Who is this choice for?

People who use their appliance every day

If your kettle, coffee maker, toaster or food processor is part of your daily routine, the repair time matters just as much as being able to get back the features you use.

People who want to keep their appliances for longer

You want to consider repair before replacing your appliance, then check the maintenance requirements, parts and service available if you decide to buy new.

People open to second-hand or refurbished appliances

You’re considering a second-hand appliance if you can check its condition, identify the seller and understand the protections that come with the sale.

What to consider when deciding

When a kitchen appliance breaks down, repair, buying new and choosing second-hand each come with different considerations. In France, ecosystem explains that the Repair Bonus depends on factors including the appliance, the fault and whether you use a QualiRépar-accredited repairer.

Get it repaired

Worth considering: if the appliance can be back in working order within a timeframe that suits you.

Bear in mind: the fault or repair may not meet the conditions for the Repair Bonus.

Buy new

Worth considering: if you need to get specific features back quickly and a repair won’t do so in time.

Bear in mind: check the availability of parts in future and the manufacturer’s commitments for the specific model you choose.

Choose second-hand

Worth considering: if you can check the condition, features and accessories of the item on offer.

Bear in mind: protections differ depending on whether the seller is a business or a private individual, as the DGCCRF points out.

Consideration What to check Who it’s for
Repair time Check the warranty, the nature of the fault and the timeframe given by the repairer. Confirm the Repair Bonus conditions separately. When I use this appliance every day, I want to know how long I’ll have to do without it before making a decision. Around 31% of consumers prioritise this trade-off.
Features you need Identify the features you actually use, the capacity you need and any essential accessories. If my coffee maker or food processor stops working, I want to get back to my usual routine rather than simply buy a similar appliance. For around 31% of consumers, this is the main consideration.
Checkable second-hand condition Check the item’s condition and accessories, and find out who the seller is. If it’s described as refurbished, ask what tests have been carried out. Before using a second-hand appliance, I need to know about any faults and what protections come with the sale. This is the top priority for around 23% of consumers.
Maintenance and ongoing support Read the model’s manual and check the maintenance instructions, as well as whether the necessary parts are available. After a breakdown, I’d rather choose an appliance I can maintain and find suitable parts for. Around 15% of consumers prioritise this long-term support.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming the Repair Bonus covers every fault

According to ecosystem, eligibility depends on factors including the appliance category, whether it’s covered by a warranty or insurance, the cause of the fault and the repairer you choose.

Check these conditions before arranging a repair, and ask what will be fixed and how long it’s expected to take.

  • Confusing second-hand with refurbished

The DGCCRF distinguishes between an item that has simply been used before and a refurbished product, whose functions must have been tested before sale.

Ask for a description of its condition, details of any tests, a list of included accessories and confirmation of the seller’s status.

Cleaning, descaling or finding an essential accessory can delay getting the appliance back into use.

  • Overlooking a recall or damaged part

An electrical appliance that has already been sold may be subject to a recall. A damaged cable, plug, casing or heating element also calls for caution.

Check RappelConso for the model in question, and don’t use an appliance with a damaged electrical or safety component.

  • Assuming a parts commitment applies to an entire brand

SEB and Magimix make these commitments for specific products or ranges, not necessarily for every part or accessory.

Check the exact model reference, the part you’re looking for and the applicable terms before relying on this commitment.

Brands to consider by appliance

SEB / marques du Groupe SEB

Worth considering when buying new if access to technical parts and repair services is important to you.

  • SEB says it keeps technical parts available for 15 years after purchase for almost all the products concerned.
  • Check that the model and the part you may need are covered by this commitment.

Magimix

Worth considering if you’re replacing a food processor or another appliance in a range where parts availability matters.

  • Magimix says parts are available for up to 30 years for certain ranges.
  • Availability varies by range and doesn’t guarantee that every accessory or second-hand appliance will be covered.

De’Longhi

A brand to look into when replacing a coffee machine if the manual and service arrangements are important to you.

  • De’Longhi offers support sections covering coffee machines, manuals and service.
  • Check the warranty terms and parts availability for the specific model you’re interested in.

Frequently asked questions

Can a kettle or coffee machine qualify for the Repair Bonus?

Yes. Some categories of kettles and coffee machines are included in ecosystem’s rate schedule, which has applied since 1 January 2026. Whether your appliance is eligible also depends on conditions relating to its purchase, warranty, fault and repairer.

Do I need to use a specific repairer to qualify for the Bonus?

Yes. According to ecosystem, an eligible repair must be carried out by a QualiRépar-accredited repairer. Among other conditions, the appliance must belong to a household, have been bought in France, no longer be covered by a warranty or insurance, and have a fault resulting from normal use.

Is a second-hand food processor or coffee maker bought from a business covered by a legal guarantee?

Yes. In France, the legal guarantee of conformity applies to second-hand or refurbished goods sold by a business to a private individual, as the DGCCRF explains. It doesn’t apply to sales between private individuals, so check who the seller is before ordering.

Can I change my mind after buying a second-hand appliance online?

A distance purchase from a business may come with a right to cancel, including for second-hand goods, subject to the legal exceptions set out by the DGCCRF. Check the terms that apply to the sale: this isn’t a general right to return an item bought from a private individual, and it’s separate from your rights if the item is faulty.

What should I check before using a second-hand kitchen appliance?

Check the model on RappelConso and inspect the cable, plug, casing and heating elements before use. Also check that all necessary accessories are included and inspect any parts that come into contact with water or food. Don’t use an appliance with a damaged electrical or safety component.
