Which homes could benefit from a robot vacuum?

Homes with several rooms, rugs and obstacles

If thresholds, objects left on the floor or rugs make it harder for a robot to move around, check how well the model navigates your home before considering its scheduling features. UFC-Que Choisir assesses vacuuming on rugs, tiles and wooden floors separately: a good result on one type of flooring doesn’t guarantee the same result on another. You should also check the specific model’s obstacle-detection capabilities rather than relying on a brand’s general claims.

Homes where you’re often out and want to minimise upkeep

Scheduling and a docking station can make it easier to arrange regular cleaning. You’ll still need to empty or clean some parts, though, including the tanks, filters or mopping accessories, depending on the model.

Homes where you’re interested in damp cleaning hard floors

A robot mop may be worth considering for regular cleaning of flooring that can be safely dampened. However, UFC-Que Choisir reports mixed mopping results. Keep a manual cleaning option for dirt that needs a more thorough clean, and check the care instructions for your flooring.

What should you check before choosing?

If you want the robot to clean while you’re out, start by considering the route it will need to take. Then think about how much maintenance you’re willing to do and whether the robot is suitable for each type of flooring.

What to consider What to check Who this matters to
Independent navigation Measure thresholds and the space under your furniture; check the model’s mapping and obstacle-avoidance limitations. If rugs, cables or thresholds could interrupt a clean while I’m out, I want to know where the robot will actually be able to go. Around 42% of consumers are said to prioritise whether a robot is suitable for their home.
Robot and docking station maintenance Find out which tasks are automated, and which tanks, accessories and consumables will still need attention. I’m happy to set up a docking station if it mainly saves me from emptying the small dustbin after every clean, but I still need to be able to maintain it. Around 33% of consumers are said to prioritise reducing the amount of upkeep.
Vacuuming and mopping for different floor types Check the results for each type of flooring, as well as the care instructions from the flooring and robot manufacturers, before turning on the mopping function. With hard floors and rugs at home, I want to choose the right setting for each without getting an unsuitable floor wet. Around 25% of consumers are said to prioritise compatibility with their flooring.

These considerations may lead you to keep a conventional vacuum as your main appliance. A scheduled robot is less useful if the areas you need to clean are out of reach or require too much preparation before you leave.

Mistakes that can make it harder to use

  • Choosing based only on the advertised suction power

A single figure doesn’t tell you how well the robot will clean your rugs or reach into corners. UFC-Que Choisir tests rugs, tiles, wooden floors, edges and corners separately.

Compare the results for your flooring, then check how well the model can move around your rooms.

  • Assuming scheduled mopping replaces a thorough manual clean

UFC-Que Choisir finds that the mopping performance of many robot vacuums is disappointing, and its testing protocol advises against using them on wooden floors, particularly solid wood.

Only use the mopping function if both your flooring manufacturer’s instructions and the robot’s instructions allow it. Plan to clean stubborn dirt by hand.

Mop pads and, depending on the model, the docking station still need cleaning and may require consumables.

  • Assuming a docking station means no maintenance

Automatic emptying doesn’t necessarily clean the robot’s other parts. A multifunction docking station may also need its tanks filled and emptied.

Check exactly which tasks it handles, how much space it needs and how easy it is to access the parts that require maintenance.

  • Forgetting about the app and parts needed to use the robot

Scheduling or updates for a connected robot may depend on its app, a compatible smartphone and your network. For example, ECOVACS France says that updates for its DEEBOT models are made through the ECOVACS HOME app over Wi-Fi.

Check that the app is compatible and that brushes, filters and other consumables are available for the model you’re considering.

Brands to consider based on your priorities

Roborock

The range includes robots that map rooms, as well as models supplied with a docking station.

  • Roborock highlights zone-management features and, on some Qrevo Curv models, anti-tangle technology and obstacle recognition.
  • Check how the exact model handles objects, rugs and mopping. Advertised features don’t guarantee the same results in every home.

Dreame

The range includes robot vacuums with mopping functions, as well as X50 models that Dreame says offer mapping and obstacle-avoidance features.

  • Dreame France offers accessories including filters, batteries, brushes and cables.
  • Check that parts are compatible with the model you choose, and don’t assume that advertised features mean the robot will cross your thresholds or avoid every object.

Ecovacs

The DEEBOT range includes robot vacuums with mopping functions and, depending on the model, a docking station and connected features.

  • ECOVACS France’s support documentation explains how to update through the ECOVACS HOME app, with a Wi-Fi connection and the robot on its docking station.
  • If you’re relying on connected features, check the app and network requirements for your model.

iRobot

Depending on the series, Roomba robots offer scheduling, mapping or an automatic-emptying dock.

  • iRobot highlights scheduling features and maintenance tracking in its apps.
  • The app depends on the series. iRobot Assistance France says the classic iRobot Home app requires iOS 15 or later, or Android 9.0 or later. Some series sold after March 2025 use Roomba Home, so check which app the model needs before buying.

Rowenta

Rowenta robots may appeal to households that place a high priority on maintenance and access to spare parts.

  • As part of its repairability commitment, Rowenta France says spare parts are available for 15 years for almost all its products.
  • Check whether this applies to the model you’re considering and which consumables are covered. Rowenta also notes that a robot may not be able to cross a threshold that is too high.

Robot vacuums with docking stations on Joybuy

These models pair a robot vacuum with an emptying or maintenance station. If you want the robot to clean while you’re out, compare their advertised features with your thresholds and flooring, and consider how much maintenance you’re willing to do.

Frequently asked questions

Can a robot vacuum replace all manual cleaning?

No. It can help keep areas it can reach clean, but it can’t guarantee a thorough clean. UFC-Que Choisir assesses performance on rugs, tiles, wooden floors, edges and corners separately. Keep a manual cleaning option for hard-to-reach areas and occasional cleaning jobs.

Can I schedule a robot vacuum using an older smartphone?

It depends on the app required for the series you choose. iRobot Assistance France says the classic iRobot Home app requires iOS 15 or later, or Android 9.0 or later. Some Roomba series sold after March 2025 use Roomba Home instead. Check which app your model needs and whether it’s compatible with your phone.

What does a connected robot vacuum need for updates?

The process varies by brand and model. For its DEEBOT robots, ECOVACS France says you’ll need to connect to ECOVACS HOME, have a good Wi-Fi signal, place the robot on its docking station and ensure it has more than 50% charge. Check the instructions for your model if you want to be able to install updates at home.

What should I check about repairability and the guarantee in France?

Check the repairability index shown for the vacuum you’re considering, and whether parts are available for its specific model. According to the French Ministry of the Economy, you can claim under the legal guarantee of conformity for two years on new or second-hand goods from a professional seller. This covers whether the goods conform to the contract, so it shouldn’t be confused with simply changing your mind.
