For a small kitchen, first choose a fridge that leaves enough room for ventilation, door clearance and moving around. Then check that its compartments suit your household’s shopping habits. A small, single-door model may be suitable if you need limited storage; if you regularly store frozen food, consider a compact fridge-freezer instead. An integrated model is only suitable if the housing, ventilation and door-fitting system meet the instructions for that model.
Who are the different sizes suitable for?
Someone living alone in a studio or small kitchen
If you don’t do much shopping and store very little frozen food, a small appliance can free up space. UFC-Que Choisir recommends a tabletop fridge for people living alone who cook little or have limited space. However, check that its capacity is enough for your needs.
A couple or small household that uses the freezer
If frozen food or meals prepared in advance are part of your regular shop, check the fridge and freezer capacities separately. The total capacity of a compact appliance doesn’t tell you how much space is available for each use.
Someone with a fitted kitchen and an existing housing unit
If you’re replacing an integrated appliance without changing the kitchen units, measure the inside of the housing and identify the door-fitting system. Bosch’s installation guidance and the housing dimensions published by Electrolux show why the appliance’s external dimensions alone aren’t enough to confirm it will fit.
What should you check before choosing?
Consider two separate decisions: the capacity and freezer space you need determine which size to look for, while the space available determines whether it can be freestanding or integrated.
| Consideration |
What to check |
Who it matters to |
| Size and access |
Measure the available width, height and depth, then check how much clearance remains when the door is open. Refer to the model’s instructions for ventilation clearances. |
If the door opens into the walkway, I want to be able to open it far enough to reach the drawers without blocking the kitchen. Around 33% of consumers would prioritise this access. |
| Fridge capacity |
Compare the usable capacity with your shopping habits. UFC-Que Choisir recommends 100 to 150 L for one person, then around 50 L more per additional person; adjust this to suit your household’s needs. |
When most of my shopping is fresh food, I’d rather have enough room for it than choose an appliance simply because it’s compact. Around 27% of consumers would prioritise fresh-food capacity. |
| Freezer capacity |
Check whether the appliance has a small freezer compartment or a separate freezer, then compare its capacity and layout with the amount of frozen food you keep. |
If I regularly keep frozen food or prepared meals, a small compartment for occasional use may not be enough. Around 20% of consumers would prioritise freezer capacity. |
| Fit with the housing |
For an integrated model, compare the housing’s internal dimensions, ventilation and door fittings with the instructions for the exact model. |
In a fitted kitchen, I need to be able to replace the appliance without making the unit or its door unusable. Around 20% of consumers would prioritise how well it fits into the kitchen. |
Mistakes to avoid before you buy
-
Relying on the external dimensions alone
An appliance may fit in the available space but still block the walkway when its door is open, or lack enough clearance to release heat. Beko recommends at least 5 cm at the sides and back for the freestanding appliances concerned. This doesn’t replace the instructions for the model you choose.
Also measure how far the door needs to open for you to reach the drawers, and follow the appliance’s specific ventilation guidance.
-
Confusing total capacity with freezer space
Two appliances with a similar total capacity may divide the space differently between fresh food and the freezer. A small integrated compartment may not be suitable if you regularly store frozen food.
Compare the capacity of each compartment with your usual shopping before choosing between a single-door fridge and a compact fridge-freezer.
-
Choosing an integrated model based on height alone
The housing’s width and depth, airflow and the way the appliance door connects to the kitchen unit’s door all affect whether it will fit. Bosch and Electrolux installation guides distinguish between the appliance dimensions and the dimensions required for the housing.
Note down the housing’s three internal measurements and identify the door-fitting system on your old appliance. Then compare them with the instructions for the new model.
If the appliance isn’t compatible, you may need to reconsider your choice or change the kitchen unit.

Frequently asked questions
What should I measure before buying a fridge for a small kitchen?
Measure the available width, height and depth, as well as the walkway with the door open and the clearances specified in the instructions. For an integrated model, measure the inside of the housing, check the kitchen unit’s ventilation openings and identify the door-fitting system.
What capacity should I look for if I live alone or as a couple?
UFC-Que Choisir recommends 100 to 150 L of usable capacity for one person, then around 50 L more per additional person. Use this as a starting point and adjust it to how often you shop. Check the freezer capacity separately.
Can I install an integrated fridge in any housing?
No. The housing, ventilation and door fittings must meet the requirements for the model. For the relevant integrated installations, Bosch specifies at least 200 cm² of ventilation space behind and beneath the appliance. Always check the instructions for the fridge you choose.
What should I do with my old fridge when replacing it?
Arrange for it to be taken away before your new appliance arrives. The French Ministry for Ecological Transition lists options including taking it to a collection point or recycling centre, or returning it to a retailer. Check which option is right for you.
