Who are these criteria for?

Homes with a pet that sheds regularly

To keep floors clean between manual cleans, check how easy it is to remove hair from the brush and empty the dustbin. How often you need to maintain the robot will depend in part on how much hair it picks up.

Homes with carpets and hard floors

Check how the robot performs on each floor type. If you’re choosing a robot mop, find out how it keeps carpets from getting wet. A model’s advertised features alone don’t prove how well it picks up long hair from your carpets.

Homes with litter trays, pet bowls or objects on the floor

Mapping and no-go zones can help plan the route if the model offers them. Even if a robot is advertised as able to avoid certain obstacles, you should still clear anything that could get in the way of cleaning.

What should you check before choosing?

Start with the flooring and objects in your home, then consider how much hands-on maintenance the robot will need.

Criteria What to check Depending on your needs
Brush and pet hair Check the type of brush, how easy it is to access for cleaning and whether a compatible replacement part is available. An advertised anti-tangle feature doesn’t eliminate the need for maintenance. Long hair can easily wrap around a brush, so I want to be able to remove it without a complicated process.
Carpets and mopping Check the stated limits for your carpets and thresholds. For a robot mop, find out how its wet cleaning components are lifted, removed or kept away from carpets. I have a mix of hard floors and carpets, so the wet clean mustn’t reach the flooring I want to keep dry.
Navigation Check which mapping, no-go zone and obstacle avoidance features are available on the exact model you’re considering. Make sure you know where the robot can go before scheduling a clean. With pet bowls, a litter tray or objects on the floor, I’d prefer to be able to mark out areas to avoid.
Emptying Decide whether you’re happy to empty the dustbin manually or whether an auto-empty dock would better suit your needs. Make room for it and check which dust bags are compatible. If the dustbin fills up quickly, I’d like to reduce how often I have to empty it by hand.
Battery life Compare the advertised battery life with the area to be cleaned, and check whether the model can resume cleaning after recharging. Take the rooms and areas you want to clean into account. If I have several rooms to clean, I want to know whether the robot can finish its planned route without my help.
Maintenance and repair Check which brushes, filters and mop pads are compatible, and what maintenance the instruction manual recommends. For the model sold in France, check the repairability index shown where applicable: it doesn’t measure how well the robot picks up pet hair. I’d rather know which parts need replacing and how much time I’ll need to spend cleaning the robot before using it regularly.

What should you look out for when buying?

  • Choosing based on Pa alone

An advertised suction power figure on its own doesn’t tell you how well a robot will pick up long hair from your floors and carpets. Product specification figures aren’t a substitute for results obtained using the same testing method.

If carpets covered in pet hair are your main challenge, look for tests that specify the flooring, type of hair and measurement method used.

  • Choosing a dock without checking the consumables

Auto-emptying means less hands-on emptying, but dust bags and other components still need to be maintained or replaced, depending on the model.

Before buying, check with the robot’s manufacturer which dust bags, filters, brushes and mop pads are compatible.

  • Expecting the robot to avoid every object on the floor

Obstacle recognition varies between models. For example, iRobot describes the Roomba j7+ as detecting pet waste; this claim doesn’t apply to every robot or every type of object.

Check the features of the model you’re considering, set no-go zones if available, and clear any potentially troublesome objects before leaving the robot to clean unattended.

  • Adding mopping without checking your carpets and available space

Carpet handling, threshold clearance and dock features vary from model to model. A multifunction dock also needs suitable space and maintenance.

Identify your carpets, measure your thresholds and the space available for the dock, then compare these measurements with the model’s product details and instruction manual.

Which brands and ranges should you consider?

These brand examples can help you identify features to compare. They aren’t a ranking of the brands’ robot vacuums or an indication of availability on Joybuy.

iRobot

Worth considering if you’re looking for rubber extractors or an AutoEmpty base on a compatible Roomba model.

  • iRobot says the Roomba i4+’s two multisurface rubber extractors are designed to pick up pet hair while reducing tangles. This is a claim made by the brand.
  • The brushes still need cleaning: iRobot recommends doing this twice a week in homes with pets. Also check that accessories are compatible with the series you’re considering.

Roborock

Worth considering if carpets and objects on the floor make flooring management and navigation important to you, depending on the model.

  • Roborock advertises anti-tangle systems and, on some Qrevo models, obstacle recognition and carpet protection features.
  • These features vary by model and don’t demonstrate comparable performance when picking up long hair. Check which accessories are compatible, too.

Dreame

Worth considering if you want to combine vacuuming and mopping with automated tasks handled by a dock, on a model that offers these features.

  • For the DreameBot L10s Ultra, Dreame advertises features including dustbin emptying, plus mop pad cleaning and drying by the dock.
  • These features don’t tell you how well this model picks up long hair from your carpets. The dock and mopping components still need maintenance.

Robot vacuums available on Joybuy

These models combine a mopping function with features advertised to help manage pet hair; several also come with an auto-empty dock. Before choosing one for your home, compare how it handles carpets, its navigation features and the maintenance it requires.

Frequently asked questions

Does an auto-empty dock eliminate maintenance in a home with pets?

No. It can empty the dustbin automatically, and some docks also take care of the mop pads, but brushes, filters and other components still need maintenance as set out in the instruction manual. For its main Roomba brushes, iRobot recommends cleaning them twice a week in homes with pets.

How can you check a robot vacuum’s consumables?

Start with the exact model number, then check with the manufacturer which dust bags, filters, brushes and mop pads you’ll need and whether they’re compatible. Also check their availability before choosing a dock or a model with a mopping function.

Is a robot mop suitable for a home with carpets?

It can be, as long as its mopping features are suitable for your carpets. Some Roborock models are advertised as lifting or detaching their mopping components, but check this feature on the exact model and check the stated limits for your carpet pile height.

Does the repairability index tell you how well a robot picks up pet hair?

No. ADEME Infos lists vacuum cleaners among the product categories that must display a repairability index in France. Check the information shown for the model being sold to help you assess its repairability, but don’t confuse this with a measure of how well it cleans carpets or picks up pet hair.
