Who is it right for?

Households that want to schedule cleaning

If you can clear the floors before the robot starts, room-by-room scheduling and no-go zones can make regular cleaning easier to organise. Check that these features are available on the model you’re considering and in its app.

Homes with rugs, thresholds or objects on the floor

Check how easily the robot can get around first: measure your thresholds, note where rugs and cables are, then compare these obstacles with the specifications for the exact model. If it can mop, also check how it protects rugs.

Households with pets or long hair

You may appreciate frequent cleaning, as long as you’re prepared to clean the brushes. For the Roomba models concerned, iRobot recommends cleaning the brushes twice a week in homes with pets. Follow the care instructions for the robot you choose.

What should you look for?

First, check where the robot can actually go, then choose the features that will cut down on the jobs you’d most like to avoid. The needs below represent consumers with different main priorities; the proportions are approximate.

Priority What to check Who is it for?
Cut down on daily chores Room- or zone-based scheduling; the type of station and any maintenance it still leaves you to do. If I want the floors cleaned while I get on with other things, I’d prioritise scheduled cleaning without having to empty a small dustbin every time. Around 33% of consumers would make reducing the number of chores their main priority.
Avoid getting stuck Threshold height and clearance beneath furniture; the model’s climbing ability. If I have thresholds, rugs in doorways or objects on the floor, my main concern is whether the robot can reach the rooms I want it to clean. Getting around the home would be the main concern for around 27% of consumers.
Mop hard floors without wetting rugs Compatible floor types; no-go zones and how the mop behaves on rugs. I might use a mop function to clean hard floors, but not if there’s a risk of wetting the rugs. Around 20% of consumers would put managing different floor surfaces first.
Deal with pet hair and maintenance Access to brushes and filters; care instructions and availability of consumables. When pet hair or long hair builds up, I want to be able to clean the brushes easily and find replacement parts. For around 20% of consumers, this ongoing maintenance would come first.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming a quoted power rating or a mop guarantees good results

According to tests by UFC-Que Choisir, robot vacuum performance varies depending on the floor and the dirt involved. Mopping results also differ from one model to another.

Look for tests covering the surfaces that matter most to you, and check the manual to see which floor types can be mopped. Pay particular attention to the instructions for wooden floors: UFC-Que Choisir advises against using a robot mop on solid wood.

  • Overlooking thresholds, rugs and floor preparation

A threshold or rug by a doorway could stop the robot from reaching a room. The climbing abilities quoted by Ecovacs or Rowenta for certain models apply only to those specific models, not every robot from the brand.

Measure your thresholds and the clearance beneath furniture, then compare them with the manual for the exact model. Also look out for cables and small objects that you’ll need to move before cleaning.

  • Assuming a station means you won’t need to do any maintenance

An auto-empty station means one less task, but you’ll still need to check the brushes, filters and sensors. A station that also takes care of the mop pads adds tasks involving water and cleaning.

Check the manual for the maintenance tasks involved and make sure consumables are easy to access before choosing a station.

Depending on the features, you may also need to manage dust bags, filters, mop pads or the clean- and dirty-water tanks.

  • Choosing smart features without checking the app

Scheduling, maps and no-go zones may depend on an app that’s compatible with the exact generation of the robot. The CNIL also points out that mobile apps can access a range of personal data.

Check which app you’ll need, whether it works with your phone, what updates are planned and which permissions it requests. Separately, check which spare parts are listed for the model you’re considering.

Brands to know

These brands offer different ranges of robot vacuums. Check the features and limitations mentioned for each specific model, independently of the products featured below.

Ecovacs

The French range includes robots with mapping and, depending on the model, a station and mopping function.

  • Ecovacs lists the DEEBOT T50 OMNI as featuring a station and a liftable mop.
  • The quoted lift height for this model doesn’t guarantee that all the edges of your rugs will stay dry. Check your rugs and thresholds.

Roborock

A robot vacuum brand to consider based on the features of the specific model you’re interested in.

  • If you have a home with several rooms, check whether the exact model has the scheduling, maps and no-go zones you need.
  • Before relying on these controls, check which app works with the model and the terms for its updates.

iRobot

Scheduling, mapping and maintenance tracking features vary across the Roomba range.

  • iRobot lists scheduling and mapping controls in its app for compatible models.
  • Check which app is right for the range you’re considering. For the models concerned, iRobot recommends cleaning the brushes twice a week in homes with pets.

Rowenta

Some X-Plorer models combine navigation, an auto-empty station and a mopping function.

  • Rowenta says the X-Plorer Series 75S+ can climb thresholds up to 18 mm. This figure applies to that specific model.
  • Measure your thresholds and check the specifications, as well as the repairability rating shown, on the product page for the model you’re considering.

Dreame

The brand offers several ranges of robot vacuum mops in France, with different features.

  • Dreame’s range includes the D20, with navigation and mopping features. Check that these are included on the version you choose.
  • Before buying, check which wear parts are available and the support terms for the specific model.

Robot vacuums with a station available on Joybuy

The models below are robot vacuums with a station, designed to help you schedule regular cleaning while reducing how often you need to empty the dustbin. You’ll still need to check the thresholds, rugs and maintenance requirements in your home.

Eureka E20 Plus robot vacuum with station

Eureka E20 Plus with station

Worth considering if you’d like to schedule cleaning and empty the robot less often. The product listing specifies a station, an anti-tangle function and a quoted runtime of 180 minutes. These specifications don’t guarantee how well it will clean your floors.

Check whether it can get over your thresholds and how the mop performs near rugs. The station’s dustbin and the brushes will still need maintenance.

ECOVACS DEEBOT X9 PRO OMNI robot vacuum mop with station

ECOVACS DEEBOT X9 PRO OMNI with station

Worth considering if you’re looking for a station that supports vacuuming and mop-pad maintenance. The product name lists a mopping function, an OZMO Roller and hot-air drying. Check which floor types are compatible before use.

Check the maximum threshold height, rug settings and app compatibility. You’ll still need to manage the clean and dirty water, brushes and filters.

Frequently asked questions

Can a robot vacuum replace my stick or cylinder vacuum?

Not necessarily. Keep a manual vacuum if certain areas need targeted cleaning or the robot can’t reach them. UFC-Que Choisir assesses performance separately on different floors, in crevices and around obstacles. Choose based on the surfaces and types of dirt in your home.

Can I use a robot mop in a room with rugs?

Yes, as long as you check how the exact model handles rugs and, if necessary, set no-mop zones. Ecovacs notes that in some setups, a rug’s edge can still get wet despite a protective mechanism. So a liftable mop doesn’t mean you can skip checking your rugs.

What should I check before choosing a robot controlled by an app?

Check that the app works with your phone and the model you’ve chosen, then look at the update terms and permissions it requests. The CNIL points out that mobile apps can access a range of personal data. Check these settings before using maps and remote controls.

Will spare parts be available for my robot?

Don’t assume they will be for a particular model. In France, the DGCCRF states that the legal requirement to make spare parts available applies only to certain categories of goods. Ask the seller what information is available for your model, and check with the manufacturer which brushes, filters and other parts are listed.
