Who is this choice for?

Housemates who combine their washing

You want to avoid running lots of small loads and need a capacity that suits the amount of laundry everyone can realistically wash together.

Occupants sensitive to spin noise

You share walls or a living space, sometimes with people keeping different hours. The stated noise level matters, but so do the machine’s stability and how the laundry is distributed, as Electrolux points out when discussing shaking during the spin cycle.

Households with a narrow laundry room

You’re mainly short on width. A top-loader may be worth considering, provided you also measure its depth and allow enough room to open the lid.

Which criteria should you compare?

Measure the room and work out what size loads everyone can combine before comparing the energy labels of models that will actually fit.

Large-capacity front-loader

Consider this if: occupants often combine large loads and have room for the machine and its door to open. Bosch lists a 9 kg capacity for its WAN28219FR.

Bear in mind: check the delivery route and the clearances specified in the instruction manual. Bosch says the maximum spin speed of the WAN28219FR may be reduced if the load is unbalanced.

Slim top-loader

Consider this if: width is the main constraint. Whirlpool lists its TWB721SENSEWASHFR as 40 cm wide, with a 7 kg capacity.

Bear in mind: the lid needs room to open above the machine. Its slim width doesn’t mean you can skip comparing spin noise or checking that the appliance will be stable once installed.

Criterion What to check Who is it for?
Capacity and combined loads Capacity in kg and the amount of laundry everyone can combine. ADEME says 7 kg is usually enough, but this guideline should be adapted to how the household uses the machine. If we can combine our washing, we want a suitable capacity without running lots of partly filled cycles. Around 29% of consumers put this need first.
Noise and vibrations Noise level and spin noise class, along with instructions for levelling the machine and distributing the laundry. When living areas are nearby, I want to minimise disruption during the spin cycle, including shaking caused by how the machine is installed. Around 29% of consumers put this comfort first.
Water and electricity kWh/100 cycles and litres/cycle for the Eco 40-60 programme; compare figures measured using the same programme. If we do laundry often, I want to understand the consumption associated with regular use. Around 24% of consumers prioritise water and electricity use.
Space and service life Dimensions and clearance requirements for the exact model, followed by its durability rating out of 10 and maintenance documentation. I need to fit the machine in, open it and access it for maintenance, without having to replace it prematurely. Around 18% of consumers put these considerations first.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing the largest capacity without considering your actual loads

According to ADEME, a large capacity should match your needs: a 7 kg washing machine is usually enough. In a shared home, a larger capacity may make sense if everyone really does combine large loads, but not simply because there are several occupants.

Work out how often you do laundry and how much you can combine in each cycle before comparing capacities and Eco 40-60 programme figures.

  • Relying on the stated decibel level alone

Electrolux says that a machine that isn’t level or has an unevenly distributed load may shake during the spin cycle. So the stated noise level alone won’t tell you how noisy it will be in your laundry room.

Follow the instructions to remove the transit bolts, adjust the feet on a hard, level floor and distribute the laundry evenly.

  • Measuring only the space the machine will occupy

The appliance’s dimensions won’t tell you whether the door or lid can open, or whether you’ll still be able to access it for maintenance.

Also measure access routes, clearances and the position of the connections, then check them against the chosen model’s instructions before ordering.

  • Confusing durability with a warranty

The durability rating covers criteria including repairability and reliability; it isn’t a warranty period. Any commercial warranty is separate from the legal guarantee of conformity that applies when a business sells goods to a consumer in France.

Check the model’s durability rating, its documentation and the seller’s written terms separately. France’s Ministry of the Economy points out that a commercial warranty does not replace the legal guarantee of conformity.

Brands and models to consider

Bosch

The WAN28219FR is an example of a 9 kg front-loader for combined loads, if your laundry room has space for it.

  • Bosch lists dimensions of 845 × 598 × 590 mm and a 10-year motor warranty for this model; check the warranty terms.
  • You’ll need the manual for your model to check the clearance required for the door to open. Bosch also says the maximum spin speed may be reduced if the load is unbalanced.

Whirlpool

The brand offers, among other options, a 7 kg top-loader and a 7 kg front-loader to compare when available width influences your choice.

  • Whirlpool lists the TWB721SENSEWASHFR top-loader as 40 × 90 × 60 cm, with a spin noise level of 76 dB.
  • The FFS7469WFR front-loader is listed as 59,5 × 84,5 × 57,5 cm, with a spin noise level of 79 dB. Compare the dimensions and label figures for the exact model rather than assuming these figures apply to the whole brand.

Electrolux

The PerfectCare 600 EW6T3264AK is a 6 kg top-loader listed as 40 cm wide and 60 cm deep.

  • Electrolux lists figures of 42 kWh/100 cycles and 43 litres/cycle for this model. Its product page provides access to the energy label and instruction manual.
  • Check the manual for lid clearance and installation instructions before choosing this model for a narrow space.

Frequently asked questions

What should you compare on the energy label for a shared laundry room?

Compare the capacity, kWh/100 cycles, litres/cycle, and the noise level and noise class during the spin cycle. To assess consumption, compare figures for the same reference programme, Eco 40-60, rather than looking only at the energy rating.

Should you check the durability rating of a new washing machine?

Yes. According to ADEME, washing machines sold in France have been required to display a durability rating since April 2025. The rating out of 10 covers factors including repairability and reliability, but it doesn’t replace checks on space, noise and how you’ll use the machine.

Will a low stated noise level prevent vibrations?

No. The stated noise level helps you compare models, but it doesn’t guarantee an installation free from shaking. Electrolux recommends placing the machine on a hard, level floor. Also follow the instructions to remove the transit bolts, adjust the feet and distribute the laundry evenly.

Does a narrow room mean you need a top-loader?

Not necessarily. A 40 cm-wide top-loader may solve a width constraint, but you’ll also need to allow for its depth and enough space above the lid. Check the exact model’s capacity and spin noise before making your choice, too.

What should you check for after-sales support when buying a washing machine in France?

Check the written terms for delivery, installation and repairs, and keep your proof of purchase. France’s Ministry of the Economy explains that the legal guarantee of conformity applies to goods sold by a business to a consumer. Any commercial warranty is additional and does not replace it.
