What to look for
Start with your floors and how easily the robot can move around, then decide which programmable features and maintenance tasks you’re happy to manage.
| Feature |
What to check |
Who it’s for |
| Navigation and zones |
Editable map, room-by-room scheduling and keep-out zones; multi-floor mapping if needed. |
If different rooms need different cleaning schedules, I want to target specific areas without restarting a clean of the whole home. Around 31% of consumers prioritise this level of control over where the robot goes. |
| Emptying and maintenance |
Type of dock, space required, and the reference numbers for replacement bags, filters and brushes. |
If emptying the bin frequently would put me off using the robot regularly, I’d rather do it less often, while still being happy to maintain the dock. This is a priority for around 25% of consumers. |
| Floors, rugs and access |
Results on your flooring, how it handles rugs and edges, clearance under furniture and the conditions for mopping. |
If I have rugs and hard floors, I need to choose based on the surfaces in my home, rather than relying on a single advertised figure. Around 25% of consumers put this ability to adapt to their home at the top of their list. |
| Compatibility and ongoing use |
App and network requirements for the exact model, how updates work and whether spare parts are available. |
To keep using the scheduling features I’m interested in, I want to know which app works with the robot and how to get its accessories. Around 19% of consumers put continued usability first. |

ECOVACS Deebot X11 Pro Omni robot vacuum and mop
Compare this model with your home if you want to schedule cleaning by area and use a dock. The product name lists OZMO Roller 2.0 roller mopping and 19,500 Pa suction. The advertised maximum threshold clearance of 4 cm doesn’t mean it’s guaranteed to get over a threshold in one go. Measure your thresholds and check the conditions specified for this model. You’ll also need to allow space for the dock and factor in the work involved in handling its tanks.

Frequently asked questions
Can a robot mop replace manual mopping?
No, you shouldn’t buy one on that assumption. UFC-Que Choisir found mixed results for mopping. It’s best suited to light maintenance on compatible hard floors, while you’ll still need a manual option for stubborn dirt. The organisation advises against using it on solid wood floors.
Do you need an app and Wi-Fi to start a cleaning run?
Not necessarily: iRobot says its robots can clean without an app or Wi-Fi, but the available features depend on the model. If you want to use maps and schedules, check the app and network requirements for the model you’re considering. The Roborock QV 35A, for example, requires 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.
How can you check for updates for a connected robot?
Check the support information for the exact model and the app it uses. iRobot says its Wi-Fi robots can receive updates when connected to the network and placed on their Home Base. So also check that there’s Wi-Fi coverage where you plan to put the dock.
What still needs maintaining when you have an auto-empty dock?
The dock means you need to empty the robot’s bin less often, but it doesn’t eliminate maintenance. Check which bags, filters and brushes are compatible. If the model mops floors, you’ll also need to look after its mopping pads and the dock’s tanks.
