Which households could benefit from a robot vacuum?

Households looking to leave more time between full cleans

If your floors are generally clear, regular runs can take care of some of the cleaning between manual sessions. You’ll still need to prepare the route, though: iRobot recommends removing objects and excessive clutter before starting a cycle.

Households dealing with pet hair or human hair

Depending on its features, an auto-emptying dock can reduce how often you need to handle the dust bin. You’ll still need to check the brushes, wheels, sensors and filters, as iRobot’s care instructions make clear.

Households with thresholds, rugs or low furniture

The priority is to check where the robot can actually go. ECOVACS notes that a threshold’s height, shape and approach angle affect whether the robot can cross it. You should also compare the robot’s height with the clearance under your furniture.

What should you check before choosing one?

Start by identifying the rooms the robot could clean and the areas you’d still need to tackle by hand. Then compare the dock and mopping features with the maintenance tasks they genuinely add or take away.

Factor What to check Who is it for?
Getting around your home Measure your thresholds and check their shape; compare them with the model’s specifications. Also check rugs, obstacles and the clearance under furniture. If thresholds divide my rooms, I want to know which ones the robot can reach without me having to move it. Getting around the home would be the top priority for around 31% of consumers.
Dock and ongoing maintenance Check whether the model’s dock handles charging, emptying and maintenance of the mopping components. Make sure there’s an accessible space for it near a power socket. With frequent runs and pet hair to pick up, I’d rather empty the bin less often, without forgetting to clean the brushes. Around 31% of consumers would put maintenance tasks first.
Mopping hard floors Check the instructions for surfaces that are sensitive to water and how the robot handles rugs, then look at the water tanks and mop components that need maintaining. I’d like to add routine mopping to my hard floors, as long as I can manage the water and mop components. This would be the top priority for around 23% of consumers.
Additional manual cleaning Make a list of stairs, upholstery, corners and inaccessible areas that will still need to be cleaned by hand. For stairs and targeted cleaning, I need to keep a vacuum I can use directly. Keeping an upright vacuum would be the top priority for around 15% of consumers.

What buying pitfalls should you avoid?

  • Assuming the robot will cross every threshold

The stated height alone doesn’t tell you everything about whether a robot can get through: ECOVACS says the shape of the threshold and the approach angle matter too. If a robot gets stuck between two rooms, it won’t be able to clean them regularly without your help.

Measure each threshold and check the crossing limit for the exact model. Make sure you have another way to clean any rooms the robot can’t reach.

  • Confusing an automated dock with no maintenance

iRobot and Dyson’s care instructions still call for checks and cleaning of the brushes, wheels, sensors, contacts or filters, even when you use a dock.

Compare the dock’s features with the list of tasks you’ll still need to do for the model you’re considering.

Depending on the set-up, you may also need to replace bags or filters and maintain the tanks or mopping components.

  • Starting a mopping run without checking your rugs and floors

A mopping function doesn’t mean every route is suitable for wet cleaning. iRobot’s instructions include preparing rugs, while UFC-Que Choisir distinguishes between results on different types of flooring.

Check the instructions for each surface and see whether the model can avoid rugs or exclude certain areas from mopping.

  • Choosing the dock before deciding where it will go

The robot needs clear access to its dock. The Dyson Spot+Scrub Ai manual, for example, says to place it against a wall, on a flat surface and near a power socket. Installation requirements vary by model.

Measure the space you have in mind and compare it with the instructions for the dock you’re planning to buy.

Brands to know when comparing models

ECOVACS

The DEEBOT range featured by ECOVACS France includes various robot configurations, including models with a dock or a mopping function.

  • You can compare navigation, mopping and dock features by model number.
  • Don’t assume that every DEEBOT has the threshold-crossing ability or dock features of a particular model. ECOVACS recommends taking your actual thresholds into account.

iRobot

The Roomba range includes robot vacuums and Combo models. According to iRobot France, some models come with automated docks.

  • You can compare models by whether they offer vacuuming only, mopping or additional dock features.
  • iRobot recommends preparing the floor before each run, and components such as brushes and sensors still need maintenance.

Dyson

The French manual for the Dyson Spot+Scrub Ai describes a robot mop with a dock that carries out several tasks automatically.

  • The documentation explains this model’s dock features and the maintenance tasks to expect.
  • It needs a suitable spot for installation, and you’ll still need to maintain the brushes, filter, sensors and tanks.

Frequently asked questions

Can a robot vacuum replace my upright vacuum?

Not necessarily. A robot designed for everyday cleaning won’t tackle stairs, upholstery or every hard-to-reach area. To work out what you can leave to a robot, consider your different floors and awkward spots separately. UFC-Que Choisir tests robots on rugs, tiles, parquet, edges and corners, among other areas.

What should I do before letting a robot move around?

Remove small objects and excessive clutter from its route, as iRobot recommends. Also check for rug fringes and measure your thresholds: according to ECOVACS, their shape and the approach angle can affect whether the robot gets through.

Will an auto-emptying or mopping dock eliminate all maintenance?

No. Depending on the model, it automates some tasks, but the wheels, brushes, sensors, contacts and filters still need regular attention. Check the care instructions for the exact model you’re considering rather than relying on the dock’s name alone.

Does the repairability rating apply to vacuum cleaners?

Yes. According to the French Ministry for Ecological Transition, vacuum cleaners are among the product categories covered in France. When comparing models, check the rating for the one you’re considering and find out how easy it is to access spare parts. The rating doesn’t guarantee how long the appliance will last.
