People organising a group picnic
If several people will be drinking milk, a pack of individual bottles lets you open only as much as you need. Carrefour and E.Leclerc, for example, offer packs of 6 × 1 L skimmed milk.
For a summer picnic, choose the amount of skimmed milk according to what you plan to serve. A pack of 6 × 1 L lets you keep unopened bottles in reserve, while a smaller size can help reduce leftovers if only a few people will be drinking milk. Keep any opened bottle chilled and check separately for the ‘skimmed’ and ‘lactose-free’ labels if you need both. If you’re looking for a single 3 L bottle, check with your shop that this size is available before planning your purchase around it.

Both features should be listed on the product you choose. Lactel describes Matin Léger skimmed milk and Candia describes Candia+ skimmed milk as lactose-free; the pack sizes vary.
If only a few people will be drinking milk, the size of the bottle you open matters just as much as the total amount you buy. Once opened, the milk needs to be kept chilled and used within the time stated on the packaging.
For a summer picnic, first work out how much milk you’ll serve and how many bottles you’ll need to open. Then check the milk description and storage instructions.
| Criteria | What to check | Who is this for? |
|---|---|---|
| Size for serving | Compare the pack sizes, including 50 cL, 1 L or 6 × 1 L, and consider how many bottles you’ll need to open. | When serving a group, I want to share out the milk without opening the whole supply; around 33% of consumers put this serving requirement first. |
| Lactose-free | Check that both ‘lactose-free’ and ‘skimmed’ appear on the same product. | If lactose is the deciding factor for me, I look for a bottle that also matches my preference for skimmed milk. This is the top priority for around 25% of consumers. |
| ‘Skimmed’ description | Read the product description and the ‘fat’ line in the nutritional information. | When choosing between several smaller bottles, I want to make sure I don’t mistake skimmed milk for semi-skimmed; around 25% of consumers prioritise this distinction. |
| Volume and leftovers | Estimate how much you’ll need and check how long the milk keeps after opening. | For use at home after the picnic, I prefer bottles that can stay sealed if we don’t serve all the milk. Around 17% of consumers put managing the amount and leftovers first. |
A 50 cL bottle may be convenient to carry, but it isn’t necessarily skimmed milk: Auchan also offers this size as semi-skimmed milk.
Check the product description and nutritional information for the item you choose rather than relying on the size alone.
Once opened, milk needs to be kept chilled. With a pack of 6 × 1 L, keeping any bottles you don’t need sealed means you won’t have to refrigerate the whole supply after the picnic.
Open bottles as you serve the milk, and make sure you have a way to keep any opened bottles chilled.
If you can’t keep it chilled after serving, you may have to throw away any milk left in an opened bottle.
These labels describe two different features; one doesn’t mean the other.
If you’re looking for both, check that they apply to the same product and pack size.
A large amount in one container isn’t always as practical to serve as a pack of individual bottles: with separate bottles, you can open only some of them.
Check the size available at your shop or through its online grocery service. If you need a family-sized amount, also look at the packs of 6 × 1 L offered by Carrefour and E.Leclerc.
The Matin Léger skimmed range is worth considering if you’re also looking for a ‘lactose-free’ label.
Candia+ lactose-free skimmed milk is available in a 1 L bottle and a pack of 6 × 1 L.
The retailer offers its La Marque du Consommateur UHT skimmed milk in a pack of six 1 L bottles.
E.Leclerc listings show Délisse and Bio Village skimmed milk in packs of 6 × 1 L.
Auchan’s range includes several UHT skimmed milks in packs of 6 × 1 L.
This selection features a pack of skimmed milk bottles for serving several people while keeping some bottles sealed until needed. If lactose-free milk is also important to you, check the pack size and product details before buying.

This pack is a good choice if you’re serving milk to several people but don’t want to open every bottle at once.
Pack size listed: 6 × 1 L of skimmed milk. Keep any opened bottle chilled; check the label for how long to use it after opening.
You can transport an unopened bottle of UHT milk without a cool bag if the storage instructions allow it. Keep it out of the heat and check the label. Once opened, keep the milk chilled, especially if you plan to take any home after the picnic.
Follow the time limit on the bottle and keep opened milk in the fridge. The IPLC gives a general guideline of 2 to 5 days; Lactel says 3 days for Matin Léger skimmed milk, while Candia says 4 days for Candia+ skimmed milk when kept between +1 and +6 °C.
No: ‘lactose-free’ and ‘skimmed’ describe two different features. If you’re looking for both, check that they’re listed on the specific product you’re buying.
First check the pack size available from your shop or its online grocery service before planning to buy a single 3 L bottle. If you want a larger amount in separate bottles, you can also look at the packs of 6 × 1 L offered by Carrefour and E.Leclerc.
