consider by design

Bosch

Worth exploring for front-loaders and their installation guidance, but don’t assume every model has the same dimensions.

  • Bosch lists dimensions of 845 × 598 × 590 mm and a capacity of 8 kg for the WUU28T18FR front-loader.
  • Check the depth and connections in the instructions for the specific model you choose.

Electrolux

A brand to explore if a narrow top-loader suits the layout of your room.

  • Electrolux lists dimensions of 890 × 400 × 600 mm and a capacity of 7 kg for the PerfectCare 700 YW7T3713DA top-loader.
  • Its narrow width doesn’t remove the need to leave enough room above the lid.

Candy

A range to explore if the depth of a front-loader is your main concern.

  • Candy offers slim washing machines, with depths of 33 to 46 cm depending on the model.
  • These range-wide dimensions don’t replace checking the full measurements and door clearance for each model.

LG

A brand to explore if having washing and drying in one appliance meets a genuine need.

  • LG lists washing and drying capacities of 11 kg and 6 kg respectively for the F164R51WRS washer-dryer.
  • Its dimensions and drying capacity apply to this model only, so check the details of the one you’re considering.

Frequently asked questions

What should I measure before choosing between a top-loader and a front-loader?

Measure the available width, height and depth, then compare them with the full dimensions of the model you’re considering. Allow for the lid to open on a top-loader, or the door to open and enough space to walk past a front-loader. Also check there’s room for the connections.

Can I install a washing machine in a bathroom?

The location and electrical supply need to be suitable for a bathroom installation. Promotelec highlights the zones that must be observed and the need for electrical protection. If you’re unsure, ask a qualified professional to check the exact position before you buy.

What should I check for connections and stability?

Compare your home’s water inlet, waste outlet and connection positions with the instructions for the model you’ve chosen. Bosch’s documentation specifies, among other things, a firm, level floor, levelling the appliance and removing the transit bolts before use.

Can a washer-dryer dry a full washing load?

Not necessarily: compare the two capacities for the specific model. For example, LG lists 11 kg for washing but 6 kg for drying on the F164R51WRS, so you’ll need to reduce a larger washed load before drying it.

What ventilation guidance should I follow for a washer-dryer?

Follow the clearance requirements, installation conditions and any ventilation instructions in the manual for the model you’ve chosen. Don’t assume that the guidance for another washing machine or washer-dryer applies to yours.
