Who is it for?

Single person in a studio flat

A compact appliance should handle your everyday shopping without becoming obtrusive in your living space. Que Choisir puts the recommended fridge capacity at around 100 to 150 L for one person and advises paying close attention to noise levels.

Tenant with a small fitted kitchen

In a restricted space, check the external dimensions, depth, door-opening direction and ventilation before ordering. The word ‘compact’ alone does not confirm that the appliance can be installed.

Small household that buys frozen food

A separate freezer compartment may be more suitable than a table-top fridge with a small integrated freezer. However, make sure that the height and depth of a fridge freezer are compatible with your kitchen.

Buying priorities

In a small kitchen, first check that the appliance can genuinely be installed. Then work out how much space you need for fresh and frozen food before comparing models based on noise and the energy label.

Priority What to check Your needs
Actual installation space Measure the height, width and depth, as well as the delivery route and door-opening clearance. Follow the clearances in the manual; Bosch specifies at least 200 cm² at the back and underneath the appliance in its installation advice. I want the appliance to fit in the kitchen without blocking the walkway or protruding unnecessarily beyond the worktop.
Fresh and frozen food capacity For one person, use 100 to 150 L of fridge space as a starting point, according to Que Choisir. Check the freezer capacity separately if frozen food is part of your regular shopping. Most of my shopping consists of fresh food, but I also want to know whether the integrated freezer will be sufficient for a few frozen items.
Noise in the living space Compare the sound emissions in dB(A) and the noise class shown on the energy label. Que Choisir suggests below 40 dB(A) as a benchmark when the fridge is close to where you sleep. The fridge will be near my bed, sofa or workspace: I want a stated figure that makes comparison easier.
Energy label Compare the A to G rating, annual consumption in kWh, storage capacities and sound emissions between appliances of a similar type and capacity. The European Commission states that this information appears on the label of refrigeration appliances. I want to compare standardised data rather than relying solely on descriptions such as ‘quiet’ or ‘energy-efficient’.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Looking only at the width

A table-top fridge can be around 58 to 60.7 cm deep, while some compact fridge freezers measure 63 to 66 cm. Depth, doors and ventilation can therefore prevent installation even when the width is suitable.

Measure the height, width, depth, delivery route and door-opening clearance. Add the clearances specified in the manual for your chosen model.

  • Confusing a small integrated freezer with a proper freezer

An integrated compartment is suitable for occasional needs, whereas the fridge freezers reviewed have separate freezer capacities of 89 to 94 L. These two configurations are not designed for the same shopping habits.

Make a list of the frozen food you usually keep and look for a separate freezer capacity before choosing a format.

  • Trusting the word ‘quiet’ without comparing dB(A)

The comparable models listed in manufacturers’ specifications range from 34 to 42 dB(A). In a studio flat, this difference can matter because the appliance runs continuously.

Compare the stated noise level and the noise class on the energy label. If the appliance is close to where you sleep, preferably choose a model below 40 dB(A) once the capacity and dimensions have been confirmed.

  • Forgetting collection of your old appliance

In France, the DGCCRF reiterates the ‘one-for-one’ take-back principle for purchased equipment. The practical arrangements can be particularly important for a bulky appliance delivered to a property with difficult access.

Before paying, check the collection arrangements offered by the seller and prepare the access details that delivery staff may need.

Brand guide

Bosch

The French range includes table-top fridges with or without a small freezer compartment, as well as 60 cm-wide freestanding fridge freezers.

  • Bosch specifications make it easy to compare the dimensions, capacities, energy rating and noise levels of specific models.
  • Features must be checked model by model: a table-top fridge and a fridge freezer are not suitable for the same freezer requirements.

Liebherr

The brand offers freestanding table-top fridges and fridge freezers, including 55 cm-wide models for kitchens where width is particularly limited.

  • The examples cited include table-top fridges from 111 to 141 L, rated between 34 and 37 dB, as well as a 55 cm-wide fridge freezer.
  • The height and depth of a fridge freezer still need to be compared with the available space, even when it is narrower than a standard model.

Beko

Beko’s French guide distinguishes between table-top, single-door and double-door formats, with capacity recommendations based on the number of people.

  • According to the brand’s guide, 100 to 150 L of fridge space and around 40 L of freezer space provide a useful benchmark for one person.
  • These are the brand’s recommendations: then compare the dimensions, capacities, noise levels and energy label of each model.

Frequently asked questions

What capacity should one person choose for a studio flat?

Use 100 to 150 L of fridge space as an initial guide for one person, according to Que Choisir and Beko. Choose a larger capacity if you do a big shop or store lots of fresh food, and check for a separate freezer capacity if you regularly buy frozen food.

Can an under-counter fridge be placed against a wall or in an alcove?

Do not assume so: check the appliance dimensions and follow its installation instructions. In its general advice, Bosch specifies an empty space of at least 200 cm² at the back and underneath the appliance for ventilation; requirements may vary by model.

What noise level should you aim for in a studio flat?

Compare the stated dB(A) levels and the noise class on the energy label. Que Choisir uses below 40 dB(A) as a benchmark among the quietest appliances; this does not guarantee that you will not notice any noise, but it helps you compare models when the fridge is close to where you sleep.

What should you do before plugging in a fridge after moving house?

First follow the model’s manual. Electrolux recommends waiting at least four hours before plugging the appliance in, while allowing air to circulate around it and keeping it away from heat sources.

Which energy label details should you compare?

Compare the A to G rating, annual consumption, storage capacities and sound emissions between appliances of a similar type and capacity. The European Commission states that the label for fridges and freezers brings together this comparable data.
