Who is this guide for?

If you have a very narrow space

If the space is between two units, measure its usable width before considering a top-loader. You’ll also need enough clearance to open the lid.

If depth is an issue

If there’s enough width for a front-loader but the machine could stick out into a walkway, compare its overall depth and the space needed in front to open the door.

If you’re planning to install it under a worktop

If the washing machine needs to fit beneath a kitchen worktop, check the available height and the model’s instructions on under-worktop installation. The fact that it’s front-loading isn’t enough on its own.

What should you check before buying?

Measure the space, then make sure you’ll still be able to access your washing once the machine is installed. The National Consumer Institute distinguishes between top-loading and front-loading machines.

What to consider What to check Who this matters to
Width of the space Compare the machine’s overall width with the clear space at its narrowest point. If you’re considering a top-loader, also allow for the lid to open. If my space is between two units, I first need to know whether the machine will fit. Around 44% of consumers in this situation would put width at the top of their list.
Depth and access to the front Check the model’s overall depth, any obstacles behind it and the clearance needed to open the door in front of the space. When there’s enough width for a front-loader but limited room to move around, I want enough space to open the door and take out the washing. Around 33% of consumers would prioritise depth and access.
Under-worktop installation Check the height shown in the installation diagram, whether the model is approved for under-worktop installation and which accessories it requires. Under a kitchen worktop, I want to keep the worktop while still being able to use the machine. Around 23% of consumers would make this their main requirement.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming a narrow machine takes up little space overall

A top-loader can be narrow without being shallow. For example, Electrolux lists the YW6T4613DA as 400 mm wide and 600 mm deep.

Compare the model’s height, width and depth with the space you actually have, rather than relying on its format description.

  • Choosing a top-loader for a space under a fixed worktop

Even if the machine fits into the space, the worktop may stop you opening the lid and accessing the drum.

Check how much room you’ll need to open the machine and handle the washing in its final position.

  • Assuming any front-loader can be installed under a worktop

Compatibility depends on the model. For the EW2F6812AW, Electrolux specifies a removable top and under-worktop installation with a dedicated cover plate.

Check the instructions for the model you’re considering before removing its top or placing your order.

Depending on the model, you may need a dedicated cover plate.

Brands to consider for your layout

Electrolux

Several models let you compare width, depth and under-worktop installation separately.

  • Electrolux lists dimensions of 890 × 400 × 600 mm for the top-loading YW6T4613DA and a depth of 411 mm for the slim front-loader EW6S1064NA.
  • The removable top and under-worktop installation specified for the EW2F6812AW should not be assumed to apply to other models in the range.

Candy

A slim range to consider when the depth of your space is the main constraint.

  • Candy offers slim washing machines with depths of 45 to 50 cm.
  • Check the dimensions and door clearance of your chosen model: the slim category alone doesn’t tell you how much width you’ll need.

Whirlpool

Top-loading models to consider if you have limited width.

  • Darty lists, among others, a Whirlpool top-loader that is 40 cm wide and 60 cm deep.
  • This format needs clear space above the machine, and these dimensions don’t apply to every Whirlpool model.

A front-loading washing machine to consider on Joybuy

This front-loader is worth considering if you want to reduce the depth the machine takes up. Check its overall dimensions and the clearance needed to open the door before deciding whether it will suit your kitchen.

Frequently asked questions

Will a slim washing machine always fit in a narrow kitchen?

No. A reduced depth doesn’t guarantee a narrow width. For example, Electrolux lists the EW6S1064NA as 595 mm wide and 411 mm deep. You should also check that the door can open within your layout.

Can you install any front-loading washing machine under a worktop?

No. The model’s documentation must specify that this type of installation is suitable. For the EW2F6812AW, Electrolux specifies a removable top and the addition of a dedicated cover plate. Also check the installation diagram against your kitchen units.
