What should you compare before choosing?
Start by working out whether your home can accommodate a dedicated appliance, two stacked appliances or just a washer-dryer. Then compare the amount of laundry each option can actually dry and the practicalities of using it—not just how much space it takes up with the door shut.
Heat pump tumble dryer
Consider this if: you dry laundry regularly and have room for a dedicated appliance, either on its own or in a compatible stacked setup.
Bear in mind: you’ll need space for an additional appliance and to carry out the maintenance set out in its instructions.
Conventional condenser dryer
Consider this if: you want a dedicated tumble dryer without an external air-exhaust duct.
Compare: its energy consumption with that of a heat pump model; UFC-Que Choisir notes that the latter has the advantage in this respect.
Washer-dryer
Consider this if: you can only install one appliance and want to run washing and drying in sequence.
Bear in mind: the drying capacity is lower than the washing capacity, as UFC-Que Choisir points out.
Stacked washing machine and tumble dryer
Consider this if: there’s enough vertical space for two appliances, so you don’t need to set aside two separate spots on the floor.
Important: the Bosch WQG233D0FR instructions require a suitable stacking kit; check the guidance for both appliances and the kit you choose.

What to check |
Your needs |
| Space |
Measure the overall depth, the space in front of the door and access to the connections. For a stacked setup, also check the height and kit compatibility. |
I want to be able to open and load the appliance without blocking the way through the room. |
| Drying capacity |
With a washer-dryer, compare the washing and drying capacities separately. For a dedicated tumble dryer, choose a capacity that suits the loads you want to dry. |
If I run a full wash load, can I dry it all at once or will I need to take some of the laundry out? |
| Energy use and programme time |
Compare stated energy consumption on a like-for-like basis, along with the time taken by a programme suited to your load. For a washer-dryer, check the full wash-and-dry cycle. |
I dry laundry often, but I also need to know how long it will be before I can put it away. |
| Installation and humidity |
Check the instructions for placement, connections and clearances. Find out whether condensed water is collected in a tank or can be drained away. |
In a small home, I want to choose a suitable spot without assuming the appliance means I don’t need to ventilate the room. |
| Everyday maintenance |
Check how easy it is to reach the filters, condenser and water tank on the model you’re considering. Look at the programmes available for your usual loads. |
An appliance needs to fit in the room and be easy to load, empty and clean. |
Which brands and models are worth considering?
These models illustrate different setups; their features don’t necessarily apply to other models from the same brand.
Bosch
The brand offers both heat pump tumble dryers and useful installation guidance for planning a stacked setup.
- Bosch lists a capacity of 8 kg and dimensions of 842 × 598 × 613 mm for the WQA23300FR.
- For stacking, the WQG233D0FR instructions require a suitable kit. Check that the models you plan to pair are compatible.
LG
The F852SV50WRS is an example of the trade-offs involved with a washer-dryer when you only have space for one appliance.
- LG lists separate capacities of 8.5 kg for washing and 5 kg for drying.
- This means the maximum washing load can’t all be dried in one go.
Electrolux
Its stacking kits are a reminder that you need to choose a kit based on the exact appliances you plan to stack.
- Electrolux lists the STA8GW4 kit for front-loading appliances with a depth of 47 to 60 cm.
- These dimensions alone don’t guarantee compatibility: check which models the manufacturer specifies.
Beko
The DCB816W is an example of a dedicated conventional condenser dryer whose specifications are worth comparing.
- Beko lists a time of 142 minutes for the standard cotton programme at full load.
- Its G energy rating applies to this model; it doesn’t describe every Beko tumble dryer.

Frequently asked questions
Does a condenser dryer need an external air vent?
No. A condenser dryer, including a heat pump model, doesn’t need the external air-exhaust duct required by a vented model. However, you should still follow the instructions for the chosen model’s location, connections and maintenance.
Can I put a tumble dryer directly on top of my washing machine?
Only stack appliances if their manufacturers approve the setup and the specified kit is compatible. The Bosch WQG233D0FR instructions require a suitable kit; check the dimensions and model numbers of both appliances before installation too.
Can a washer-dryer dry a full washing load?
Not necessarily: UFC-Que Choisir says that washer-dryers have a lower drying capacity than washing capacity. For example, the LG F852SV50WRS is listed with a capacity of 8.5 kg for washing and 5 kg for drying. Always compare both figures for the model you’re considering.
Will a washer-dryer solve humidity problems in a studio flat?
Don’t assume this applies to every appliance and home. ADEME describes the moisture released when laundry is air-dried indoors, but this doesn’t measure emissions from a washer-dryer. Follow the chosen appliance’s instructions on installation and ventilation.
What maintenance should I check before choosing a tumble dryer?
Check how easy it is to access the filters, condenser and water tank, depending on the model’s design. The Bosch WQG233D0FR instructions explain how to maintain its filters and tank; the Beko DCB816W product details mention indicators for the filter, condenser and full tank.
