Which households is it for?

Tenants or students without a dedicated water inlet

You want to automate washing a small amount of crockery without making permanent changes to the plumbing. A model with a water tank may be suitable if drainage remains possible nearby and you are happy to fill the tank before each cycle. Daan Tech specifies these conditions for its Bob model.

One or two people with existing connections

You have a suitable water inlet, drainage and power socket, but not enough room for a floor-standing appliance. A 6-place-setting countertop compact can offer more capacity than a mini format, provided you check the basket and its actual footprint. Darty and Bosch document this type of configuration.

Small household with room for a 45 cm model

You need greater capacity and have a suitable recess or floor space. A slim 45 cm appliance can hold more place settings, but requires the space and connections of a standard dishwasher. Whirlpool France, for example, lists a capacity of 10 place settings for the WSFO3T223P.

What to check before buying

Mini format with water tank

Consider it: if no fixed water inlet is available and your daily washing-up load is limited.

Allow for: the tank removes the need for a fixed water inlet, but not for drainage or filling before cycles.

Connected countertop compact

Consider it: if your worktop and connections are already suitable, but there is no room for a floor-standing appliance.

Allow for: a stated capacity of 6 place settings does not guarantee that your larger crockery will fit.

Slim or built-in format

Consider it: if you have a recess or floor space and wash up more frequently.

Allow for: the extra capacity comes with cabinet, depth and connection requirements.

Priority What to check Your needs
Available connections Check the water inlet, the route of the drainage hose and the model's power supply separately. A tank does not eliminate the need to drain wastewater. I can do without a permanent water inlet, but I must be able to drain the water and install the appliance on a stable surface.
Capacity and footprint Compare the stated place settings, external dimensions, usable basket height and the diameter of plates accepted. Also measure the worktop or recess. My everyday crockery needs to fit without requiring several cycles, while leaving enough room in the kitchen.
Consumption and noise Compare kWh per 100 cycles, litres per Eco cycle, duration, capacity and noise level. The energy label brings this information together, according to ADEME and the European Commission. I want to assess consumption based on my actual cycles and keep noise to a minimum in a living room or studio flat.
Drying and repairability Check the model's drying options, repairability index and information about parts and after-sales service. In France, the repairability index is compulsory for dishwashers, according to the Ministry of the Economy. I want my everyday crockery to suit the drying system provided and to be able to compare repairability before choosing.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing the lack of a water inlet with the lack of drainage

A model with a water tank can avoid connecting to a water inlet, but dirty water must still reach a drain. Poorly planned positioning can make everyday use impractical.

Measure the route to the drain and consult the manual for the model you choose. For Bob, Daan Tech specifies a 1.50 m drain hose and says wastewater can be pumped upwards by up to 1.20 m.

  • Relying on the number of place settings without checking your crockery

A capacity of 4, 6 or 10 place settings does not, on its own, tell you whether large plates, frying pans or food-storage containers will fit in the basket. A model that is too small may mean running several cycles.

Measure the items you wash most often and compare them with the basket dimensions and loading limits in the manual. Treat the number of place settings as a general indication.

  • Comparing consumption without checking the programme and cycles

Energy consumption is expressed per 100 reference cycles and water consumption per cycle, generally on the Eco programme. The appliance's external size is therefore not enough to estimate how it will perform in a studio flat.

Compare kWh per 100 cycles, litres per cycle, the duration of the Eco programme, noise and capacity, then estimate the number of weekly cycles required by your household. ADEME and the European Commission explain these label indicators.

  • Overlooking the repairability index and available parts

The purchase price tells you nothing about repairability or access to spare parts. The repairability index is compulsory for dishwashers in France, according to the Ministry of the Economy.

Check the index for the exact model, the warranty and the manufacturer's information about parts and after-sales service before making your decision.

Frequently asked questions

Can a dishwasher with a water tank work without any connections?

No. The tank can remove the need for a fixed water inlet, but wastewater must still be drained. For Bob, Daan Tech specifies a 1.50 m drain hose and a pump capable of raising wastewater by up to 1.20 m, so check the actual route to the drain before buying.

How can I compare water and electricity consumption between two small dishwashers?

Compare the energy-label values for the Eco programme: kWh per 100 cycles, litres per cycle, capacity, duration and noise. ADEME and the European Commission then recommend relating these figures to the number of cycles required by your own crockery.

Can a compact countertop dishwasher be plugged into a standard socket?

Compatibility must be confirmed in the manual for the exact model and against your home's installation. The Bosch manual for the SKS62E32EU compact specifies a 220–240 V AC power supply and deals separately with the electrical, water inlet and drainage connections.

Is the repairability index compulsory for a dishwasher sold in France?

Yes. The Ministry of the Economy states that the repairability index, scored out of 10 to show how easy or difficult a product is to repair, is compulsory for dishwashers among other products. Check the score displayed for the exact model, along with information about parts and repairs.

What should I check for a built-in compact dishwasher?

Check the recess and door dimensions specified in the manual, the connections and the cabinet requirements. Electrolux France explains that installation does not include any carpentry, plumbing or electrical work that may be required; a built-in compact therefore needs a prepared kitchen.
