Who might benefit from a robot vacuum?

A robot can take care of some of your regular vacuuming, provided its performance and features suit your home. Your needs will depend on your floor types, which rooms you want to target and how much upkeep you’re happy to do yourself.

Homes with hard floors, wooden floors and carpets

If you have different floor types, compare the model’s performance on each one, as well as along edges and in corners. UFC-Que Choisir assesses these situations separately: a result on tiles alone won’t tell you how well it cleans a carpet.

People who want to clean room by room

Mapping can help you target areas and set up routines, if the robot and its app offer these features. Check how many maps it can store, too. For example, iRobot says that the Roomba i3/i4/i5 can only use one smart map.

Homes where you want to empty the dust box less often

An auto-empty dock can save you from emptying the robot’s small dust box after every clean. However, it shifts some of the work to the dock’s container. Depending on the set-up, a mopping system also means looking after the water tanks and mop pads.

What should you check before choosing?

Start with the floors and areas that cause you the most trouble. Then decide whether room targeting, automatic emptying or mopping would genuinely make a difference to your routine.

FeatureWhat to checkConsider your needs
Vacuuming performance on different floors Compare test results for the exact model on carpets, tiles and wooden floors. Check results along walls and in corners separately: these are measured individually in UFC-Que Choisir’s testing protocol. I have several floor types, and dust also gathers near the skirting boards. A result on just one type of floor won’t tell me everything I need to know.
Navigation and mapping Decide whether basic navigation without room targeting is enough, or whether you want to select specific rooms and areas. If your home has multiple floors, check how many maps the model can store. For everyday cleaning without selecting rooms, basic navigation may be enough. If I want to focus on certain rooms, I’ll need the relevant mapping features.
Dust box and dock Check how the robot’s dust box and the dock’s container are emptied. If the dock also handles mopping, look into the upkeep of the water tanks and mop pads, as well as compatible consumables. I find it inconvenient to empty the small dust box frequently, so I could consider a dock, while bearing in mind that I’ll still need to look after its containers.
Mopping and carpets Check which floor types the manufacturer says are suitable, and how the robot handles carpets. UFC-Que Choisir tests mopping on hard floors only and advises against using it on wooden floors, particularly solid wood. I’d like to keep my tiled floors clean, but I shouldn’t assume the mop is suitable for my wooden floors or that it will always avoid the edges of carpets.
App Check that the robot is compatible with your phone, which features are available in France, the update terms and the privacy policy. Features can vary by range and firmware. If my routines or selected areas depend on an app, I want to know which features will work with the model I choose.

What mistakes should you avoid?

  • Relying on the advertised suction power alone

This figure on its own doesn’t tell you how well the robot picks up dirt from your carpets or near the skirting boards. UFC-Que Choisir assesses results separately for different floor types, edges and corners.

Look for tests of the exact model on the floor types you have at home. If tricky areas are one of the reasons you’re buying, check the results for those areas too.

  • Expecting mopping to replace manual cleaning

UFC-Que Choisir reports mixed mopping results. A dock that cleans the mop pads doesn’t, on its own, prove that the robot can tackle stubborn stains.

Consider mopping for everyday cleaning on suitable floors, and keep a manual method handy for dried-on stains or a deeper clean.

Depending on the system, you’ll also need to look after the cloths and water tanks, and allow for the cost of compatible consumables.

  • Assuming the mop lift protects every carpet

Ecovacs says that, on the models concerned, obstacles near a carpet can cause the mop pad to wet its edge. So an advertised mop lift doesn’t mean you can ignore the layout of your room.

Keep the area around carpets clear and check the recommended no-go zone settings for your chosen model.

  • Overlooking the app’s limitations

Room targeting depends on the features actually available for your robot. iRobot notes, for example, that the Roomba i3/i4/i5 are limited to one smart map, which is worth bearing in mind if your home has multiple floors.

Before you buy, check compatibility with your phone, the number of maps supported, which features are available in France, software updates and how your data will be handled.

Which brands and ranges should you consider?

These brands offer examples of features to look out for, but specifications vary from model to model and don’t replace test results for your own floors.

iRobot

Routine and room-targeting features depend on the series and compatible app.

  • According to iRobot France, the Roomba Home app lets you select rooms and set routines on the compatible series specified by the brand.
  • iRobot limits the Roomba i3/i4/i5 to one smart map. Check the features of the series on sale before relying on floor-by-floor mapping.

Ecovacs

Some DEEBOT models combine mopping and a dock with advertised carpet-handling features. Check these features for each model.

  • Ecovacs France says the DEEBOT N30 PRO OMNI has a dock that washes and dries the mop pads, as well as an automatic mop lift on carpets.
  • Ecovacs warns that an obstacle can cause the mop pad to dampen the edge of a carpet or rug.

Roborock

UFC-Que Choisir lists Roborock among the brands included in its French robot vacuum references.

  • Its models can be considered alongside other options when their features suit the way you organise your cleaning.
  • Check test results, maintenance requirements and app features for the specific model. Mopping or a dock alone won’t tell you how well it performs on each floor type.

Models for cleaning mixed flooring

These Joybuy robot vacuums combine vacuuming with mopping features or a dock. Compare their specifications with your needs for room targeting and dust box maintenance, then check test results for the exact model on your floors: advertised features aren’t a substitute for vacuuming tests.

Frequently asked questions

Can a robot vacuum always replace another vacuum cleaner?

No. Don’t assume it will handle every cleaning task. UFC-Que Choisir finds that robot vacuum performance varies by floor type, and its testing protocol also measures edges and corners separately. Choose one for everyday cleaning if its results suit your floors, and plan to use another method for areas or tasks it can’t handle properly.

Why compare carpets, wooden floors and corners separately?

Because a result on one type of floor doesn’t prove it will perform just as well elsewhere. UFC-Que Choisir tests vacuuming on carpets, tiles and wooden floors, then separately around the edges of rooms and in corners. Focus on the results that match the floor types and tricky areas in your home.

Does an auto-empty dock mean you no longer need to do any maintenance?

No. It can transfer dust from the robot’s dust box to a larger container, but you’ll still need to empty or replace it, depending on the system. If the dock also handles mopping, check how to maintain the water tanks and mop pads.

Can you use the mopping function on wooden floors and near carpets?

First, check the guidance for your floor type and chosen model. UFC-Que Choisir’s mopping protocol covers hard floors only and advises against using it on wooden floors, particularly solid wood. Ecovacs also warns that a carpet edge can get wet despite the mop pad lifting if obstacles get in the way.

What should you check before relying on the app?

Check that the app is compatible with your phone and exact robot model, then confirm which features are available in France, how many maps it supports, the update terms and the privacy policy. A feature advertised for one range won’t necessarily be available across every series: iRobot, for example, limits the Roomba i3/i4/i5 to one smart map.
