Who is it for?

Anyone cooking one portion at a time

Choose a compact cooking chamber for chips, vegetables, bread rolls, an individual quiche or a small piece of meat, without paying for a family-sized capacity you are unlikely to use. The stated capacity should be considered alongside the basket size and the dishes you normally use: the UFC-Que Choisir test protocol includes, for example, a quiche no larger than 16 cm.

Couples alternating between sides and main courses

Two cooking zones can be useful if you often prepare two different foods at the same time and want to coordinate when they finish cooking. Asymmetrical formats let you reserve a smaller zone for individual portions and a larger one for a bulkier piece, without being necessary for cooking just one dish.

Small homes with an open-plan kitchen

Compare the appliance’s actual worktop footprint, fan noise, cleaning requirements and usable capacity. UFC-Que Choisir lists capacity, ease of handling and maintenance among the buying criteria, and highlights noise as particularly important in a small space or open-plan kitchen.

Buying priorities

Start with the portion and dish you prepare most often, then check the size, settings and installation requirements before comparing additional features.

Priority What to check Your needs
Usable capacity Compare the capacity of each basket, internal dimensions, available height and the diameter of your dishes. For two drawers, assess each zone separately. I want one portion and my usual dish to fit without choosing an oversized family-sized appliance.
Two dishes at once Check for two independent zones, separate times and temperatures, and a synchronisation function on the exact model. I sometimes prepare a main dish and its side at the same time, without forcing them to use the same settings.
Consumption per recipe Only compare equivalent recipes and quantities. In its tests, UFC-Que Choisir recorded an average 36% reduction in electricity use for a small quiche cooked in air fryers compared with a 19 L mini oven, using the same quantity. I am looking for a small cooking chamber suited to my everyday recipes, without assuming the same result for every preparation.
Worktop space and maintenance Measure the available space, check the clearances specified in the manual and confirm which included parts are dishwasher-safe. Also look for a noise measurement for the exact model. In a small kitchen, I want to use and clean the appliance regularly without excessive inconvenience.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a large total capacity when a small basket is enough

A large total capacity does not guarantee that a dish, quiche or particular portion will fit in a basket. On two-drawer models, the capacity is often divided between zones of different sizes.

Measure the dish and portion you use most often, then check the internal dimensions in the manual. For a dual-drawer model, compare the smaller and larger baskets separately.

  • Assuming the same energy savings for every recipe

Tests by UFC-Que Choisir show differences depending on the recipe and model. Air fryers used less energy for some small preparations, but this result does not automatically apply to chicken drumsticks or every type of cooking.

Use consumption comparisons for recipes and portion sizes similar to your own. If you mainly cook gratins or large cuts, compare that preparation with your mini oven or current oven.

  • Overlooking noise

The ventilation required for convection cooking can be disruptive in an open-plan kitchen. UFC-Que Choisir found differences between models and measures noise at a distance of 50 cm in its test protocol.

Check a noise measurement or a review covering the exact reference, and take into account any other appliances that may be running at the same time.

  • Installing the appliance without reading the manual for the exact model

Clearance requirements, the installation surface, thermal warnings and cleaning instructions can vary from one reference to another.

Before buying and again before first use, read the manual. Check the clearances around and above the appliance, the recommended surface, the power cable and the instructions relating to heat.

Frequently asked questions

Is the litre capacity enough to choose an appliance for one person?

No. The volume indicates the overall capacity, but not the basket’s surface area, available height or compatibility with your dishes. Compare the internal dimensions with your usual portion and dishes; the UFC-Que Choisir protocol uses, for example, a quiche no larger than 16 cm.

Is a two-drawer air fryer useful for a couple?

Yes, if you regularly prepare two different foods at the same time and want separate settings with coordinated cooking times. For a single preparation, a second drawer mainly adds external bulk and extra cleaning: check the capacity of each drawer, not just the total.

Does an air fryer always use less energy than a mini oven or oven?

No. In UFC-Que Choisir tests, air fryers used an average of 36% less energy than a 19 L mini oven for a small quiche of the same quantity, and up to 73% less in some tests involving bread rolls. For chicken drumsticks, some models used more energy: compare a specific recipe, quantity and model.
