Priorities before buying
Start with the meals you prepare most often, then check the actual space available and the operating conditions for your chosen model.

What to check |
Your needs |
| Cooking method |
List the methods you genuinely need: saucepan, frying pan, oven cooking, reheating, grilling or one-pot cooking. Check the modes advertised for the specific model. |
I want the appliance to cover my usual meals, not simply offer a large number of programmes. A hob is used with cookware placed on top; a mini oven is used for oven-baked dishes. |
| Size |
Measure the appliance’s width, depth and height, then add the ventilation clearances specified in the instructions. Do not confuse internal capacity with the amount of worktop space it occupies. |
I need to be able to place, move or store the appliance without alterations or a built-in housing unit. |
| Connection and heat |
Check the rated power consumption, power supply type and installation instructions. For a heating appliance, check the surface, ventilation and circuit being used. |
I want to use the appliance without assuming that a socket, extension lead or surface in the property is automatically suitable. |
| Usable capacity |
Check the filling levels, number of portions and shape of the pot or dish. The stated capacity does not always correspond to the amount you can actually prepare. |
I sometimes prepare several portions, but I do not want to choose a pot that is too large for a restricted worktop. |

Frequently asked questions
Can a countertop appliance replace all the missing cooking equipment?
No. A portable hob is mainly for saucepans and frying pans, a mini oven is for oven cooking, a microwave with grill is for reheating and browning, and a multi-cooker is for one-pot dishes. Choose according to the meals you prepare most often rather than the number of programmes advertised.
Can I install a mini oven on any cupboard or on top of another hob?
No. The manual for a Proline countertop oven requires a clean, level, heat-resistant surface and sufficient ventilation, and advises against installing it near or on top of a heat source. Follow the clearances specified in the instructions for your chosen model.
Does an electrical safety report for the property guarantee that any cooking appliance can be connected?
No. The condition of a rental property’s electrical installation relates to minimum safety requirements for the installations concerned; it does not, by itself, confirm that a specific appliance is suitable for a specific socket or circuit. Check the appliance’s power requirements and operating instructions.
Which cookware do I need with a portable induction hob?
Choose induction-compatible saucepans and frying pans, and check that the hob detects them. Automatic cookware detection does not make pans with a non-magnetic base compatible.
How can I compare the energy consumption of cooking appliances?
Compare the model’s specifications with your actual usage, without directly transferring figures from another category. ADEME publishes separate annual averages for an electric hob, a 63 L electric oven and a microwave in France, based on different usage assumptions.
