Who are these options suitable for?

People who are out during the day

If you want selected rooms vacuumed at set times, look for a robot with scheduling and check what it does at the end of a cleaning cycle. Rowenta and Dreame describe these settings on some models in their ranges; they aren’t available on every robot.

Homes with hard floors that also need regular mopping

A vacuum-mop can combine both tasks, as long as your flooring is suitable for wet cleaning. A station with washing or emptying functions can reduce some of the work, but you’ll still need to care for the tanks and mop pads.

Homes with multiple levels or tricky layouts

Check your stairs, thresholds, rugs and any items left on the floor before relying on unattended cleaning cycles. According to Les Numériques, robot vacuums can’t go up or down stairs, so a manual vacuum may still come in handy.

Which features should you prioritise?

Start with the task you want to hand over: vacuuming at set times, adding regular mopping or staying in control of every cleaning session. Then check whether the robot can move around your home and work with your connected devices.

Robot vacuum

Consider it: if you want to schedule floor cleaning, with room selection if the model offers it.

Bear in mind: you’ll still need another way to clean stairs and areas the robot can’t reach.

Robot vacuum-mop

Consider it: if you want to add regular wet cleaning on suitable floors.

Bear in mind: the water, mop pads and, depending on the model, the station mean extra maintenance.

Stick or cylinder vacuum

Consider it: for cleaning stairs, furniture or small messes whenever you need to.

Bear in mind: it won’t start a cleaning cycle by itself while you’re out.

What matters to you What to check Consumers who share this priority
Scheduling cleaning sessions Check whether you can schedule cleaning by room or zone and, if needed, whether the robot returns to its dock and resumes after recharging. If I’m out during the day, I want my chosen rooms vacuumed without having to start every cycle myself. This is the top priority for around 36 % of consumers concerned.
Mopping and maintenance Check separately which emptying, washing and drying functions the station offers, as well as the maintenance tasks involved. On suitable hard floors, I’d like to hand over wet cleaning too, while knowing that the robot’s components will still need looking after. Around 27 % of consumers concerned rank mopping as their top priority.
Getting around your home Measure your thresholds and the clearance under your furniture; check the model’s guidance on rugs and stairs. With thresholds, rugs or multiple floors, I need to know where the robot can actually go before scheduling cleaning while I’m out. This is the priority for around 19 % of consumers concerned.
Manual control and connectivity Check the app requirements and which functions are available without a connection, or choose a manual vacuum if you want to take direct control. For stairs or occasional cleaning, I sometimes prefer to do the job myself. If I choose a connected robot, I also want to understand how its app works. Around 18 % of consumers concerned prioritise this control.

What to avoid before you buy

  • Choosing based only on the advertised suction power

A figure in pascals won’t tell you whether the robot can follow the schedule, clean the rooms and navigate the route you need. Les Numériques also points out that the spec sheet alone isn’t enough to judge how well a robot cleans in real-world conditions.

As well as suction, look at the exact model’s navigation, room-by-room settings, rug handling and maintenance requirements.

  • Assuming every robot can cross the same thresholds

Rowenta states that the X-PLORER Serie 65 can cross thresholds up to 18 mm high. This figure doesn’t apply to other models and, by itself, won’t tell you how the robot will handle every threshold in your home.

Measure your doorways, compare them with the guidance for your chosen model and clear away anything that might interrupt a cleaning cycle.

  • Overlooking app setup requirements

The routines you want may depend on having a compatible phone, network or account. For Roomba Home-compatible series, for example, iRobot requires a valid email address to start the setup process.

Before buying, check the model’s mobile and Wi-Fi requirements, which functions work without a connection and what permissions the app requests.

  • Assuming an automatic station means no maintenance

A station can take care of some tasks, but the tanks, filters, brushes and mop pads still need regular maintenance suited to the model.

Check the manual to see what needs doing regularly, and find out which compatible consumables you’ll need before you choose.

Depending on the appliance, bags, filters, brushes and mop pads will also need replacing over time.

Brands to consider, model by model

Rowenta

The X-PLORER range gives you robot vacuums to compare with manual vacuums from the same brand.

  • For the X-PLORER Serie 65, Rowenta lists permanent mapping, Wi-Fi routines, automatic return to the dock and cycle resumption.
  • The advertised threshold clearance of up to 18 mm and repairability score of 9,1/10 apply to this model, not the whole range.

Roborock

The range includes robot vacuum-mops, with station features and rug handling varying by model.

  • Roborock says the QV 35A station handles tasks including emptying, washing and drying the mop pads.
  • The QV 35A product details state that it supports 2,4 GHz Wi-Fi only. Check the requirements for every other model separately.

Dreame

Depending on the model, the brand’s robots offer different combinations of mopping, mapping and station features.

  • Dreame lists room selection, no-go zones and scheduling among the features available on models compatible with its app.
  • 3D sensors, cameras and obstacle-avoidance features vary by model. Check the exact model if you often leave items on the floor.

iRobot

For connected Roomba series, check the setup requirements and available routines.

  • iRobot provides setup instructions for some series using the Roomba Home app.
  • For the relevant series, iRobot requires a compatible mobile device and a valid email address; setup on iPad isn’t supported. The brand also recommends maintaining the cliff sensors.

Frequently asked questions

Can a robot clean every floor while I’m out?

No, not unless you move it between floors: according to Les Numériques, robot vacuums can’t go up or down stairs. You’ll need to move it for each floor and maintain the cliff sensors as instructed by the manufacturer.

Do you always need an app and an account to use a robot?

It depends on the model and which features you want to use. For Roomba Home-compatible series, iRobot requires a valid email address and a compatible mobile device to start setup. Check the robot’s manual to see which features work without the app.

What data should you check before connecting a robot?

Check the app permissions and what information the chosen model uses for your account, mapping and diagnostics. The CNIL points out that the data collected by a connected device depends on its features, so read its privacy policy before enabling connected services.

Does the repairability score matter for a robot vacuum in France?

Yes. In France, the Ministry of the Economy states that displaying a repairability score is compulsory for vacuum cleaners, and ADEME confirms that this category includes robot vacuums. Compare the score shown for the exact model and check that replacement wear parts are available.

Does a washing station mean you don’t need to maintain the robot?

No. Depending on the model, it may empty the dust or wash and dry the mop pads automatically, but the tanks, filters, brushes and consumables still need attention. Check the manual for your chosen model to find out what maintenance is required.
