Which style is right for you?

You’re replacing an appliance in an existing recess

The unit, worktop and sometimes the door panel are already in place. Before choosing programmes, compare the recess measurements and door fitting with the installation diagram for the model you’re considering, as recommended by Bosch Home Appliances.

You’re short on space

A 45 cm appliance can free up space compared with a 60 cm model, but its capacity needs to suit the dishes you use every day. Check the height and depth of the space too: width alone won’t determine which model is right for you.

You want the controls to remain visible

A semi-integrated model has an accessible control panel at the front while still fitting into your kitchen units. Bosch Home Appliances describes this design; you’ll still need to check that the door panel you plan to use is compatible with your chosen model.

What sets these styles apart?

In a small fitted kitchen, start with the space available. The other factors will help you choose between appliances that can actually fit there.

FactorWhat to checkWho is this for?
Recess and door panel Measure the usable width, height and depth; compare the door panel and hinges with the model’s installation diagram. I’m replacing an appliance without refitting the units, so the door and recess need to be a proper fit. Around 40% of shoppers put compatibility first.
Integration and controls Choose between a visible control panel and a seamless door front, then check the fitting requirements for the panel. I want to see the settings with the door closed, without giving up an appliance that fits into the units. Access to the controls and the look of the door are the top priorities for around 30% of shoppers.
Capacity Compare the place settings and basket layout with the dishes and utensils you use regularly. Space is limited, but my large plates and utensils still need to fit. For around 20% of shoppers, capacity is the priority when choosing a slimline model.
Water and energy Compare the kWh per 100 cycles and litres per cycle shown on the label, using the Eco programme figures. Once I’ve found a size and capacity that work for my kitchen, I want to compare the consumption figures. This is the main concern for around 10% of shoppers.

Mistakes to avoid before buying

  • Relying on the stated width alone

A 45 cm or 60 cm appliance could still be blocked by the height beneath the worktop, the available depth, the plinth or the door swing.

Take the actual measurements and compare the recess, door panel and hinges with the installation diagram for the exact model.

  • Assuming the door panel is included

For example, Electrolux says that its semi-integrated EEM48200IX is supplied without a furniture door. Without a compatible panel, you may not be able to achieve the look you want in your kitchen.

Check what’s included, the permitted door panel dimensions and which parts are needed to fit it.

Depending on the model, you may need to budget separately for a compatible door panel or fitting kit.

  • Choosing a 45 cm model without checking how it loads

A narrower width doesn’t tell you whether the baskets will fit your dishes. Miele and Whirlpool list capacities of 9 place settings for the G 5790 SCVi SL and 10 for the WSFO3T223P respectively. Both models are 45 cm wide.

Compare the capacity and baskets with your larger dishes and how often you eat at home.

  • Comparing consumption figures on different bases

According to ADEME, energy use is shown in kWh per 100 reference cycles, while water use is shown in litres per cycle. These figures alone don’t tell you how much your household will use.

Once you’ve checked that the appliance fits the space, compare models using the same Eco programme figures.

Brands to consider by style

Bosch

Bosch Home Appliances’ range includes 45 cm and 60 cm built-in dishwashers, as well as semi-integrated models.

  • On the semi-integrated models described by the brand, the controls remain visible at the front.
  • Having a recess and door panel isn’t enough: their dimensions and the door fitting need to match the exact model.

Electrolux

The EEM48200IX is an example of a 60 cm semi-integrated model for anyone who wants to keep the control panel visible.

  • Electrolux lists a capacity of 14 place settings for this model.
  • The EEM48200IX is supplied without a furniture door and isn’t specified for raised installation. These limitations apply to this model, not the whole brand.

Whirlpool

The WSFO3T223P is an example of a slimline freestanding model to consider if a built-in door panel isn’t right for your kitchen.

  • Whirlpool lists this model as 45 cm wide, with a capacity of 10 place settings.
  • At 85 cm high and 59 cm deep, it needs a suitably sized freestanding space; it won’t have the look of an appliance hidden behind a door panel.

Miele

The G 5790 SCVi SL is a 45 cm fully integrated option for a kitchen where a compatible door panel can be fitted.

  • Miele lists a capacity of 9 place settings for this model.
  • Check the recess measurements, door panel and hinge system before choosing this model for an existing unit.

A Joybuy option for your worktop

If a built-in model isn’t suitable and you have space on your worktop, this tabletop dishwasher is another option to consider. Check its full dimensions and water supply requirements before choosing it.

White AIRMSEN tabletop dishwasher with built-in 5 L tank

AIRMSEN tabletop dishwasher, 5 L tank, white

Worth considering for smaller loads when a built-in installation isn’t possible: it has a stated capacity of 4 place settings and is 37 cm wide. The product features a built-in 5 L tank and 9 programmes. Check the depth and height needed on your worktop; a direct tap connection may require an adapter.

Frequently asked questions

What should I measure before buying a built-in dishwasher?

Measure the usable width, height and depth of the recess, then check for any restrictions caused by the plinth and door panel. Compare these measurements and the hinge type with the instructions for the exact model. Bosch Home Appliances advises checking the recess dimensions before buying.

What difference does a semi-integrated control panel make day to day?

The controls remain visible at the front when the door is closed, as Bosch Home Appliances notes for its semi-integrated models. The panel is therefore on show, while a fully integrated model has a seamless front. In either case, check the door panel requirements for your chosen model.

How do I compare water and energy use between two models?

Compare the figures on their labels on a like-for-like basis: according to ADEME, energy is expressed in kWh per 100 reference cycles and water in litres per cycle. The figures shown for the Eco programme don’t guarantee the actual consumption in your household.

When should I ask someone to check whether installation is possible?

Start by checking the instructions and installation diagram for the model. If you’re still unsure about the recess dimensions, door panel fitting, hinges or existing connections, ask an installer or kitchen fitter to check the set-up before you buy.
