Which factors should guide your decision?
First decide whether you want to delegate regular cleaning or stay in control with manual cleaning. If you’re considering a robot, then look at your home, the maintenance it will need and which functions rely on a connection. Mopping adds accessories and maintenance tasks specific to each model.
| What matters to you |
What to check |
Consumers who may relate |
| Delegating regular cleaning |
Check the scheduling options, whether it returns to its base and the conditions used to measure the stated battery life for your chosen model. |
When I’m busy, I want my floors cleaned between thorough cleans without having to start every run myself. For around 36% of consumers, this would be the top priority. |
| Maintaining the appliance over time |
Check the compatible model numbers for filters, brushes and other consumables. For new models covered by the scheme in France, compare their repairability index too. |
If I plan to use the robot regularly, I want to be able to replace the parts it needs and keep it in good working order. Around 29% of consumers would put this need first. |
| Making sure it suits your home |
Measure the clearance under furniture and check the stated limits for thresholds, rugs and obstacles in your home. |
With rugs, thresholds or low furniture, I want to know where the robot can actually go before trusting it with my floors. This would be the top priority for around 21% of consumers. |
| Keeping essential functions available |
Find out which controls are available without Wi-Fi, an account or the cloud, and what software support applies to the model. |
If I rely on the app to organise cleaning runs, I don’t want essential cleaning to depend entirely on an online service. Around 14% of consumers would put continued access to these functions first. |

Frequently asked questions
Should you check the repairability index of a new robot vacuum cleaner?
Yes. For a new model covered by the scheme and sold in France, the index is a useful point of comparison before you buy. The ADEME confirms that robot vacuum cleaners are among the appliances covered; also check compatible parts and software support separately, as these aren’t covered by the index.
Will spare parts remain available throughout the product’s useful life?
Don’t assume they will remain available for a particular model. The DGCCRF distinguishes between the obligations that apply to different product categories. Ask the retailer how long parts are expected to be available for the exact model, and make a note of compatible parts and consumables.
What warranty applies to a new robot bought from a retailer in France?
The legal guarantee of conformity applies to a new product sold by a retailer to an individual in France. According to the Ministry of the Economy, consumers have two years to invoke it when there is a lack of conformity, for example if the product doesn’t work or doesn’t match its description.
Can a connected robot still clean if its cloud service shuts down?
It depends on the controls provided for the specific model. When it made its announcement in October 2025, Neato Robotics said its robots could still be started manually despite the gradual shutdown of its cloud service. Before buying another robot, check its manual to see what you can still do without the app, an account or a server.
