Who is this option for?

Parents of children aged 4 or over

You’re looking for semi-skimmed milk for a family meal. Manger Bouger says it’s suitable from the age of 4; for children under 3, its recommendations point to other types of milk.

Families eating lunch in different places

You want to transport or store unopened milk until mealtime. Some UHT options from Candia and Carrefour can be stored unrefrigerated before opening. The pack size and how you’ll store any leftover milk matter too.

Households looking for lower-lactose milk

You’re considering a product made with lactase, such as Lactel Matin léger. It still contains milk, and this pasteurised product must be kept chilled before opening.

What should you look for?

For a holiday lunch, start with your child’s age, then check that the pack size and storage instructions fit your plans. Expected taste and the need for lower-lactose milk are separate things to check.

Criteria What to check Who it matters to
Child’s age Check your child’s age before choosing semi-skimmed milk. Manger Bouger considers it suitable from age 4, but recommends whole milk for children under 3. When my child is still very young, I want to choose a type of milk that’s right for their age before comparing brands. This would be the top priority for around 30% of consumers.
Expected taste and ingredients Read the product description and ingredients list. ‘Mild’ doesn’t guarantee that every child will like the taste, or that the product has a particular composition. For a family lunch, I first look for plain milk my child will be happy to drink, without treating a taste claim as a certainty. Around 30% of consumers would put this need first.
Pack size and storage Check the storage instructions before opening, then choose an amount that suits the portions you’re planning and your ability to refrigerate any leftovers. If we’re having lunch away from a fridge, I want to be able to keep the milk sealed as instructed and avoid opening more than we need. Storage would be the main concern for around 20% of consumers.
Lactose and milk allergen Check the ingredients and milk allergen information: lower lactose doesn’t mean milk-free. I’m looking for lower-lactose milk, but I need to distinguish this from an allergy to milk proteins. This would be the main consideration for around 20% of consumers.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing semi-skimmed milk for a child under 3 because it seems lighter

Assumptions about taste and ease of storage don’t answer the question of age suitability. Manger Bouger says children under 3 have significant fat requirements and recommends whole milk. For children aged 1 to 3, it advises choosing growing-up milk if possible.

Check your child’s age before choosing from the semi-skimmed milk range.

  • Confusing ‘lactose-free’ with milk-free

Lactel says its pasteurised Matin léger milk contains semi-skimmed milk and lactase. A claim about lactose doesn’t make it suitable for someone with a milk protein allergy.

Read the ingredients and milk allergen information on the pack. If you have an allergy or symptoms that haven’t been assessed, seek appropriate medical advice.

  • Taking fresh milk out without a way to keep it chilled

Pasteurised Matin léger milk must be kept chilled before opening. This differs from UHT products, which manufacturers say can be stored unrefrigerated while unopened.

Before you go out, check the storage instructions for the product you’ve chosen, then make sure you have a way to keep it chilled once opened.

  • Choosing the smallest pack without thinking about portions

A small pack can reduce the amount of milk left over after lunch. However, you may not need several small packs if you can refrigerate the milk after opening.

Compare the total volume with the number of portions you’re planning, and check how long the milk can be kept once opened.

  • The Lactel Vitamine D product information lists pack sizes from 25 cl to 1 L.

  • Candia’s product information lists 1,5 % fat and 120 mg of calcium per 100 ml.
  • Once opened, Candia says to store it at a maximum of +6 °C and use it within four days. The product information can’t predict whether a child will like the taste.

Carrefour

The retailer offers, among other products, UHT Montagne semi-skimmed milk in a 50 cl bottle.

  • According to its product information, this UHT semi-skimmed milk can be stored at room temperature before opening.

These two packs of semi-skimmed milk suit different needs: 50 cl cartons if you want to open smaller amounts, or 1 L cartons for several servings. Check the product description and storage instructions against your child’s age and lunch plans. The product name alone can’t tell you whether your child will find the taste mild.

Frequently asked questions

Is semi-skimmed milk suitable for all children?

No. Manger Bouger says it’s suitable from the age of 4, while children under 3 have significant fat requirements and should drink whole milk. For children aged 1 to 3, Manger Bouger recommends growing-up milk, fortified with iron, if possible.

How should you store milk for a holiday lunch?

Choose a product whose storage instructions before opening suit your access to a fridge. The product information for Candia GrandLait and Carrefour UHT milk allows for storage unrefrigerated before opening. After opening, the recommended storage time depends on the product: Candia says GrandLait can be kept for four days at a maximum of +6 °C, Lactel says its Vitamine D product can be kept for three days at a maximum of 6 °C, and Auchan says its enriched version can be kept for 48 hours at a maximum of +6 °C.

Is ‘lactose-free’ milk suitable if you have a milk allergy?

Not necessarily. Lactel says Matin léger contains semi-skimmed milk and lactase, so it still contains the milk allergen. If you have a milk protein allergy or symptoms that haven’t been assessed, seek appropriate medical advice rather than choosing a product based only on a claim about lactose.

What should you check on the packaging before buying?

Read the product description, ingredients, nutritional information, volume and storage instructions for the product you’ve chosen. For prepacked foods, the DGCCRF notes in particular that allergenic ingredients must be highlighted. This information is more useful than a ‘mild’ taste claim when checking whether the product contains milk.
