Which type is right for you?

For frequent floor cleaning

In a small flat, a cordless stick vacuum is handy for quick clean-ups on floors. If it converts into a handheld, you can also use it on furniture and in awkward corners. UFC-Que Choisir particularly recommends this easy-to-manoeuvre style for smaller homes. Check the running time on the setting you plan to use.

For crumbs and small areas

If you mainly need to clean a table, sofa or specific spot, a handheld vacuum saves you from getting out a bulkier appliance. If you also want to vacuum your floors regularly, consider a combined model and check which accessories it includes.

For vacuuming floors without a battery

A compact cylinder vacuum is worth considering if you’d rather not recharge and have space to store the main unit, hose and cable. Check how much room it takes up and how easy the model is to empty.

What should you check before choosing?

Cordless stick vacuum

Choose this if: you often move between floors and furniture and want to keep one appliance close to hand.

The trade-off: the charging time and battery life on your chosen setting need to suit the length of your cleaning sessions.

Handheld vacuum

Choose this if: you mainly pick up crumbs or clean small areas and furniture.

The trade-off: its small dust container and limited running time can make it less practical for cleaning all your floors.

Compact cylinder vacuum

Choose this if: regular floor cleaning is your priority and you don’t want to rely on a battery.

The trade-off: you’ll need to get out, move and put away the cable and hose, even for a quick clean.

FeatureWhat to checkWhat I need
Battery life Compare the stated running time for each mode you’ll use, as well as the charging time. UFC-Que Choisir points out that the maximum battery life quoted for stick vacuums is generally measured at the lowest power setting. It doesn’t tell you how long the vacuum will run at full power. I want to finish my usual clean without having to stop and recharge.
Handling and storage Check the weight in handheld and stick configurations, the accessories included and how much space you’ll need for the appliance, its charging base or its hose. Between bigger cleans, I’d like to reach furniture and awkward corners, then put the vacuum away without having to move other things.
Dust container and maintenance Check the container’s capacity and how easy it is to empty, whether you can access the brush and what the filter maintenance instructions say. If it has a bagged collection station, check which bags are compatible. A quick clean shouldn’t always end with a difficult emptying job or a lengthy clean of the appliance.
Repairability For a new vacuum covered by the scheme in France, check the repairability score out of 10 for the exact model and the information available about its parts. France’s Ministry of the Economy says vacuums are among the products required to display this score. If I plan to use the appliance often, I want to compare its repair options too, without treating the score as a guarantee that it can be repaired.

What should you watch out for?

  • Assuming the maximum battery life applies at full power

According to UFC-Que Choisir, the maximum running times quoted for stick vacuums are generally measured at the lowest power setting. Its tests found that average running time at full power was around ten minutes. This setting can therefore make a big difference to how long it takes to clean all your floors.

Compare the running times for each mode and the charging time, then work out how long your usual cleaning routine takes.

  • Expecting a handheld vacuum to clean all your floors

Its compact design is well suited to small areas, but a small dust container and short battery life can mean stopping part-way through a full clean.

Check the container capacity and floor-cleaning accessories. If you regularly vacuum your whole flat, consider a stick vacuum that converts into a handheld too.

  • Forgetting about the dust container, filter and brush

These parts need regular maintenance, even if each cleaning session is short.

Before choosing, check how to remove the dust container and access the brush, then follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the filter.

  • Overlooking repairability in a quick-clean vacuum

Even for short but frequent cleans, it’s useful to know what parts are available for the exact model and what repair options there are. In France, the Ministry of the Economy says vacuums covered by the scheme must display a repairability score.

Compare the score out of 10 for the models covered and check the detailed breakdown where available. The score doesn’t guarantee that every fault can be repaired.

Frequently asked questions

Is a stated battery life of “up to 45 minutes” enough for everyday use?

Not necessarily: it may not reflect the running time on the setting you’ll need. UFC-Que Choisir says that the maximum battery life quoted for stick vacuums is generally measured at the lowest power setting. Check the running time for each mode and compare it with how long your usual clean takes.

Can a handheld vacuum replace a stick vacuum in a studio flat?

It may be enough for crumbs, furniture and small areas, but if you regularly clean all your floors, you’ll also need to check its dust container, accessories and battery life. For example, BLACK+DECKER quotes a 240 ml dust container for the WDA320J-QW and lists two running times, “up to 17 mins” and 10 minutes. Check the conditions for each.

What should you check when maintaining a cordless stick vacuum?

Check how to empty the dust container, remove debris from the brush and maintain the filter. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and refitting each part.

Should you check the repairability score of a new vacuum in France?

Yes, if the model is covered by the scheme. France’s Ministry of the Economy says vacuums are among the products required to display a repairability score out of 10. Compare the score for the exact model and its detailed breakdown, but don’t take it as a promise that every fault can be repaired.

Is a bagged cylinder vacuum a good choice if I don’t like emptying a dust container?

It’s worth considering: removing a bag means you don’t have to empty a bagless container directly. However, check which bags are compatible and available, and how much space you’ll need to store the vacuum, hose and cable.
