Who is this choice for?

Housemates who combine their washing

If you wash everyday clothes, towels or bedding together, compare the capacity with the loads you’ll actually fill the drum with. ADEME says that a 7 kg washing machine is often enough and advises against running lots of cycles with only partially filled drums.

People sensitive to spin-cycle noise

If the machine is near bedrooms or a shared living area, its stated noise level matters just as much as the times agreed between housemates. It’s also worth checking that the floor is stable and the machine is level when you install it.

Renters with limited space

Measure the access route and the available space before choosing between a front-loader and a top-loader. Check the room needed to open the door and fit the hoses, as well as the location of the water supply, drain and a suitable socket.

Which factors should you compare?

In a shared home, start by working out where the machine will go, then consider the loads you’ll actually combine. Noise and spin-drying performance can then help you choose a machine that suits your laundry schedule and drying method.

Front-loading washing machine

Consider this if: there’s enough width and depth, and room for the door to open, particularly if you regularly combine loads.

Bear in mind: the 9 or 10 kg models listed by Electrolux and Bosch are around 59 to 66 cm deep, depending on the model. A larger capacity is only useful if you use it.

Top-loading washing machine

Consider this if: the width of the access route or space rules out a wider front-loader. The Whirlpool TDLR 62667 FR, for example, is 40 cm wide according to Whirlpool.

Bear in mind: this model has a 6 kg capacity and a spin-cycle noise level of 79 dB according to Whirlpool. A slim design doesn’t guarantee the capacity you need or a quiet spin cycle.

Factor What to check Who it matters to
Capacity and laundry schedule Compare the stated capacity in kg with the loads you’ll actually combine, and check the dimensions of your chosen model. If we combine bedding and towels to avoid half-loads, we need a drum that’s the right size without having to wait unnecessarily for it to fill. Around 40% of consumers prioritise organising their laundry this way.
Noise and sharing a home Check the dB level and spin-cycle noise class on the label; install the machine level on a stable floor. If the machine is near bedrooms, I want to plan spin cycles without disturbing the other people in the house. Around 40% of consumers prioritise this peace and quiet.
Spin-drying and energy use Compare the spin-drying efficiency class and, for Eco 40-60, the kWh per 100 cycles, litres per cycle and programme duration shown on the label. If I dry clothes indoors, I need to consider spin-drying performance while also knowing how long the reference programme takes. Around 20% of consumers prioritise this need and checking energy use.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing the biggest drum without planning your loads

A larger capacity won’t necessarily reduce the wait if everyone still runs small loads. ADEME says that 7 kg is often enough and recommends avoiding cycles with a partly filled drum.

Before choosing a capacity, work out which loads your housemates will realistically agree to combine.

  • Taking the word ‘quiet’ at face value

A marketing claim is no substitute for the stated noise level during the spin cycle. Poor installation can also cause disruptive vibrations.

Compare the dB level and noise class on the label. When installing the machine, follow the instructions for levelling it and removing the transit bolts.

  • Measuring the width but not the space needed to use it

A washing machine may fit into an alcove but still be difficult to connect or open if you haven’t allowed for its depth and the necessary clearance.

Measure all the dimensions and allow room for the hoses and the door to open. Check the water supply, drain and socket before ordering.

  • Planning late-night washes without agreeing it with your housemates

A spin cycle near bedrooms can disrupt shared living, even if the timing suits the person who starts it.

Agree laundry times with your housemates and take account of the rules that apply to your home and local area.

Washing machine brands to consider

These models illustrate different trade-offs between capacity, dimensions and spin-drying performance; their specifications don’t apply to every model in each brand’s range.

Electrolux

Two front-loaders to consider, depending on the space available and the size of your loads.

  • According to Electrolux, the EW6FI1410AS has a 10 kg capacity and a 1,400 rpm spin speed. The brand says its SensiCare function adjusts the programme duration, water and energy use to the weight of the load.
  • The EW6FI1410AS is 658 mm deep. The shallower EW6S1064NA measures 411 mm deep and has a 6 kg capacity and a 1,000 rpm spin speed, according to Electrolux. Check which trade-off best suits the laundry needs of your home.

Whirlpool

A slim top-loader and a higher-capacity front-loader let you compare two different space requirements.

  • Whirlpool lists the TDLR 62667 FR as 40 cm wide with a 6 kg capacity. Its W6 08 SILENCE FR front-loader has a 10 kg capacity, a 1,400 rpm spin speed and a spin-cycle noise level of 72 dB.
  • The top-loader has a spin-cycle noise level of 79 dB, according to Whirlpool, while the front-loader is 64.3 cm deep. Compare these figures with your available space and laundry schedule, rather than judging noise by the model name alone.

Bosch

A front-loader to consider if a 9 kg capacity suits your needs and you have room for it.

  • Bosch lists the WAV28K00FR as having a 9 kg capacity and a 1,400 rpm spin speed.
  • Bosch lists this model as 598 mm wide and 590 mm deep, so you’ll need to check the full available space. The name of its motor alone won’t tell you how noisy it will be in your home.

Frequently asked questions

What should I check before ordering a washing machine for a shared home?

Check the machine’s dimensions and the clearance it needs, then make sure there’s a water supply, a drain and a suitable socket. Ensure the floor is stable and, before the first cycle, follow the model’s instructions for levelling the machine and removing the transit bolts.

Is a top-loading washing machine always better for a small shared home?

No. A top-loader is mainly useful when width is limited. The Whirlpool TDLR 62667 FR is 40 cm wide, according to Whirlpool, but has a 6 kg capacity and a spin-cycle noise level of 79 dB. Check the depth, access from above and the loads you need to wash too.

How can I compare the noise and energy use of different models?

Use the energy label rather than relying on a marketing claim. According to the European Commission, it shows details including the noise emissions during the spin cycle, energy use per 100 cycles, water use per cycle and the duration of the Eco 40-60 programme. These energy and water figures relate to this reference programme, not every cycle the machine offers.

Can I always schedule a wash overnight?

It’s best to agree timings with the other people in your home and consider how the spin cycle might affect your neighbours. Check the rules that apply to your home and local area too, rather than assuming that the same times are suitable everywhere.
