The secret is surface preparation. It must be perfectly clean, dry, and smooth (non-porous tile, glass, mirror). Clean the surface and the suction cup with rubbing alcohol (70%) to remove any grease or limescale. Then, press very firmly from the centre outwards to expel all the air. Absolutely avoid placing it over a grout line.
Suction cups are ineffective on textured, painted, or porous surfaces because the vacuum seal needed for adhesion cannot be created. For this type of wall, a hanging shower caddy that fits over the shower column or a freestanding model are much more reliable solutions.
Choose a model with excellent water drainage. Regular cleaning, about once a week, is also essential. Removable ABS plastic models are the easiest to maintain: simply detach them and clean with hot water and a little soap or white vinegar to dissolve soap scum and limescale.
