What should you check before buying?
If you plan to schedule your robot to clean while you’re away, first check that it can reach the rooms you want cleaned. Then look at how well it performs on your floors, what maintenance you’ll still need to do and, if you’re interested, how the mopping function works.
| What matters |
What to check |
Who this may matter to |
| Getting around your home |
Measure door thresholds and the clearance beneath furniture, then compare them with the stated capabilities of the exact model. Also identify any cables and items that need to be moved before a cleaning cycle. |
If my rooms are separated by thresholds or cluttered, I want to avoid areas being left out of reach while I’m away. Around 36% of consumers would rank this compatibility with their home’s layout as their top priority. |
| Performance on your floors |
Look for test results on the surfaces you have most of, including rugs, as well as along edges and in corners. UFC-Que Choisir assesses these areas separately. |
If I have rugs or dust along the walls, I’m mainly looking for cleaning performance that suits my surfaces. Around 29% of consumers would make this their top priority. |
| Maintenance between cleaning cycles |
Check how easy it is to access the dustbin, brushes and filters. If the robot comes with a docking station, check how much space it needs and what tasks you’ll still have to do yourself. |
If pet hair builds up quickly, I want to schedule cleaning without having to intervene too often between cycles. Around 21% of consumers would make maintenance their top priority. |
| Mopping and the app |
Check that the robot is suitable for your floors and can handle rugs while mopping. For connected features, check that your phone is compatible and that the Wi-Fi signal reaches the base. |
On hard floors, I may want light mopping or the option to schedule cleaning in the app, while accepting that I’ll still need to maintain the mop. Around 14% of consumers would put this need first. |

These models combine vacuuming with a mopping function. If you plan to schedule cleaning while you’re away, compare their features with your floors and consider what maintenance you’re still happy to do yourself. A docking station alone doesn’t prove how well the robot will clean.

Frequently asked questions
Can a robot vacuum cleaner replace my regular vacuum while I’m away?
No. It’s best to think of it as a way to help with regular cleaning. UFC-Que Choisir reports that results vary depending on the type of floor; corners, tricky rugs and localised messes may still need to be cleaned by hand.
How can I tell if a robot will cross my thresholds and rugs?
Measure them, then check the stated capability of the exact model and the conditions for using it. As examples for specific devices, iRobot support states that the Roomba i1 to i4 models mentioned can cross thresholds up to 1,6 cm, while an Electrolux support response gives a figure of up to 2,2 cm. These measurements don’t apply to all robot vacuums.
Can I schedule the first clean while I’m away?
It’s better to supervise the robot for several cleaning cycles before leaving it to run on its own. Clear away objects and cables, fold back any tassels that could get in its way and check that it can find its way back to the base. For connected features, also check the Wi-Fi signal where the base is located.
Is a robot mop enough for hard floors?
It can help with light cleaning, but it won’t necessarily remove stains or replace your mop every time. UFC-Que Choisir reports disappointing mopping results for the majority of the models tested. Check test results for your type of floor and how the robot avoids rugs while mopping.
