In a small flat, start by choosing between a slimline front-loader and a narrow top-loader, based on the actual dimensions of the space and the clearance needed to load your washing. Then compare the spin-cycle noise levels for the exact models, check that the machine will sit securely and look at the durability score shown for the model sold in France.
Who is this choice for?
Close to the living room or bedroom
If you’re installing your washing machine near a living area, it’s worth comparing the spin-cycle noise levels for the exact models rather than relying solely on marketing claims that a machine is quiet. Les Numériques and Que Choisir Ensemble cover noise criteria and how washing machines are measured.
A narrow or shallow space
If you’re choosing between a narrower machine and one with a shallower depth, remember to measure access routes, connections and the space needed to open the machine. Hisense and Electrolux product information describes different configurations depending on the model.
Thinking about how long it will last
If you want to compare durability, check the score shown for each model and find out how it is calculated. The French Ministry for Ecological Transition explains how this score works in France.
What to compare
Front-loading, possibly slimline
Worth considering: if there’s enough width and clearance in front of the door, but depth is your main constraint.
Bear in mind: a shallower depth doesn’t tell you how noisy the machine is or whether the drum is the right size. Les Numériques found the WF5I9043BBFS to be quiet, but judged its drum too small for the recommended load.
Top-loading, if width is the priority
Worth considering: if the space is narrow and there’s enough room above the machine to open the lid and load your washing.
Bear in mind: a narrower width doesn’t tell you how noisy or vibration-prone a machine is. Electrolux France lists the EW6T4376BZ top-loader as 400 mm wide, with a 7 kg capacity.
| Priority |
What to check |
Who it matters to |
| Spin-cycle noise |
Compare energy-label figures with each other, and look for tests of the exact model carried out using a comparable method. |
If the machine is near the living room, I mainly want to assess the spin-cycle noise using measurements I can understand. Around 28% of consumers put spin-cycle noise first. |
| Size and access |
Measure the width, height and depth, then check the route in, connections and clearance for opening the machine. |
When space is limited, I need to know whether width or depth is the real constraint, and whether I’ll be able to open the machine. Around 22% of consumers prioritise fitting the machine into the available space. |
| Vibration and stability |
Follow the instructions to remove the transit bolts, level the machine and distribute the washing evenly. |
If the machine moves during the spin cycle, I want to check how it’s installed and how the load is distributed before blaming the model. Around 22% of consumers make stability their top priority. Electrolux highlights these factors for both front-loading and top-loading washing machines. |
| Durability score |
Check the score shown for the model being sold, and don’t confuse it with the previous repairability score. |
If I’m choosing a machine that’s built to last, I want to check the score for the exact model. Around 17% of consumers prioritise how long a machine will last. In France, the Ministry for Ecological Transition says the durability score has applied to relevant washing machines since 8 April 2025. |
| Capacity and consumption |
Compare the capacity with your usual loads, and compare consumption figures on a like-for-like basis. |
To make sure the drum suits my washing, I compare its stated capacity with my usual loads and check the consumption figures. Around 11% of consumers prioritise the balance between capacity and consumption. |
Mistakes to avoid
-
Assuming a “quiet motor” means low noise during the spin cycle
A motor specification alone doesn’t tell you how noisy the machine will be in your home during a cycle. The energy label and a laboratory test may use different measurement conditions.
Compare energy-label figures with each other, then look for a test of the exact model and check how it was carried out.
-
Choosing a machine based only on its width or depth
A top-loader needs space above it; a front-loader needs clearance in front of the door. You’ll also need to allow for connections and the route to the installation space.
Measure the available space and delivery access, then check the installation clearances in the model’s instructions.
-
Confusing the repairability score with the durability score
For the washing machines covered in France, the durability score has been gradually replacing the previous repairability score since 8 April 2025. Older test reports may therefore use a different name.
The Ministry for Ecological Transition recommends checking the durability score for the model in question. It doesn’t guarantee that the machine will never break down.
Brands and models to consider
These examples relate to specific models. Their inclusion here doesn’t confirm that they’re available or suitable for your space.
Hisense
The Series 5i front-loader WF5I9043BBFS is worth considering if depth is limited.
- Les Numériques judged the WF5I9043BBFS to be very quiet in its test.
- The same test found the drum too small for the recommended load. Also check the durability score shown for the model being sold.
Electrolux
The EW6T4376BZ top-loader is worth considering if width is a key constraint.
- Electrolux France lists this model as 400 mm wide, with a 7 kg capacity.
- The manufacturer’s dimensions don’t tell you how noisy the machine will be during the spin cycle at home. Compare the acoustic information for the exact model.
LG
The front-loading F14X76BSTA is one of the models considered in the context of quiet washing machines.
- LG provides a document showing how the durability score is calculated for this exact model.
- LG France lists a capacity of 11 kg. Check that this suits your loads and fits the available space.
Candy
The MultiWash MQD 410CBL9-47 has three drums and may suit households that regularly separate several loads.
- Les Numériques describes this model as quiet.
- Les Numériques notes that it can be difficult to install; Candy France lists dimensions of 600 × 595 × 1 070 mm. Check the available height and access for installation.
Bosch
The WAN28218FF is a model cited for comparison in Les Numériques’ guide to quiet washing machines.
- This model gives you a point of comparison with a front-loader featured in a guide to washing machine noise.
- Bosch France says the WAN28218FF is no longer available, so don’t treat it as a confirmed purchase option.

Frequently asked questions
Can you directly compare decibel readings on an energy label with those from a test?
Not as if they were measured under the same conditions. The EU energy label includes airborne acoustical noise emissions during the spin cycle, while Les Numériques says it measures noise from one metre away in its laboratory. Compare energy labels with each other, and compare test results when their methods are similar.
What should you check if your washing machine moves during the spin cycle?
Follow the instructions: remove the transit bolts, check that the feet are firmly in place and the machine is level, then redistribute the washing without overloading the drum. Electrolux highlights these causes for both front-loading and top-loading washing machines.
Which score should you check for a washing machine sold in France?
Since 8 April 2025, French regulations have required the durability score to be displayed for the washing machines covered; it is gradually replacing the previous repairability score. The Ministry for Ecological Transition says the score is out of 10. Check the score for the model actually being offered: it gives you information about durability, but doesn’t guarantee how long an individual machine will last.
Who should you contact about a fault with a new washing machine bought from a business in France?
You can make a claim under the legal guarantee of conformity with the business that sold you the machine, subject to the conditions set out by law. This is separate from any commercial warranty offered by the manufacturer. The Ministry of the Economy says that installation carried out by the seller may also be covered, subject to the applicable conditions.
