Who are these setups for?

Households with space for just one appliance

A washer-dryer takes up just one space. If you have enough clearance, a stack of two separate appliances is also worth considering, provided you check that the appliances and stacking kit are compatible.

Households with a shallow recess

The depth of the appliance body alone won’t tell you whether it will fit. You also need to allow for protruding parts, connections and the door opening. A slim washing machine only solves the problem if you have another way to dry your laundry.

Households with limited width or height

A compact model may suit an unusual space. Check its dimensions and washing capacity separately, and, if it’s a washer-dryer, check its drying capacity too.

What should you check before choosing?

Start with the space available, then check that your preferred drying solution suits your laundry loads and installation requirements.

Priority What to check Think about your needs
Space Measure the width, height and depth, allowing for protruding parts, connections and the door opening. For a stacked setup, check the model numbers of both appliances and the stacking kit. I only have space for one appliance, or a shallow recess: the whole installation needs to fit without blocking access to the door.
Drying capacity For a washer-dryer, compare its washing and drying capacities in kg for the programme you plan to use. Que Choisir Ensemble notes that the drying capacity is lower than the washing capacity. If I want to wash and dry without taking any laundry out, my load must stay within the drying capacity, not just the washing capacity.
Appliance size and type Check whether a compact model is a washing machine only or a washer-dryer. For a slim washing machine, check its full dimensions and plan where you’ll dry your laundry. A narrow or shallow appliance only helps if I can also arrange to dry my laundry at home.
Cycle times and consumption Check the duration of the cycle for your intended load. On the labels described by the European Commission, compare energy use per 100 cycles and water use per cycle for equivalent functions: washing only or washing and drying. If I need my laundry ready after a complete cycle, I’ll check the washing-and-drying figures rather than those for washing alone.
Connections and maintenance Locate the washing machine’s water inlet and drain. For a condenser tumble dryer, depending on the model, allow space for an accessible water tank or a condensate drain. In a tight space, I need to be able to install the connections and access the parts that need maintenance once the appliance is in place.

Which mistakes should you avoid?

  • Confusing washing capacity with drying capacity

A full washing load may be larger than the amount the same appliance can dry in one cycle.

For a wash-and-dry cycle, base your load size on the drying capacity of the programme you’re using.

If the load is too large, you’ll need to take some laundry out or dry it over several cycles.

  • Measuring only the appliance body

LG lists the F852SV52IRS as having a body depth of 475 mm, but it measures 530 mm including protruding parts and 1 015 mm with the door open at 90°.

Measure the recess, allowing for hoses, protruding parts and the space needed to open the door.

  • Assuming two appliances of the same width can be stacked

Matching dimensions aren’t enough: the manuals and stacking kit restrictions determine which combinations are possible. Bosch, for example, sets depth requirements and excludes certain models from use with its 00717525 kit.

Check that the exact models of the washing machine, tumble dryer and kit are compatible before planning a stacked setup.

  • Comparing labels for different cycles

Washing alone and washing and drying are different uses. The European Commission also notes that the scale shown for standalone tumble dryers changed to A–G from 1 July 2025.

Compare like-for-like cycles and loads, using the labels for the appliances you’re considering.

Which brands and models should you consider?

These models illustrate useful formats and things to check. They are not interchangeable appliances or a selection of products available on Joybuy.

Bosch

Worth considering for a washer-dryer, or for a stacked setup where compatibility still needs to be confirmed.

  • According to its product details, the WNG24402FR can wash up to 9 kg and handle 6 kg on a wash-and-dry cycle.
  • Bosch’s published restrictions for the 00717525 kit mean you shouldn’t assume that any other pair of appliances can be stacked.

LG

Worth considering if you need washing and drying in one appliance and depth is a key consideration.

  • LG lists the F852SV52IRS as having an 8,5 kg washing capacity and a 5 kg drying capacity.
  • The listed depth increases from 475 mm for the appliance body to 530 mm including protruding parts. Use the measurement that applies to your installation.

Haier

Worth considering if you need a compact appliance. Make sure you distinguish between the washer-dryer and washing-machine-only models.

  • Haier lists the HWD50-BP12307U1 as measuring 510 × 488 × 700 mm, with a 5 kg washing capacity and a 2,5 kg drying capacity.
  • The HW50-BP12307U1 is a compact washing machine with no drying function.

Candy

Worth considering if you can pair a slim washing machine with a separate drying solution.

  • Candy has a collection of “slim” washing machines with several models.
  • Check each model’s dimensions and functions: the collection name doesn’t confirm a specific depth or a drying function.

Frequently asked questions

Can a full wash load be dried automatically?

Yes, but only if the load is within the drying capacity of the programme you’ve chosen. Que Choisir Ensemble notes that washer-dryers have a lower drying capacity than washing capacity. If your load exceeds it, you’ll need to take some laundry out or dry it in more than one cycle.

Does a separate tumble dryer need an external air vent?

Not if it’s a condenser model. According to the European Commission, the water is collected in a tank or sent down the drain. Check the technology used and the manual for the model you’re considering, as well as the space needed to manage the condensate.

Can you put any tumble dryer on top of a front-loading washing machine?

No. Check the manuals to make sure the two models and the stacking kit are compatible. For its 00717525 kit, Bosch specifies, among other things, a washing machine depth of more than 55 cm and excludes certain Série 2 models. These conditions don’t apply to all stacking kits.

Which figures should you compare on energy labels?

For a washer-dryer, distinguish between washing alone and a wash-and-dry cycle. For a like-for-like comparison, check the energy rating, energy use per 100 cycles, water use per cycle and cycle duration. The European Commission states that washer-dryers have used an A–G scale since 1 March 2021, and that the A–G scale has applied to labels for standalone tumble dryers displayed in shops and online since 1 July 2025.

What maintenance access should you allow for in a small space?

Keep the maintenance parts specified in the manuals accessible, including the detergent drawer and, for a condenser tumble dryer that isn’t connected to a drain, the water collection tank. ADEME also recommends avoiding excess detergent, which can cause residue to build up in the washing machine.
