Who is this choice for?

Hosts shopping in advance

If you’re preparing Easter lunch several days ahead, an unopened carton of UHT milk can be stored in a dry place without taking up space in the fridge. Check the treatment and storage instructions for the product you choose.

Families planning several uses

For coffee, recipes and drinks with your meal, the size of each carton matters just as much as the total quantity in the multipack. Once a container is opened, how quickly it needs to be used becomes an important consideration.

Shoppers looking for a specific claim

If you’re looking for a stated origin, an organic product or added vitamin D, check the claims on the exact product alongside its name, ingredients, allergens and storage instructions.

What should you look for before buying?

If you’re shopping ahead for lunch, first distinguish UHT milk from fresh pasteurised milk, then choose container sizes based on how much you expect to open. Check the exact product for added nutrients or any other specific claim.

What to consider What to check Who it matters to
Storage before opening The ‘UHT sterilised’ label, the date and the storage instructions. If I’m shopping several days before the meal, I want to store unopened containers without using up fridge space. Around 50% of shoppers put this at the top of their list.
Container size The number of cartons or bottles, their capacity and the stated shelf life after opening. Between recipes and drinks, I want to open an amount that suits what we’ll use. Container size is the main priority for around 30% of shoppers.
Product claims Ingredients, allergens and nutritional information; added nutrients, organic status or origin if you’re looking for these. If I’m looking for a specific feature, I want to see it on the product I buy rather than assume it from the brand. This check comes before other criteria for around 20% of shoppers.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing ‘filtered’, UHT and fresh pasteurised milk

These terms describe different things. If you’re shopping ahead, the useful criteria are the treatment and storage instructions on the pack: fresh pasteurised milk needs to stay in the fridge, while unopened UHT milk should be stored according to the instructions on its packaging.

If you specifically want filtered or microfiltered milk, look for this claim on the product itself. Don’t infer it from the packaging or from the word ‘UHT’ alone.

  • Choosing a large multipack without planning which containers to open

The long shelf life of UHT milk applies to unopened containers. Once opened, Lactel Vitamine D recommends keeping its milk refrigerated and using it within three days; Candia GrandLait gives four days, and Auchan UHT milk in an 8 × 1 L multipack gives five days, according to their respective instructions.

Work out how much you’ll need for recipes and drinks, then check the shelf life of the product you’ve bought before opening another carton.

  • Putting a specific claim ahead of how you plan to use the milk

Added vitamin D, an organic claim or a stated origin doesn’t tell you, on its own, about the size or storage requirements of the milk you’ve chosen.

Check the treatment, container size and storage instructions first, then compare the ingredients, allergens and claims that match what you’re looking for.

Frequently asked questions

How should I choose milk when shopping before Easter?

If you want to store it outside the fridge before opening, look for the ‘UHT sterilised’ label and follow the instructions on the packaging. The IPLC says unopened UHT milk can be stored at room temperature in a dry place for at least three months; fresh pasteurised milk, on the other hand, must be kept chilled.

How long does milk keep after opening?

Follow the shelf life and temperature instructions on the product you’ve bought. Lactel recommends using its Vitamine D semi-skimmed milk within three days when stored at no more than 6 °C; Candia gives four days at this temperature for GrandLait semi-skimmed milk, and Auchan gives five days for its UHT product in an 8 × 1 L multipack.

Does UHT treatment mean milk is no longer listed as an allergen?

No. On its product page for UHT sterilised semi-skimmed milk, Carrefour lists milk among the ingredients and allergens. Always check the information for the product you choose, whether it’s UHT or fortified.

What should I look for on the label of pre-packed milk in France?

Check the product name, ingredients and allergens, net quantity, nutritional information and the date that applies to the product. The DGCCRF lists these among the details required for pre-packed foods. Also read the storage instructions for before and after opening.
