What should you look for before buying?
Robot with navigation and mapping
Choose this if: you want to schedule cleaning by room or area and plan the route around your home’s layout.
Keep in mind: a map doesn’t guarantee that every cable or small object will be avoided. Clear the route and check tests of the specific model.
Robot with an auto-emptying dock
Choose this if: having to empty the robot’s bin frequently would be inconvenient while you’re out.
Keep in mind: compare the space needed for the dock and its dust container, which may or may not use a bag. You’ll still need to maintain the dock.
Robot that mops hard floors
Choose this if: you’d also like to schedule a damp clean on your hard floors.
Keep in mind: check how it handles carpets, how the mopping system works and what maintenance the dock still needs. Tests of specific models published by Les Numériques in 2024 found maintenance issues with some of them.
A handheld vacuum as a complement
Choose this if: you also need to clean stairs, furniture or areas a floor robot can’t reach.
Keep in mind: you’ll need to tackle these areas yourself. In its October 2026 comparison, Les Numériques points out that a floor robot can’t clean stairs, furniture or skirting boards.
If you want to keep your floors clean while you’re out, prioritise a clear route, compatibility with your flooring, dock maintenance and reliable scheduling. UFC-Que Choisir’s guide recommends checking app compatibility. Tests of specific models published by Les Numériques in 2024 show that mapping doesn’t always prevent a robot from getting stuck.
| What matters |
What to check |
Who is it for? |
| Navigation while you’re out |
Look out for cables, small objects and thresholds, and check the clearance needed around the dock. Consult tests of the specific model’s obstacle handling. |
If I sometimes leave objects or cables on the floor, I want to avoid having to free the robot or clean a room again. Around 36% of consumers prioritise uninterrupted navigation. |
| Compatibility with floors and carpets |
Compare results on the types of flooring in your home. If you have carpets, check how the robot handles them while mopping. |
With hard floors and carpets at home, I want to check vacuuming and mop handling separately before scheduling a mopping run. Around 29% of consumers prioritise compatibility with different floor coverings. |
| Dock maintenance |
Find out which tasks are genuinely automated, what type of dust container it uses and how much room the dock needs. |
If I’m often away, I want to empty the bin less often while bearing in mind the maintenance the dock will still need. Around 21% of consumers prioritise reducing how often they empty the bin. |
| App and replacement parts |
Check the phone and Wi-Fi requirements for the specific model, and find the exact part numbers for replacement components. |
To schedule cleaning and maintain my robot over time, I want to check that the app is compatible and identify the parts that fit my model. Around 14% of consumers prioritise ongoing usability. |

Eureka E20 Plus
Worth considering if you want to schedule cleaning and empty the bin less often. The product description mentions navigation with 3D obstacle avoidance, but this doesn’t guarantee the robot won’t get stuck in your home.

Frequently asked questions
Is mapping enough to run the robot while I’m out?
No. A map doesn’t guarantee that the robot will avoid every obstacle. Tests published by Les Numériques in 2024 reported that the Eureka J15 Pro Ultra sucked up cables and that the ECOVACS DEEBOT N20 Plus struggled with obstacles. Clear areas where small objects might be left on the floor.
How do I check the setup and scheduling requirements?
Check that you have enough space and a power supply for the dock, then make sure your phone and network are compatible with the specific model. iRobot support says the supported Wi-Fi bands vary between models; this information doesn’t automatically apply to other brands.
Does an auto-emptying dock mean there’s no maintenance?
No, it doesn’t eliminate every maintenance task. The bagless container on the DEEBOT N20 Plus tested by Les Numériques still needs emptying, and their test of the Dreame X40 Ultra Complete noted that its dock can get dirty.
What legal protections and information about parts apply in France?
For a purchase by an individual from a professional seller, the legal guarantee of conformity is mandatory for new, second-hand and refurbished goods, as the Ministry of the Economy explains in its information sheet dated 9 September 2026. The DGCCRF says that the requirement to make parts available applies only to certain categories of goods. If the manufacturer has given the seller a parts availability period, ask them what it is.
What should I check before using a connected robot at home?
Check which connected features you need, the app’s update arrangements and what information is collected and processed. The CNIL recommends finding out what the device can do before you buy; the features and data involved may vary by model.
