Who is it for?

Someone living alone or a couple who have recently moved in

In a small kitchen, you need to balance the space the appliance takes up with a capacity suited to your regular shop. As a guide, Que Choisir recommends 100 to 150 litres of usable capacity for one person, plus an additional 50 litres per person; adjust this guideline to suit your shopping habits and frozen-food needs.

Tenant with an under-counter or very low space

If height is the main constraint, check that a table-top model offers suitable capacity and a suitable freezer compartment. This format is generally intended for spaces less than 90 cm high.

Household with an existing kitchen housing unit

If you are replacing an appliance without modifying the furniture, the compatibility of the housing unit, ventilation and door system matter more than the stated capacity alone.

Buying priorities

Measure the kitchen and delivery route first, then compare the separate capacities and energy-label information for appliances that meet the same requirements.

Priority What to check Your needs
Space and door Compare the height, width and depth with the available space, delivery route and door clearance. For its freestanding fridges, Whirlpool indicates 5 cm above and 10 cm behind; the manual for your chosen model takes priority. I want an appliance that allows people to move around the kitchen and whose door does not block a wall or worktop. A reversible door can help, but this must be confirmed for each model.
Usable capacity Look at the fridge and freezer capacities separately. Also check the type of compartment if frozen food is part of your regular shop. My shopping needs to fit without buying an appliance that is too large. If I regularly freeze food, I prefer a separate compartment to a simple freezer box.
Energy use and noise Compare the kWh/year, the capacity of each compartment and the noise level in dB(A) on the energy label. The European Commission states that this label provides information including energy use, storage capacity and noise. As the appliance runs continuously, I compare models with a similar capacity. In a studio flat or open-plan kitchen, the noise level deserves particular attention.
Frost and maintenance Check the cooling system, defrosting requirements and temperature settings. A system that limits frost does not replace checking the capacity, noise level and energy use. I prefer to minimise manual defrosting if I open the freezer frequently or regularly store frozen food in it.

Mistakes to avoid before ordering

  • Choosing based on width alone

An appliance may fit between two units while being too deep, too tall or inadequately ventilated. Restricted ventilation can hinder heat dissipation and increase energy use.

Confirm the height, width and depth, ventilation clearances, delivery route and door clearance before choosing a model.

  • Confusing a freezer box, a 4-star compartment and a separate freezer

Your frozen-food needs are decisive: a compact appliance can save space but lack storage if the freezer compartment is too small.

Make a list of the frozen foods you usually buy and compare the freezer capacity separately from the fridge capacity.

  • Comparing the energy class alone

Fridges and freezers run continuously. The energy class alone does not summarise the kWh/year, capacities, noise level or suitability for your needs.

Compare the kWh/year, the litres in each compartment and the dB(A) shown on the energy label, based on comparable storage requirements.

  • Ordering an integrated model without checking the housing unit

Two appliances with a similar width may require different heights, depths, hinges or clearances. The wrong choice could prevent installation without modifying the kitchen.

Measure the housing unit, check the hinge type and read the installation instructions before buying; do not assume that a freestanding model can replace an integrated one, or vice versa.

According to Whirlpool France, an integrated model is generally more expensive and may require professional installation depending on the configuration.

Brand guide for small spaces

Beko

Worth considering for a narrow single-door fridge when width is the limiting factor.

  • For the SSA25421, Beko states a width of 54 cm, a 4-star compartment and a reversible door.
  • These specifications apply to this particular model: check the capacity, energy use and clearances for the version you choose.

Bosch

There are options for comparing a freestanding fridge freezer with a separate freezer and an integrated fridge freezer of a similar width.

  • The Bosch product sheets consulted specify, among other things, a 186 × 60 × 66 cm freestanding model with 216 l of fridge capacity and 89 l of freezer capacity, as well as integrated models measuring 177.2 cm high and 54.1 or 55.8 cm wide.
  • Features vary between models: do not assume that a feature such as No Frost applies to the entire range.

Liebherr

An option to consider if you need a freestanding fridge freezer that is shorter than a standard model while width remains limited.

  • The CTele 2131 measures 124.1 × 55 × 63 cm, offers 196 l of capacity and has a noise level of 37 dB; Liebherr also states that it has a reversible door hinge.
  • A total capacity of 196 l will not suit every household. The brand presents SmartFrost as reducing frost formation.

Frequently asked questions

What measurements should you take before ordering a fridge for a small kitchen?

Measure the height, width and depth of the space, then check the delivery route, door opening and the clearances required by the manufacturer. For Whirlpool freestanding models, the manufacturer's guidance is 5 cm above and 10 cm behind; for an integrated model, follow the specifications for the model and housing unit.

Is a table-top model sufficient after moving house?

Yes, if your storage needs are limited and the freezer compartment genuinely matches your habits. This format is suitable for small spaces and is often less than 90 cm high, but a simple freezer box may not be sufficient if you regularly eat frozen food.

How should you compare the energy use of two appliances?

Read the energy label: it shows the class from A to G, kWh/year, fridge and freezer capacities, as well as noise levels. Compare kWh/year only after checking that the capacities and appliance types meet the same requirements.

Is the door always reversible?

No. Some models allow this, but the option and fitting method depend on the model. Bosch recommends consulting the installation instructions for the relevant model before planning to reverse the door.

Should you arrange collection of your old fridge in France?

Check the seller's written terms before ordering. The DGCCRF reminds retailers that they must take back used equipment free of charge, including without a purchase; confirm the practical arrangements for collection with your chosen seller.
