Which option is right for you?

People living in a furnished studio flat

A robot can take care of some of your regular cleaning, provided it can move between your furniture and find its way back to the docking station. Measure the narrowest gaps: Xiaomi France specifies a minimum width of around 37 cm for its Robot Vacuum X20+—a figure that applies to this model only.

Households looking to handle mop pads less often

Depending on the model, a multifunction station can empty the dust and wash and dry the mop pads. However, it needs a permanent spot, and you’ll still need to maintain its tanks, tray or consumables.

People who often move their furniture

If chairs, baskets and cables regularly change the available routes, a stick or cylinder vacuum lets you target the areas that need cleaning without relying on an automated route. You’ll still need to clean and put the vacuum away yourself.

What should you check before choosing?

Start by measuring your home and where you’ll store the vacuum. Then decide which tasks you’d like to hand over and which areas will still need a manual clean.

Priority What to check Think about your needs
Space available Measure the width, depth and height of the station or vacuum. Check the model’s manual for the clearance it needs and whether it can reach a power socket. I want to keep the station accessible without blocking the way, or store the manual vacuum with its hose and accessories.
Robot’s route Measure the gaps between furniture, the clearance beneath your bed or sofa, and any thresholds. Xiaomi France specifies a minimum width of around 37 cm for the X20+ only, so check the requirements for the robot you’re considering. Do furniture legs and doorways leave a clear route to the rooms I want to clean?
Station maintenance Check whether the station empties dust, washes mop pads and dries them. Find out what maintenance is needed for the bag, filters, tanks and tray on your chosen model. I’d rather have a smaller base and do more myself, or I can make room for a larger one to hand over mop pad maintenance too.
Flooring and obstacles Compare performance on your floor types, as well as near walls and in corners. UFC-Que Choisir assesses carpets, tiles, wooden floors and room edges as separate conditions. If my rugs or cluttered corners need extra attention, I want to know which areas I’ll still need to clean by hand.
Manual cleaning For a stick vacuum, check its weight, dust container, charging and storage requirements. For a cylinder vacuum, also allow room for the main unit, hose, cable and any bags. If my layout changes often, I may prefer to guide the vacuum myself rather than prepare a route for a robot.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Judging by floor area alone

Even in a small room, a gap between two pieces of furniture can stop a robot from reaching an area. Xiaomi France warns that its X20+ can get stuck in spaces less than 37 cm wide; this limit does not automatically apply to other models.

Measure the narrowest gaps, the clearance beneath your furniture and the route back to the station before comparing features.

  • Assuming a station means no maintenance

An emptying dock and a station that washes mop pads don’t take care of the same tasks. Even with a multifunction station, you’ll still need to maintain the tanks, tray and consumables.

Check which tasks are automated on the specific model, then make sure you can access the parts that need cleaning and find the right consumables.

Depending on the model, you’ll also need to factor in replacing bags, filters or mop pads, and the time needed to deal with the tanks.

  • Relying on a single power figure to predict performance

A figure in pascals or a quoted run time alone won’t tell you how well a vacuum cleans carpets, edges and corners. UFC-Que Choisir’s testing assesses these conditions separately.

Look for results on the types of flooring in your home, and plan to clean by hand in areas the robot can’t reach.

Models to compare

These examples highlight the space and maintenance considerations of different types of vacuum. Their specifications don’t apply to every model from the same brand.

Xiaomi

Xiaomi France’s product pages let you compare an emptying dock, an all-in-one station and documented clearance requirements for another robot in the range.

  • According to Xiaomi France, the Robot Vacuum X10 station measures 397 × 285 × 384 mm, while the H50 station measures 328 × 415,5 × 507,5 mm.
  • The minimum width of around 37 cm specified by Xiaomi France applies to the X20+ only—not the X10, H50 or all robot vacuums.

Dyson

The V8 Absolute is an example of a cordless stick vacuum for cleaning areas whose access often changes.

  • Dyson France lists the V8 Absolute as weighing 2,5 kg, with a 0,54 L dust container.
  • The 40-minute run time quoted by Dyson France doesn’t indicate how long it will last in each mode or with each brush.

Miele

The Compact C1 is an example of a bagged cylinder vacuum to consider if manual cleaning and cupboard storage suit your home better.

  • A 2017 Miele France brochure lists the Compact C1’s main unit as 42,9 × 25 × 23 cm, with a 3,5 L bag.
  • These figures come from a 2017 brochure, so check the dimensions and consumables for the specific model you’re considering.

Frequently asked questions

What width should I measure before buying a robot vacuum?

Measure the narrowest points along the robot’s route, especially between furniture legs, then check the clearance required for your chosen model. Xiaomi France specifies a minimum width of around 37 cm for the Robot Vacuum X20+ and warns that it may get stuck in narrower spaces. This figure isn’t a rule for other robots.

Does a multifunction station mean I won’t need to do any maintenance?

No. Depending on its features, it may collect dust and wash or dry mop pads, but the tanks, tray, filters and consumables will still need attention. Check what maintenance the station on your chosen model requires, and make sure it’s accessible.

How should I compare vacuums if my home has carpets and lots of corners?

Look for results on the floor types and in the areas that matter in your home, rather than comparing quoted power figures alone. UFC-Que Choisir’s robot vacuum tests assess carpets, tiles, wooden floors, room edges and corners separately.

Is a cordless stick vacuum suitable if furniture and cables are often moved?

It may be easier to guide it to whichever areas are accessible at the time, without needing to keep a clear route for a robot. On the other hand, you’ll do the cleaning and empty the dust container yourself. Check its weight and how much storage space it needs too.
