What to compare before you buy
First rule out models that can’t be installed in the space you have, then check whether their split between fresh and frozen food suits your shopping habits. The percentages below show the approximate proportion of shoppers associated with each priority in these choice scenarios.
| Concern |
What to check |
Who it matters most to |
| Size and installation |
Measure the height, width and depth, then check the door opening and ventilation clearances specified in the manual. |
I want to be sure the appliance will fit in my kitchen and that I can still open the door once it’s in place. Around 28 % of shoppers prioritise installation above all else. |
| Space for frozen food |
Compare the listed freezer capacity separately and check that the compartment can fit the packaging you usually buy. |
If I stock up on frozen food between shops, I first look at the space actually set aside for freezing. Around 22 % of shoppers put this capacity first. |
| Fresh-food capacity and storage |
Check the fresh-food capacity separately, along with the layout of the shelves, drawers and door balconies for your containers. |
To store several days’ worth of fresh food without overfilling the appliance, the interior layout matters just as much as the stated capacity. This is a priority for around 22 % of shoppers. |
| Energy consumption |
Compare the kWh/year figures for models that meet similar storage needs and check the energy label alongside the fresh and frozen capacities. |
I’m looking for enough capacity for my shopping without choosing an appliance that’s bigger than I need. Around 17 % of shoppers make energy consumption their top priority. |
| Noise in the living area |
Compare the noise emissions and noise class listed for each specific model. |
If the fridge is close to where I spend time or sleep, I check its noise level after working out the capacity and location I need. Around 11 % of shoppers put quiet operation first. |

Frequently asked questions
Is total capacity enough to choose a fridge for a week or two of food shopping ?
No: compare the fresh and frozen capacities separately, then check that they suit your containers and usual shopping. UFC-Que Choisir recommends considering kitchen size, frozen-food consumption and shopping frequency; the phrase ‘less frequent food shops’ doesn’t define a universal capacity.
Can I install a freestanding model in an existing housing unit ?
Don’t assume so based on its width alone: compare the housing dimensions, door clearance and ventilation requirements in the manual. For an integrated model, check the door fixing too. The housing unit specified for the Liebherr ICBSd 5122 Plus, for example, measures 177,2–178,8 × 56–57 × 55,0 cm and uses a sliding hinge system; these dimensions apply to this model only.
How can I compare energy consumption and noise without looking at the energy class alone ?
Compare the annual kWh figures, fresh and frozen capacities, noise emissions and noise class on the European energy labels of models that meet the same storage needs. You can scan the label’s QR code to access model information in EPREL.
How should I store food after a big shop ?
Anses recommends aiming for 4 °C in the coldest part of the fridge, checking the manual to find it, and not overfilling the appliance so that air can circulate. It also advises keeping the transport time for chilled and frozen food to a minimum.
Does collection of my old fridge include installation and disconnection ?
No: in France, the DGCCRF distinguishes free take-back of an equivalent used appliance when you buy a new one from installation or disconnection services. Ask the retailer to confirm the delivery arrangements and which services are included.
