What to look for
Start by deciding what matters most in your home: picking up pet hair, avoiding interruptions, mopping hard floors or reaching areas outside the robot’s route.
Que Choisir tests suction on different types of flooring, while iRobot Assistance France’s guidance highlights the need to maintain the brushes and wheels. Les Numériques points out that obstacle detection won’t deliver the same results in every home.
| What matters |
What to check before buying |
Who it matters most to |
| Picking up pet hair |
Test results on your flooring; access to the main brush, side brush, wheels and dust container. |
When hair builds up quickly, I want to spend less time cleaning the brushes without relying solely on anti-tangle claims. Around 33% of consumers prioritise regular pet-hair pick-up. |
| Obstacles and accidents |
Obstacle-avoidance tests using objects similar to those in your home; options for marking out areas to avoid. |
If I schedule a clean while I’m out, I want to be able to check the route and reduce the risk of blockages or accidents. Around 27% of consumers prioritise cleaning without mishaps. |
| Mopping hard floors |
Compatibility with your flooring; tests on similar marks and maintenance of the mopping components. |
When everyday marks are left on my hard floors, I want to know whether automated mopping is suitable for my surfaces. This is the top priority for around 20% of consumers. |
| Reaching difficult areas |
Whether you have stairs or surfaces above floor level; whether you need to deal with messes straight away. |
If I often need to clean stairs, furniture or a mess without delay, a handheld vacuum is still useful. Around 20% of consumers prioritise access to these areas. |

Frequently asked questions
Is mapping enough if toys or cables are left on the floor?
No. Mapping a room doesn’t guarantee that small objects will be avoided. The obstacle tests described by Les Numériques can’t guarantee the same results in every home. Check the route before heading out, and look for tests involving the objects you’re concerned about.
How should you maintain a robot used in a home with pets?
Follow your model’s manual for emptying the dust container and checking the brushes, wheels and sensors. iRobot Assistance France explains how to remove hair from a front wheel and gives recommended brush-maintenance intervals for households with pets for the relevant Roomba models.
Is a robot vacuum and mop suitable for pet messes?
Don’t assume it’s suitable for messes left by a pet. The mopping function is intended for floors and dirt that are compatible with the model, and results vary between systems. iRobot’s commercial promise published in France for the Roomba j7 and j7+ has specific conditions and excludes, among other things, non-solid waste, regurgitated matter and damage to floors.
Which repairability rating and guarantee should you check in France?
The DGCCRF says household robot vacuum cleaners are among the appliances that must display a repairability index. This index provides information about repairability, not how well a vacuum picks up pet hair. For an item bought from a professional retailer, the Ministry of the Economy distinguishes the statutory guarantee of conformity from a manufacturer’s commercial promise. Also check whether parts are available for the model you’re considering.
What extra costs and maintenance should you expect?
Check which parts and consumables are suitable for your model, as well as what’s involved in maintaining its station. Before buying online, check the retailer’s information about return costs if you change your mind.
